since we moved here 27 years ago, dales has always been talked about as one of the finest restaurants in this area. the first time we went there i was astounded to find the butter and sour cream being delivered to our table by a waiter who spooned a big "plop" onto our plate from a bowl under his arm. also, it was so dark in there we could not see-maybe there is a reason for that. for business purposes i have attended dinners there in the group room. last week i had the worst meal i have ever had. how in the world would a "fine" restaurant serve a salad with nothing in it? lettuce and a few shreds of carrot and a couple of purple cabbage parts. the baked potato was at least a few days old having been reheated until someone came along to be the poor recipient. and the steak, oh my. do they ever clean the grill? it was stone cold and tasted horrible. and worse than anything, the whole restaurant was pitch dark, enough so that you can't see where to walk. and it had apparently had just been cleaned because of the lingering aroma of pinesol. sorry for the bad report but please, this can't be someone's idea of a fine restaurant.

You see, we are so backward that if someone tells us it is fine then we have no choice but to believe it. I don't like the idea of it being as dark in there as it is, but that is how it has always been and the do keep a pretty good business going on. The only time I go is when the SHBA has their meetings on the second Tuesday of each month, get a fairly good meal for $8, guests cost more.
The marketplace will always dictate what is "acceptable", relative to business. When someone offers a good alternative to "too-dark ambiance" , "outdated decor", "spotty service", and (sometimes) less than a very good steak, you won't have to worry about eating there anymore. (I, personally, don't like the amount of salt in their french onion soup.) People who frequently travel outside the Shoals are probably not their customers anyway.
Our last meal at Dales was the worst we have obtained at Dales since going. We have not been back since and was worried why things have seemingly changed so much? One would think as the economy worsens and competition gets tighter that one would want to be better. For our part we go to Georges when it comes to a choice between the two.
