Reading many of the threads here leads me to question - do normal people post on forums?

Are forums a place that the normal, works 40 hour a week, married, 2.5 kids with a dog kind of people spend their time?

I've spent more time away from this forum than on it lately and I must say reading some of the crap people post on here makes me wonder exactly what type of people have time to come up with some of this stuff.

People need to spend more time helping people with real problems, hands on, get involved type of work instead of quarreling over many of the things posted here that are based on opinions, not facts, and posted by people that desire nothing more than to shame our country, our servicemen and women, and our religious practices.

Signing off for now and just possibly for good.
Original Post
YES. Posting on forums is not unnatural. THERFORE NORMAL PEOPLE POST ON FORUMS. Actually, ELITE, INTELLECTUALLY SUPERIOR, INTERESTED AND INTERESTING PEOPLE POST TO FORUMS LIKE THIS ONE AND OTHER.

Do normal People work as Journaists? Or go to Church Saturdays and Wednesdays? Do normal people eat Wheaties?

Wow! I must be further from normal than I thought. Sounds like a new topic to me. How about, "What Is Normal?"
As long as I have been here, I have seen an immense amount of intelligence, I have learned a lot, and I guess that I am a better person for taking away the knowledge that members here have shared...

Normal isn't exactly the normal it was 15 years ago, lol... and I guess this post can turn out to be a really good FUN post if we want it to... because another thing I have learned about the people here is that there is a lot of humor on here, lot of laughs... even 'dry' humor that cracks me up... (yeah, you know who you are)..

TWO POINT FIVE KIDS???? Oooops, I messed up and had THREE.. but nothing I can do about that now, since they are all grown!!! lol..

And drdemo has a good point to.... in this day and time ... WHAT IS NORMAL???? Normal has taken on so many faces during my life it is unreal... We get acclimated to 'certain' things, and next thing you know, IT IS NORMAL.. .. So I guess that is a great question for the year 2007... Wink

YEAH!!!What he said! Maybe I need a "heavy wash" "rinse" and "high spin" to get back to normal! Hmmm........that leaves me wondering what temp and water level setting I should use.

And after going through all that you still have to decide if you want to drip dry or use the dryer. That leads to more decisions,
Being normal is too much work.
Who you calling normal? The voices in my head say that they resent being called normal. My dog just told me that he's normal, and will remain so if I will feed him steak and ground round from a golden bowl. WAIT, I got to put my tinfoil hat on.....that'll make me normal Eeker

Thanks for clearing that up, I thought I was going crazy! When in fact, I think I must have been tuned into the frequency at your house because I don't even have a dog.

I have had to start locking the doors though because the squirrels have been muttering something about eating my nuts. I think the birds must be cussing because everything they say keeps getting peeped out.

You are correct. I find it refreshing when someone posts their own thoughts and feelings, rather than cut and paste someone elses statements.

Yes, there are a lot of people who give honest consideration to topics on forums. But there are people who only want to stir up discord and create confusion on forums. They hide behind the anonymity of this type of forum, knowing that their true identity is secure. They surf various forums until they find one that they can "bait" with topics obviously intended to incite inflamed answers. I don't say they don't have a right to do so, just that they are a part of what other forum users have to endure. Forum owners do have a right to censure what is posted, and some do so more than others. Very few forum moderators will tolerate personal attacks, bad language or exposing the true identity of a poster.
[I think the question here is do any real people with original ideas and opinions post here or is this just a wasteland for political hate speech?]

I disagree strongly with this observation. Political hate speech is something that is judged by the person reading. No one has to tell me,nor did I have to be influenced by media to come to my opnion of GWB,,all it took was WATCHING ,LISTENING,and READING his political moves and beliefs. Now if I am on a thread on this forum and state my opnions of disgust for the man ,THAT OPNION IS ORIGINAL FOR ME,,it is MINE.
A wasteland? Sorry not everyone is living with a mindset of the 40s and 50s and think everything politicialns do is next in line to the very acts of God. Maybe had people had a different look at politicians way back then, versus believing everyword spoken things would be different now.
I have learned things on this forum. I have had some knowledge thrown on me by some of the posters.
Sorry this forum does not meet to your expectations of the Cleaver familys existence

but some of us like it!

I understood the post when I read the title. I was wondering the same thing myself. I wouldn't have used the term "normal people" though, because of what "normal" implies.

