Lynne Cheney probably wears the pants in that family, and W.'s relationship with Laura doesn't look like a controlling one. Being conservatives and traditionalists, Republicans have to look like they have traditional families, but that's all. As long they look traditional they can have nontraditional arrangements and relationships because appearances are all that matter.
