My family and I elected to give the Dixie Dinner on the Old Savannah Highway a try this evening. Using my scale of 1-5 with 1 being the worst and 5 being the best, here is my opinion.

The service was horrible. I would give the wait staff a 1 and struggle to do that, only because they were breathing. I knew they were breathing, because they were accepting calls on their person cell phone while ignoring the patrons. This was absolutely the worse service that I have had at any restaurant in a very long time.

I elected to have the special of the day which was a choice between Chicken and Dressing on County Fried Steak. I choose the Chicken and Dressing and 3 vegetables sides of mashed potatoes with gravy, green beans and cole slaw.

I rate the chicken & dressing at a 2, because I needed a microscope to find any chicken. The dressing was very bready and missing something, beside the traditional cranberry sauce which did not come with the dish.

The cole slaw was also a 2. The cabbage had a bitter taste; and the texture of all of the ingredients was inconsistent. It also had too much dressing or mayonnaise for my liking.

The mashed potatoes and gravy received the rating of 3. I’ve had better, but I’ve had a lot worse.

The green beans receive a 1. They were the standard out of the can commercial food product with no seasoning. Based on finding pieced of chopped plant stem, I would tend to believe they were of the economy or low budget line of commercial food products.

My wife ordered the medium fried catfish, hush puppies, cole slaw and fries. The fries had a seasoning salt, which was applied liberally and would have made this product too salty for me to consume.

She was not impressed with the fish. My son told me that he liked the chicken fingers, but I did not attempt to sample any of his. My daughter had basically the same selection as me with the exception of a different side items. She too was not impressed.

Of all the items that I sampled, I would give the hushpuppies a 5 as they were light, and favorable.

I can see this restaurant surviving as long as the locals support it as there is nothing else in the Central area to dine at that I am aware of. But for me to drive from Florence back there to dine again, I don’t see it happening, at least no time soon.

The price for 4 of us with drinks, less than $ 40.00. Definitely not worth the experience.
I had Sunday Lunch there this weekend. It was very good. I had the country fried steak, fried okra, purple hull peas, and corn nuggets. The food and the service was good.

Stinky, I'm sorry you had a bad experience. I would have been very irritated if the waitress was talking on her cellphone and not doing her job. And I hate finding those stems in green beans - yuck.
I haven't tried the food but my husband works in the Central area and decided to try it. Bad decision...They had a menu that one of the employees left at their business, so they called in an order based on the menu. According to the menu prices my hubby's should have been about $9 and his co-workers should have been about $13. When they went to pick it up they were told the totals were $16 and $20, they asked them why it was so high and they were told that they had to raise the prices on some things...Husband said food was cold and greasy and not worth the money they paid for it. I can understand having to raise prices to cover cost, but not almost doubling all your menu prices! So I don't guess I will be eating there anytime soon.