The sad thing is that it seems that these people ARE the majority in the world today.
It is sad, but seemingly true. Very depressing.

I have only been reading the forums for a few days and have noticed that most of the posts are not about news at all. Most of them are ...."What is your opinion about.....?", which I am not saying is a bad thing, but if it is only to stir up a debate, then to me it is useless.
I have also noticed that some of the posts are just opinions of one political party or another on a subject. Nothing to do with a news story at all, just forcing someone's opinion. The sad part is that it is "copy and paste" from somewhere else, showing that instead of an "original" idea or thought on a subject, the person spends their time searching for articles that mirror their thoughts and ideas and paste them here.
WHY? Who knows? Maybe to try to sway opinions which is mostly a waste of time, because everyone has an opinion based on life experience and are not easily swayed. Maybe these people think that there are tons of stupid people that can't think for themselves in the world, and that they will be coming to the TDF for guidance.
I'm not saying that running across something interesting and posting it on here is wrong. But obviously searching for things to force your opinion is a little silly. It is very evident.
But another thing that has bothered me about this forum is not only the flooding of "copy and paste" opinions. Also, it seems that there is a battle for power going on in the forum community. What I am talking about is that it seems that many of the "regulars" here do a lot of insulting each other and bickering back and forth, like in some power struggle. Personally, I am more impressed with behaving like adults and expressing opinions and respecting other people's opinions than I am by what you have done for a living, who you know, or how intelligent you think you are. It is quite obvious when a post or reply is put here for the sole purpose of making you look smarter than you really are or to brag about knowing something or someone that no one else does.

If you are sick of reading cut and paste posts by a certain person, or any posts by certain people.... You know what their posts are going to be about. Don't waste your time reading or replying to them. If their goal is to stir something up, don't give them that satisfaction. Someone else might reply and give them that satisfaction, but if they do, they won't do it many times before they figure out that is why it was posted and they will also stop wasting their time on such nonsense.

Just my opinion....probably will not make many people here very happy, but who cares? Who am I anyway? I have only been here about a week. I know nothing.
Well said, twoasone. The C&P posts are not read by me either. If I wanted to read news stories, then I'd visit the News section; or, if I wanted to read some political banter, I'd visit one of a zillion websites devoted to that. When I log on to this forum, I just want to read what's goin on in my local community....

As for NORMAL......depends on who's defining "normal". The sad thing is, for alot of people, it refers to other people that look, act, talk, dress, live, worship, think(you get the picture)...like them. Personally, I don't want to be considered normal

I would like to think I am close to normal. Smiler

I have a husband, and a 2 year old son. I am also a stay at home mom, that works as a volunteer Admin and Graphics artist for a family friendly pg/g-rated discussion/chat website.

I don't partake in many debates, for the reason that I hate debating. Two things that I really don't like debating on is Religion and Politics... And those two topics are brought up here a lot. So, Mainly I just read and learn from others.

I guess, I am though 1.5 kids away from being normal, and it's gonna stay that way for awhile. ONE is enough for me right now.. ROFLMAO!

We do have a dog and a cat though. Wink

This should be an interesting post. Big Grin

(by the way, the smilies here, are kinda strange.. lol)

" Forum owners do have a right to censure what is posted, and some do so more than others. Very few forum moderators will tolerate personal attacks, bad language or exposing the true identity of a poster."....
---------------------

Alacharger, that is so very right.. On our site, we do not allow people to personally attack anyone. Our site is pg/g-rated and family friendly, so the worse cussing you would see is hell or maybe d*mn... Our members aren't even allowed to use symbols in the place of those words because we do have kids or young members on there that do not need to see worse than that. Smiler

We usually though, ban someone for before exposing them, although the admin team on our site has a log of email addies to watch for when there are new members. Smiler

And we've been up and running for more than 8 years now on doing this. Most sites I frequent although the rules may be different, the moderator ediquette is almost always the same. Big Grin

I haven't been around here long enough yet to see if TD's admins are like that or not, but then again this forum is still very young in comparison and might not have found their niche yet. Big Grin

jimbo, I think you and I are thinking on the same wave length. I can occasionally get on here and post and read through, but there is no way I have as much time as some of the others on here....How do you work 40 hours or more and post almost every hour or every couple of hours?
Glad to see this post draw so much discussion and I appreciate your responses to my question.

I can honestly say that "normal" is what each person perceives it to be. "Average" is probably more what I was trying to say as some have suggested. Those that say they don't want to be normal, just remember that doesn't mean you have to be extreme.

