The President will be speaking at a vets. cemetery in IL on Memorial Day. Are the vets buried in the IL cemetery any less deserving than those buried at Arlington? Obama is not the first President to not attend the ceremony at Arlington. His attending the ceremony is more than most people will do, even his detractors.

In the interest of full disclosure I did not vote for Obama nor do I support most of his agenda. His political philosophy is too far left for my tastes. I am a vet with 25 yrs of active duty and Natl Guard time with 2 SW Asia deployments.
The vets buried in any cemetary are no less deserving than those buried at Arlington. Arlington is recognized as THE burial place for only veterans therefore it is recognized as a national monument to our fallen veterans not only in this country but throughout the world. At a time when we have so many serving and sacrificing in Iraq and Afganistan it would be more appropriate for our president to show the traditional honor for our military in Arlington.

Once again Obama's advisors failed him or he chose to ignore them. Going on vacation and dropping in on a more convenient cemetary will continue to erode his approval rating. But at this point he doesn't seem to give a rip about what anybody thinks of him or what the majority of the country believe we need.
I agree. As usual, his personal agenda is more important than what "the people" desire. He obviously runs his personal life in the same fashion as he runs our Wonderful Nation. It's an "I'm going to do as I please until my term is up, and there's nothing they can do about it!" attitude. Repulsive. Only 967 days left until Nobama!

Snopes on Memorial Day

Do I hear a big "Atta Boy!" for Bill Clinton?

Atta Boy! Big Grin Since some may not click the link, here's what it says.

quote:
Mike Savage stated that President Obama was not going to Arlington this Memorial Day but is sending VP Biden in his place. Obama is going to Chicago instead. Savage stated that this is the first time in history that a President has not laid a wreath at Arlington on Memorial day. Is this true?

FALSE

Origins: Memorial Day, now observed on the last Monday of May, is the day of the year set aside for Americans to commemorate the men and women of the United States who died while in the military service. On Memorial Day the President of the United States traditionally visits Arlington National Cemetery, where America's honored dead are interred, to deliver a speech in remembrance of those who died in service to their country and to lay a memorial wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns.

News that President Obama would be spending the 2010 Memorial Day weekend in Chicago rather than attending services in Arlington were attended by claims (like the example cited above) that he would thus become the first U.S. president to skip the Arlington wreath-laying ceremony since the inception of Memorial Day. This claim is inaccurate: On several occasions in just the last thirty years, U.S. presidents have been elsewhere on Memorial Day (either vacationing or attending to other presidential duties), while other administration officials represented them at the wreath-laying ceremony:

* In 2002, President George W. Bush was in France on Memorial Day and participated in ceremonies at Normandy (site of the D-Day landings) honoring the U.S. soldiers who fought and died in World War II. In his place, Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns.

* President George H.W. Bush (himself a World War II veteran) attended no ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery during his four years in office. In 1989 he was in Rome on Memorial Day (where he led observances at an American military cemetery south of that city), and from 1990 through 1992 he spent the Memorial Day weekend vacationing in Kennebunkport, Maine, while Vice-President Dan Quayle laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns.

* President Ronald Reagan was away from Arlington on Memorial Day on four occasions during his eight years in office: In 1981, he (who had been seriously wounded in an assassination attempt six weeks earlier) spent the Memorial Day weekend at his ranch in Santa Barbara, California, while Vice-President George H.W. Bush laid the wreath at Arlington. In 1983, he attended a summit meeting in Williamsburg, Virginia, while Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Thayer represented the administration at the wreath-laying ceremony. In 1987, he spent Memorial Day at the Camp David presidential retreat while Navy Secretary James Webb participated in the wreath-laying ceremony. And on Memorial Day 1988, he was out of the U.S., attending a summit meeting in Moscow.

* (NOTE: President Bill Clinton has no entry in this list because he attended Memorial Day ceremonies at Arlington each year throughout his eight years in office.)

On Memorial Day 2010, President Obama is scheduled to honor America's fallen heroes with a speech at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery near Chicago, while Vice-President Joe Biden takes his place at Arlington.

It never ceases to amaze me what people will just make up in order to justify their dislike of a person. Since the truth isn't enough, it might be time to re-evaluate why you (general you) dislike this person?

Good job, Detective Sue. Smiler

I didn't make it up, I saw it on CNN. Of course, they don't always get the news correct but it wasn't an intentional lie on my part. Wink
I don't like him because of the way he's running our country.
I think I can safely say that there are a number of Veterans, both living and deceased, whom would prefer that NO politicians show up just for photo ops/lip service at cemeteries, or any other observances.
The greatest respect, although it would still not be enough, would be for every person to pause and reflect today (between burger flipping, boating,a day off, etc.) upon the service/sacrifices made by these people.
For the ones who served, still serving, and the ones who paid the ultimate price.
Just my take...

Joy, I am amazed at all these lies. I get e-mails all the time from people who call themselves Christians , but are passing on these things, and almost every one is listed on Snopes as False. How people can deliberately lie about anyone, and then try to claim high ground is just beyond me.
The God I worship said that he was "The Truth", and that Satan was the source of deceit. Between you and me, I don't think I would want to be telling lies in the name of the Lord for political purposes. Things like that can come around and bit you in the butt./

The question was Do you approve of Obama's decision not to attend. With all he's doing to our country, this just might be one more thing to come back & bite him in the butt.
BTW, I have never claimed to be a Christian. A hypocrite I'm not.
I'm pretty sure that wasn't directed at you either, semi. You looking for a fight or something? Wink

I get those emails, too, have sent corrections back & links to websites where they can check future stories to see if they are factual before forwarding them. They keep sending them anyway.

I've been told crazy stories by Christian friends, told them they were false and where to look for answers. They continue to repeat crazy stories anyway.

I don't understand. I really don't. I certainly do NOT think they are all racist, but something is definitely wrong. It would make a great study by psychologists & I'd love to read their findings.

(tinabeth)let's hope only 967 more day till nobama, before 2012 he will pass an amnesty Bill and make everybody in America a Citizen that is not already one, take all the Hispanics and register them to Vote, Blacks and all the rest of the people who just don't know any better and he will be hard to beat, if our Country survives till 2012 and he is elected again you can kiss it goodbye. we might be able to save it if we can remove enough Democrats to make about a 50-50 ratio in the House and Senate in November

Hi JJ,

Can you show us your source which shows that other presidents have skipped the Arlington ceremony -- who and when?

Also, do you have a source that shows that he did, in fact, attend a Vet Memorial ceremony in Illinois? I understood he was in Chicago for other reasons.

Appreciate your help.

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill
