The Redstone Arsenal Marine mascot, Cledus K-Bar, promoted to corporal two years ago, passed away March 6. The 11 year-old had been mascot since 2004. The perfect Marine, Cledus had an everyday camouflage leash, plus a more formal blue one for special occassions. Oh, and of course he had dog tags.

Hello and thank you for your kind words. Cpl Cledus K-Bar passed on 8 March by the way - I will never forget that cold damp Saturday and it snowed. I was the caretaker for Cledus and so I am very proud of him. I desperately miss him as well. He was not only a perfect Marine but he was the best companion as well. Here's a link to his Dogster page which also shows a few of his photos during "liberty".

Also, I have been working on military honors for Cledus and I hate to be disloyal to the Corps but I will have to say so far I am getting the cold shoulder.

Here's a few words from some fellow Marines who also served with Cpl Cledus : I just have to say a little something. Bear with me as most of you know I can
get long winded at times......err!

While I never paid too much attention to Cpl Cledus, he was a fine Devil Dog.
Not a day went by that Cledus wasn't at his post. He was always eager to run
outside and use the can in the flower beds the Marines had just spend all
month beautifying. Even after he handled his business he would always pause
just to look around as if he was making sure the area was "ALL SECURE".

Not once did Cledus ever attack a fellow Marine, maybe he didn't in hopes of
getting a snack; we all know how he loved snacking. Cledus would stand watch
with the DNCO all night long and never complain. Always a professional as when
guests came aboard he would greet them with a sniff and look them in the eye
as to say, "I'll be watching you".

Cledus was admire by most and envied by some. He was the type of Devil Dog
that was always available and you could always count on Cledus being there.
He spent many long days and nights doing what Devil Dogs do; Serving and
Protecting.

Cpl Cledus will be missed and I for one, who had very little hands on contact
with Cledus was proud to serve by his side. He taught me remain calm under
pressure and that discipline is the key to success. Cpl Cledus you are a
success and provided many of the tools necessary to ensure that your fellow
Devil Dogs will continue to be successful for the next 200 years.

Rest in peace Devil Dog, you've served your time in hell!

Semper Fi,

I was notified of the death of Cpl Cledus K-Bar by Mrs. Nicole Gaines and also informed of a possible interview by you regarding the service of Cpl Cledus.
Here are a few words I would like to share about Corporal (Cpl) Cledus:
First and foremost, Cledus was the first Mascot I was ever genuinely associated with throughout my 29 years of military service. When approached by the Marine Corps Detachment Staff regarding a Mascot, I was a very reluctant to agree, because this was a demanding task which required the entire Staff to play a part in the care taken of this Mascot. I agreed with some reservations, but shortly afterwards Private Cledus joined the Marine Corps Detachment and proved his worth within the Marine Corps Detachment and the Redstone Military Community. This proud prancing Mascot went on to gain the respect of the Brigade Commander (Colonel Joyce Napier). The Brigade Commander always invited Cledus as a special guest when Soldiers, Marines, and Civilians engaged in organizational events which potentially boosted the overall command morale.
I shared a special relationship with Cledus while serving as the Commanding Officer of the Marine Corps Detachment, Cledus often stood outside my office passage way awaiting approval to enter the office space. Displaying quality discipline as a good Marine and recognizable respect for authority. This was often rewarded by various doggy treats and a kind word of good job Cledus. In addition, Cledus achieved the rank of Corporal for representing the best of the Marine Corps Mascots within the Marine Corps Detachment Redstone, Arsenal.
May our Mascot warrior rest in peace; he was a great asset to the Marine Corps Detachment and a true motivator to the Marines, Soldiers and Civilians of the Redstone Arsenal Team. Cpl Cledus will be surly missed by the thousands of Ammunition Students who stood their post along side him.
Respectfully,
T.J. Johnson

Thank you all again for your posts and the beautiful grave marker.

Cledus has recieved nothing at all yet from the military as far as a service. I am still trying to get something done but this is the issue that I am getting the run around about. Cledus passed almost 2 months ago. My husband and I had him cremated because no one would agree to a service quick enough. We also ordered a marble urn with an Eagle Globe and Anchor. He waits patiently, sitting on our dresser surrounded by cards from friends, his only 3 toys, and a lapel pin with our National colors and a Marine Corps flag. He's Always Faithful.
You guys are great for listening and responding. I am pretty sure the Marine Corps will do something to honor Cledus. In their defense they are always busy staying on top of one mission after another. It takes a long time for everything that's the least bit out of the ordinary. Of course I think Cledus is number one priority but I know they are just overwhelmed with other daily stuff. So we will just wait and I will keep everyone posted.