I do think some take this forum way too seriously and way too personally. There is a reason in debate they have a time limit and a mediator. I think it would be good for a forum to have a limit on users for number of posts per day and words per post (of course this can't happen with the uncontrolled setup of multiple accounts.) This doesn't go against free speech any more than you asking someone to shut up for a minute while you get a word in.
It sure would challenge people to choose their words wisely and keep some from overrunning the forum with gibberish.

As for me the occasional post to express my opinion on something is about all I have time for. I do find posts about local issues of interest and it could be a good communication tool on things that don't make the paper or the news.

So no one has 2.5 kids? (that would be 2 and one on the way I reckon)
well i suppose none of you more "normal" folks do not have to sit in front of a computer for hours on end with their jobs. How do you know if maybe some of the folks you have judged as not being "normal" actually make their living on BY THE USE of a computer? There is such a thing as breaks,or have all you "normal" folks decided breaks that fall into the "normal" range consists of heading to a breakroom, grabing a coke and catching up on all the latest gossip?
I love to watch judgemental folks. They simply amaze me.

If you will read Manda's comment at the top of the page, ... the website that she is talking about DOES limit the number of posts people put up daily and she is one of the Admins + Graphic Artists on the site...... before they started that rule though, there would be 10-12 posts by the same person within a few minutes time... So, others couldnt get their posts/points across for all the jumble.

Limiting is a very good thing on boards of this nature, it gives everyone a chance, plus counter in the fact that the really good, well replied to posts dont just slip away by too many new posts going on.
We know one thing that is for sure. The high cost of goods could be less expensive if all the union workers were not on this board. KS is one good example of how union workers are a waste of good money. She probably needs to be doing her job instead of visiting these forums all day.

The origin of this forum could be a statement about union members. Big Grin Eeker
Yeppers, Mom has that right. We do limit posts on our site, and it's worked beautifully for the nearly 4 years it's been implemented Big Grin

Bama, you seem to be what my site would call an instigator, but then again, I've seen plenty on here that fit that. In the end, it only makes those that are doing it, look bad. Smiler

It'd be nice to see the adults here play together better. This turned into a somewhat fun post.. Which in my opinion, this forum needs just a few more of Big Grin

Why don't you just choose the nearest lake and go jump in it? That is how good ALL of your replies are on this forum in my opinion.

I am SOOOOOOOOO good at my job, that I can actually multi-task, for one thing,... But where in the world did you get that I post here on the board WHEN I am at work?????

I have a LOT of time on my hands.... GET IT???

My kids are GROWN... GET IT???

I have paid my dues... GET IT???

So lay off, and get a life, a REAL one where YOU won't be on the computer either, because your comments and insults are now getting old and boring!!! LOL

woo hoo Timesdaily.com forums rocks. Never ceases to amaze and delight me. Actually I am happy that we have this forum of debate. I dont agree with some people on here but other I do. I take the good with the bad and try to learn something from it all.
Oh and one more thing, I have noticed there is a serious amount of FUD issues, Fear Uncertainty and Doubt, being posted to this forum. Repeat after me, there is only a small statistical chance that the bogey man is in the closet. Sleep tight.

Is this in reference to me? If it is, I don't believe I'm an instigator, I simply express my opinions on the issue at hand. Since I'm pretty much in the middle, I've been called a left wing liberal and a right wing extremist. That just shows that I don't fall in line with a particular side. I form my own opinions and express them. Does that make me an instigator?

Ain't THAT the truth!!! Plus, the wrong nickname too... no sunshine there!! "The Lights Are On But No One's Home".... La La La La
I started coming onto this forum mainly because I am homesick. We're moving back home soon and I can't wait. I've lived up north (Loved the snow) and out west, both in big cities. But without family nearby, it's not the same. Will you think I'm a baby if I say I miss my momma and daddy? Smiler

I wanted to see what people in the Shoals thought and talked about. It's been a while since we moved off. I've also got some advice and helpful opinions from some here.

It does seem like some people post the same topics over and over again. It gets a little old and some of the arguments become ridiculous. But I like to exercise the freedoms that our great constitution gives me by either a) ignoring the post or b) posting a reply. But the angry name-calling and hateful remarks of some really turn me off, at times. That is when I usually turn off the computer and go do a load of laundry. Why do some people let other's anonymous words get under their skin so much?

