And you know this to be fact? Were you standing in that line also?

What's the difference between a poor black person standing in line for help and a rich wall street banker standing in line for help?
Answer, the Wall Street banker gets what he asked for.

You cannot have e a job fair when there are no jobs. Go read up on the statistics and first hand accounts of the depression. I still do not think people who were born after 1950 get it! THERE WERE NO JOBS. These people are not begging. They are starving! And, yes, most of these people would have been at the job fair! There is no substitute for stupidity!

I don't think renicillo was talking about the depression era pic, but rather the pic from ronnie's link.

ConfusedYou cannot differenciate between the two Picures. Both groups are in need. I can't identify with the housing group because I've never been there. The Depression Group, you bet. Cornbread and syrup were a staple. My dad plowed an old mule at night by the light of a carbide miner's cap for light just to try to scratch out a garden. Pray you do not ever see that again. He built a house for a man and was paid $125.00 and an old cow. Wake up folks and educate yourselves on past history. It is coming back in a flash if we don't change our attitudes and realize what is going on in our country. MHO Mad

My mother and father both lived through the depression, and WW2, and my grandparents lived through WW1 and the depression.
All of them feared the return of another depression much more than anything else, so I know it must have been hell.
As for the safety net , or entitlement programs I have this comment to offer:

Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Millionaires, and an occasional politician or business man from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid.

I point out again THEY ARE STUPID who wish do do away with SS , Unemployment ins, and labor laws. If you believe they should be eleminated, you are stupid.

I don;t think they should be done away with BUT social security should be privatized, labor laws should be made fair enough that companies would not be so quick to outsource their jobs overseas so that they can remain in business and competitive, and some of the rules for unemployment insurance should be taken off business and part of the insurance should be taxed direct to the employee (when they are working) in relation to their own unemployment experience rating instead of putting the entire burden on business.
I disagree, especially on privatizing Social Security. I can see no reason to turn our money over to greedy companies who would take away from us. Just look what would have happened if SS were privatized in the last 10 years. A lot of retired people would be back in the job market trying to get jobs along with millions of other people.
Not good . Pay back the money "borrowed" from ss, raise the retirement age a year or 2, and lift the cap on when you stop paying payroll taxes.

Very much agreed, I have run into people that have tried to get me to let them buy my groceries with their foodstamp card in return for 75 cents on the dollar, these where of course people that I knew were on drugs and would use the cash for that purpose instead of feeding their kids.
Add to what mentalfloss said in his earlier post about drug testing, I also think that people receiving government assistance should be banned from buying tobacco and alcohol. Additionally I think all government subsidized housing should be smoke free zones and dry.
For the ones who collect unemployment (I do not consider unemployment benefits government assistance, that is insurance paid for by employers)I think they should have an "experience rating" just like employers have. If employees had to pay part of their unemployment tax (while working)and the percentage of their income that they had to pay was dependent on how long and how much they had received in past benefits then the problem of SOME people wanting to lay around and collect instead of getting back to whatever job they can get, on another note I also think that a percentage of unemployment benefits should still be able to be collected if the person receiving benefits finds another job that does not pay somewhere near their old salary.
Makes me wonder, seems the very same people who are against bigger government are the ones wanting to expand the "welfare drug testing police" department. How many here actually think an entire new government program to handle this is a good idea?
Easy thing to be "for", but as a practical matter an impossibility to implement.

Big Grin
Makes more sense than anything I've heard. Ain't gonna happen though. Too much money coming in the "sheep" that vote.
