hated seeing news that Debbie has resigned. i was lucky to know Debbie for a long time and to work with her on some projects. She is a wonderful person, caring , trustworthy.  Florence you have made a mistake. All those fishing tournaments could have gone anywhere.

Advice  do not lose Allison and Georgia.   Most diffently do not hire one of the boards or some politicians family member.

Debbie thank you for all you do,, God Bless

Well, Nelson and the others wanted her to go; they run her off by making the working environment so hostile, that no human being can work; this is a known tactic by business', and these three men are businessmen are very aware of how to get rid of an employee. I guess we will see now who they are really want to put in the job; I'm sure it is a man, one of their good ole boy friends, and won't be surprised at the hefty salary he will be offered. Nelson and the other business men knew what they were doing. You can kiss tourism for North Alabama bye. The political cronies have took over.

Honestly didn't know Florence/Lauderdale county had a music industry, and the fishing in this, North Alabama area, has been a big draw for way longer than 20 years. The music industry in Sheffield and Muscle Shoals has been a big deal for a lot longer than 20 years too. I don't think either of those needed to be 'put on the map'. Let volunteers run the tourism program. Makes more sense than paying someone. Now, I don't know anyone involved, just commenting on the story.

Wilson has served as director for the last 20 years and has played a significant role in putting Florence and the Shoals region on the map in both the fishing world and the music industry, among others.

Odds are that it won't be a man.  Fortunately, if I'm correct about who has been set up for this, she is quite competent.  But you are correct about the political cronyism; however, it is nothing new here.

Yep--Debbie got a promotion, but it is a regional management job, not the top state tourism job. Sure makes the crusty old guys who threatened to fire her look silly.

"FLORENCE —The State Department of Tourism has named Florence-Lauderdale Tourism Director Debbie Wilson as North Alabama regional director for tourism and manager of the state’s welcome center program."

"Tourism" brings in a ton of money in our area.  You don't leave that job up to volunteers.  It is the "volunteer" board that has screwed things up.  Hopefully they can get their act together.

The state has gained a great asset.

Sorry to disagree but there is nothing that says retired folks that volunteer can't do as well or better than someone being paid, or that a person that volunteers their time isn't as qualified as a paid person. I've seen places run just fine by volunteers, both retired and others just interested in helping their communities. But anyway, it's Florence's issue and if they want to spend the money they can have at it. It was just a suggestion.