For the most part it is great to see a lot of reasonable and intelligent thinkers come together in the Shoals. I can't wait to come home!

LOL! For the most part if it doesn't cook in the charcoal smoker it comes out of a can or package at my house. Think I have time to cook, post on forums, AND clean the kitchen? NOT!! Homemade mexican cornbread sure is alot better though. When they gonna make that in a can like biscuits though?

Speaking of Corn Bread, in connection with normal people and posting to forums.

THE PRICE OF CORNBREAD IS GOING UP.
Corn is much in demand for making ethanol, the resulting increase in demand, with a smaller increase in supply, is driving the price of corn upwards. It is also reducing the supply of the major ingredient in bread, wheat, as well as most other grains, since farmers like to make money, and corn is the crop with the rising value.
Side effect, increased illegal immigration as people who eat tortillas made of corn find their cost of living increasing, with no increase in the value of their labor.
IT IS ALL INTERLOCKING AND CONNECTED. Normal people MIGHT DO WELL TO AT LEAST READ WHAT WE FREAKS SAY.
My job growing up was to make the cornbread, which we had about 4X week.
self-rising cornmeal-2 scoops
self-rising flour- 1 scoop
1 egg
a little vegetable oil
some milk

thats how my mom taught me, no recipe other than the one in her head. It was so good around 9 o'clock when I'd crumble it in a big glass of milk. YUM! Razzer

Sweet milk or buttermilk? My grandfather used to love to eat cornbread in buttermilk.

I love cornbread too. My mother makes it in an old iron skillet. Good stuff. I always check to see if there's any leftover which I go over.
Gee,
Is it normal for a person to persue an abiding interest in current events, and the thoughts of other people?
It is for me.
When did gossip and the water cooler become ABNORMAL?
I thought this was a technological breakthrough for normal people to enjoy conversation with other normal people.
Does a shut in like me qualify as "normal?"
Of course not, it is not normal to be trapped in a house alone for hours on end. Normal people can easily get out and about, they can spend all the time they want on the prowl for girls, or graft, Cash or Cuties.
Is it normal for a Writer to look for inspiring ideas wherever they are likely to be found?
Sure, it is normal for the Writer, but everyone knows WRITERS ARE NOT NORMAL. Most people know that it's not normal to think. It sure isn't normal to write those thoughts down and share them with anyone willing to read them.
THANK GOD FOR ALL YOU ODD BALLS OUT THERE. And may the ABNORMAL CONTINUE TO LEAD THE DULL, BORED, APATHETIC, AND INSESIBLE TO GREATER GLORY.

I learned a little about positives and negatives, or odds and evens, in school. Two odds make an even. So, philisophically speaking, if a positive number of odd(which is also abnormal)balls got together would that make them even,or normalballs? So, with that in mind, if a bunch of us oddballs got together, wouldn't someone have to take a count before they considered us odd, or other than normal? Maybe we actually are normal. Still with me? LOL!!!
we have had some fun with this thread and the judgemental attitude of the poster presenting it.
But to spread just a bit of seriousness on here after visiting a friend yesterday which i had not seen in many months it gave me some thought on the very particular thread. Her children are grown and gone, the hubby has a good job so when her mom was paralyzed by a stroke it was a loving choice for her to quit her job and bring her mom home to live with them, versus slaming grannie in a nursing home. She does an excellent job caring for her,but still has many long boring hours. The computer is her source of in-home socialization.AND continueing education as she has already enrolled for some extra online courses thru one of the universities.
So I suppose she would fit into the posters little box of not being "normal",,,,,nope not at all. She is above and beyond normal.
I have been seeing this topic and ignoring it for a few days now, thought I would weigh in since I am under the influence of Nyquil from that **** flu I knew was going to hit me, Missy Dog is not help (GET A FLU SHOT, GET A FLU SHOT) SO the answer is NO! In the dog's humble thought somewhat "fuzzy" opinion: what you call "normal" people are the one's who sit back and TAKE whatever is given to them be it local, state or national politics and policies. I like to think posters on boards like these and others are ones who are VOICING their disapproval or in some cases consent and yes USUALLY do back up their typing on a board with typing to whatever representative needs to be written by whatever topic is addressed! Beats sitting at home watching TV and doing nothing! THE DOG
I probably should start another topic for this question but since we got hijacked by cornbread earlier. Can anyone tell me how to make good fried okra, squash or green tomatoes. My mother says just coat them in corn meal and fry them. But everytime I do it, it just doesnt come out right. I just end up with a grainy inedible mess. Any suggestions.

