I wanted to let everyone know of a game that kids are Sheffield Jr. High are playing. Some of you may remember a game years ago where kids would take an eraser and rub it another's hand. At this school kids are actually competing to see you can rub the eraser against their hand or other part of the body for the longest about of time.

My son's friend spent the night with him a couple of weeks ago and they timed how long my child could rub the eraser on his hand (it was 7 1/2 minutes). That eraser burn became infected and he is on antibiotics.

His hand is still infected but is getting better.Although it had serious consequences, my son's statement to me is, "I still hold the highest record).
I will be addressing this issue with the school on Monday so they know what's going on, I had not done so earlier because my son went on a trip with his Dad and I did not know it was still oozing until he got back.

Please talk to your loved ones about this game, it can lead to very serious infections.
I've recently obtained a new, more positive outlook on life. Things are not always as they seem nor as bad as we think they are. Thank you Lord for opening my eyes!

Your son said he still holds the highest record? Maybe you should address him instead of the School. My bet is they didn't do it at School.

Sounds like your son didn't learn anything.
If this was done at home, how would the school be responsible?

BTW, I've never heard of this "game".
First of all, my son nor his friend stole anything, this is done with a regular eraser. Secondly, he learned this game FROM other kids at school, and lastly I did not say the school is responsible, just that they need to be aware so they can be watchful of kids doing this and I posted it on this forum so it could be passed on before it gets any further.

My son has learned his lesson, he stated he still holds the highest record which causes me to be concern that other kids are still doing this.

Perhaps I am overreacting, but I really resent the implication that this is just a problem with my child, so let me make this clear..OTHER KIDS ARE PLAYING THIS GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just what do you expect the School to do about it? I'm sure the teachers aren't letting them do it in class, unless they sneak and do it. The Teachers cant discipline anymore, so I would say its up to you to tell you son not to come home with another mark on him from this game. But then again he did it away from School. It was at your home. Boys will be boys.

I understood what you were saying immediately, wonka, and I don't think you're overreacting at all. If the infection required antibiotics and the game was learned at school, the school should know about it. At the least, they can send a broad email to parents giving them a heads up.

I'd want to know so that I could talk to my son about the dangers of doing it. Boys are indeed boys and don't always think with their brains when they're trying to impress friends.

Had Enough, the mere statement you made about schools's inability to discipline demonstrates just how much you know about whats going on in the schools. They still use corporal punishment in most Alabama schools and I know for a fact that teachers and administarators at SCS do paddle students.

Indeed they do. It's illegal here, thank heavens.

Yes, and they keep a file of us "difficult" parents who don't give it.

I didn't mention anything being stolen....don't know where that came from. Wink
I agree the school needs to be made aware so it can be addressed at school & thru a letter to parents. I guess I misunderstood your intent.

Hopefully, he learned a lesson & won't do it again. You didn't mention that so I assumed he was so proud of his record that he might do it again.

I did not mean to imply it was only your child.
I'm sorry if I offended you, it wasn't my intention.
when I was a kid erasers hadn't been invented yet. We burned our initials into our arms with a hot rock. At least he ain't wearin lace panties and lipstick, and antibiotics are readily available. Tell him if he really wants to have some fun yank out a tooth, or dare him to nail his foot to the floor.

lighten up people.

Has this changed recently? It wasnt that long ago that parents had to have a written note on file preventing the school from paddling students. If the parent had not proactively stated no paddling in writting, it was allowed.....
He goes to Brooks Elem. I do understand the dangers and we had a long discussion about it and that he better not do it again. He didn't say how long it took and I didn't think to ask him. It was obvious it was too long. We're very lucky he didn't get an infection from this. His grandmother called the school mad about the incident and they told her they were aware of it.

Again, that was at the end of last year, and he said that nobody was doing it this new school year.
I remember this from when I was in school too. I was in elementary in the 70's. I never did it because I knew that if I were to do something to mark my skin like that and injure myself, my mama first then my daddy would whoop my a55.

Well that and I am a girl. We are just smarter than boys. Makes no sense to hurt ourselves for fun!! That's crazy boy stuff.
Dangerous game??? I think not. Kids have been doing this for decades. I remember doing one on top of my hand, as some other boys did on theirs. The sore/scab it leaves is no worse than having a minor bicycle wreck, or a cut from playing some sport. Put away your hand sanitizer for a little while and allow little johnnie go out and play. lol
