If/when Acadamy Sports comes to town people feel that it will be tough on ****'s Sporting Goods.  It might but either way the owner's will be happy because ****S and Acadamy Sports actually are owned by the same folks or that's what I've been told.

Actually that's not a bad idea as whether a person goes to ****S or Academy the same owners get the business.

While Sweetwater / Bass Pro Shops ****** around in Lauderdale and Madison / Decatur, playing turf games, Academy established themselves in Decatur off Beltline and Spring Ave.  So far, their only competition, long time Wileys, comes and goes.

And when Gander Mountain moved in right down the street from Larrys in Huntsville, it brought Larry's more gun business because of his offerings and prices.

Cabelas built in Madison.  Larry's opened up right with them along with another gun store in Madison I've forgotten the name.  Not only that, right across from Cabela's Drive in Madison, D*I*c*k*s is opening/open.  Combined with Larry's Huntsville, Gander Mountain will be a K-Mart soon.

Winners:  Larry's 2 locally owned stores and Academy's D*I*c*k*s

PS, the head honchos of Ruger visited Larry's April 9th.  Cabelas, Academy, nor Gander Mountain are going to beat their prices.

In the Shoals, you have Gander Mountain and Shoals Outdoor.  Shoals Outdoor gets more of my business.

I am in the sports industry, and Academy and Dic*s are NOT owned by the same people. Academy is based in TX and the other in PA.

Academy Sports + Outdoors and Di*ck's Sporting Goods have expressed interest in buying the assets of rival U.S. retailer Sports Authority that are on sale in a bankruptcy auction, according to people familiar with the matter.

A while back, Cabelas bought out GMs mail order business.  GM had to sue to get rights to sell on-line.  What's your take on the possible BPS buyout of Cabelas?

Let me clarify my preceding post.  The quote/link I gave seems to imply that I'm saying Academy & Di*cks are one in the same.  I don't mean it that way.  Just that both of them are after SA.  Daddy Joe is in a much better position to know than we are.

Aren't they way higher than other stores where you can get the same things?

Based on my experience, when GM first came to Huntsville and later Florence, they were way higher than others . . . others being like the aforementioned Larry's and Academy.  I don't really know how their prices compare now as I don't shop there anymore.  The reason why has as much to do with convenience as it does prices.

Actually in the Shoals area a great store to check out is Lock & Load.  It's a small store and located on Veterans' Drive in a little strip of stores just down from the road that leads to the Mariott and the Splash Pad Park.  Might check them out from time to time but no where near the selection that many other's have but quality, and some good used gun values.

I too have found Gander Mountain to be quite higher than most but every once in a while a blind hog will find an acorn and Gander Mountain will have a good sale price on something.  One instance was their last sale where they had a 40 S&W Walther PPS for around $350.  No one else could touch that price.  For some reason it was only the .40 S&W and not the .9mm but still no one could get within $30 or more dollars of their sale price.  So every once in a while you can find something at a decent price but overall they have so little business and the reputation of always having such high prices that I too fear that they will go the way of the Florence K-Mart.