Try flour,then egg,then meal.

Before anybody starts about me being a yankee, my mother was 100% back in the holler country girl, and she did teach me how to cook.
Yep... I see NORMAL people... already talking about food... that IS normal!! lol... Smiler

Also, talking about okra, and squash... i coat them with a little milk before rolling them with cornmeal, it makes all the difference in the world as to how we like it... Wink , ,

It might help sometimes if I go back and read all those other pages before barking out! LOL The cornbread recipe is simple and I think someone else already posted it but here's THE DOGS: (I don't measure) Two or so scoops of self-rising cornmeal, one scoop of flour, 1 egg, 1 tablespoon of shortening (if you ain't got lard) and one spoon of sugar (was accused of this being Yankee but I like it anyway) preheat your over with your black skillet in it (and make sure you have coated the black skillet with shortening) then bake at 350 till you think it's done or a fork will stand up in it. As for okra, squash and fried green tomatoes, first SOAK all of the above in salt water, then dip in egg batter, THEN roll in a mixture of cornbread and a little flour, then have your grease on the stove on high, drop one in and if it sizzles you can start dropping em in. And I am typing this while I have the flu and can't eat a **** thing! Now that is group devotion! THE DOG
Texas Corn Bread
2 LARGE eggs
1 cup light sour cream
6 tablespoons butter, melted, not browned
1/4 cup milk
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 1/4 cup cornmeal. White, Yellow, or for a unique color, blue Indian Corn meal.
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt, or salt substitute
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
1 to 2 tablespoons sugar (optional) Most texans are sweet enough without the added sugar. Or, substitute Honey.
1 cup drained corn kernels, you can use canned, frozen, or slice them off the cobs.

Grease Pan. Heat oven to 400 F.
Gently beat the eggs sour cream, milk and melted butter together. (works best if the eggs are fresh laid or at room temp)
mix dry ingredients in a mixing bowl. Hold the corn kernels back.
Blend the Liquid and dry ingredients, add the corn kernels, fold in till just mixed. Bake 20 to 25 minutes till the top is lightly browned. ENJOY. Can Be Used to make Muffins, this recipe makes about 6 muffins.

You can modify the recipe by replacing some of the corn Kernels with chopped chili peppers. Any pepper will work, even bell pepper if you don't like hot spicy.
Liberals can cook. We Watch PBS like zombie neo cons watch Faux News.

BUY AMERICAN FROM AMERICANS!

The "secret" to washing an iron skillet is after you wash it to put it back on the stove then let it dry. Before you put it up, rub some Crisco on it and it's good as new. THE COUNTRY COOKING DOG

Here is the way I 'season' my cast iron skillets... and an egg will even slide off for a few days!!!

First wash very well, rinse very well, then put in oven for a few minutes to get completely dry.

Then put some sort of oil in it... remembering to line the walls of the inside of the skillet...

Put it on the top burner of your stove on HIGH, until it starts smoking pretty bad... then it is good to go... for a couple of weeks.

Yes, it smokes while seasoning, just one of the Yucky things I have to put up with to have a nice skillet that when turned upside down, the cornbread just falls out on its own!!!

On my smaller ones, the eggs won't even stick for SEVERAL cookings after seasoning.

You can use ANY oil, but when seasoning, I prefer plain old lard... it seems not to smoke nearly as bad, and seems to 'season' for a longer period of time.

My mom makes the best fried chicken in the world, too. She soaks it overnight in buttermilk and then dredges it in flour, cornmeal, salt and pepper, and a little paprika. She doesn't cook it in too hot oil. It melts in your mouth! I love food topics!

We ate at a Mediterraen/Lebanese restaurant today after church. The hummus and tabouleh was delicious. Is there a restaurant like that in the Shoals? I guess I should post this question on the restaurant talk, but I'll throw it out there anyway.
hey a lil secret to using those cast iron skillets before they are seasoned real good and still stick some things. Put it on the stove sprinkle salt allover the bottom and allow to get nice and hot. take it off the stove and use paper towels to rub the salt really good .
Also any of you that have a wood burning fireplace, grease that skillet up good and lay it in the fire and leave it in there for several hours, then just wash it up and they are usually ready to go after one good time in the fireplace. Thats what I have done to all of mine and iron skillets is the only ones I have ever used.
