Hi Deep,

Jesus spent time driving out evil spirits, not exorcising witches. The spirits Jesus drove out of people were the demonic spirits, i.e., angels, who followed Satan when he rebelled against God.

Is Harry Potter bad for young children? YES!

Why? Because it glamorizes witches, witchcraft, and other New Age demons. No child should be allowed to read such tripe or see the movies. Just my opinion.

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill

Bill Gray, have you ever read Harry Potter? I have and I can tell you that any child smart enough to read those books is smart enough to know the difference in fact and fiction. The Harry Potter story emphasizes the power of good over evil. In that way, it isn't that different from reading the Bible.

Good point, after all they are both works of fiction.
Doesn't matter what Bill Gray & I say or think. God (if you don't want to believe; sorry for your luck sister) hates witchcraft and idolators. I take offense at the remark smart kids read Harry Potter. My kid is smart, a 94 average is pretty good. I read everything before she does. I read Harry Potter (not my taste) it's not appropriate. Neither is Twilight or George Lopez or Shake it Up or many other things. If other parents want to allow these things OK but don't down me because I don't allow them.
Thanks, all.

We all see the trend. Our religious friends seem willing to believe in all sorts of superstitions. We atheists are much more unlikely to.

Perhaps P.Z. Myers is right. Atheism is part of a larger movement of rationalists, scientists, and skeptics who are beginning to insist on evidence for claims of knowledge at all costs. The time for patience with superstition is over.

Opie makes a point. The bible and Harry Potter are all works of fiction. The difference is, J.K. Rowling doesn't claim Harry Potter is not.

You seem to be a very repressive parent. Let's hope your kid goes away to college and has the blinders removed.

Don't be surprised if your kid rejects Christianity as an adult.

uhh slim, who is Harry Hotter?

-----------------------

buff,,,,,,,Harry Potter is someone who made a billionaire
out of a deserving english woman and brought hours of fun to an untold
number of people.

The part I like best is the thousands of people employed to produce the
books and movies, good for business. The stories are harmless.

.
It's sad that parents puts such restrictions on a child all in the name of religion. It's as though they're sending a message that if you read certain books/do certain things, you can't be a Christian & you'll go to hell.
There comes a point you have to step back & let that child be a child.
If not, most times as an adult, they'll want to "spread their wings".

I'm sure he does. He also has problems with Disney - especially Mickey Mouse - Teletubbies, Ouija Boards, and thinks that "Santa" is how Satan spells his name in order to lure children into his grasp.

You have to remember, the Jesus Loves Me, But Hates Your Guts crowd is against anyone having any fun.

Imagination - other than their imaginary take on the Bible - is strictly forbidden and the direct path to hell. Such lack of imagination makes them bitter, hatemongers, disguising themselves as "Good Christians".

Just curious.....how do you feel about the "Chronicles of Narnia", or for that matter "Horton Hears a Who"?

I agree.

How could you NOT like Harry Potter books? I think anyone who says that has never read them. They are incredibly imaginative and delightful. They were written as works of fiction, not a book by which to live your life.

God gave J.K. Rowling (a believer herself btw...sorry some of you didn't get that memo) the gift of writing. I think He is quite proud of her work.
My dear Joy,

I read one of the H.Potter books. Good stuff, although written for the adolescent crowd. It holds up as such.

Have you seen the video "Jesus Camp"? The fundy lady preacher rails and rants about Harry Potter, as though JKR's books are biography, not fiction. The poor kids are denied that and every other pleasure. Have Kleenex handy if you watch it.

Some people.

I'm sure it's through reading them with my kids that I grew to love the books. They cover subjects kids deal with...well, she was a school teacher after all. The kids in the books, along with good times & developing close healthy friendships, experience hardship and suffer loss. In the end, through sacrifice and courage, good does triumph over evil. I thought her development of the game of Quidditch was brilliant. Smiler

No, haven't seen "Jesus Camp". I have enough crazy in my own family that I try to avoid seeking it out on purpose...haha.

Believe whatever you want. Since they can only affect me if I allow it, their existence means little to me.

I've never seen a demon...don't even know if that's possible. I've felt the presence of evil a couple of times, but since God inhabits our praises and evil cannot exist where God is, I just started singing praises and it left. Problem solved. Smiler
I believe in demons, ghosts, spirits, whatever.
I also believe that Harry Potter is a wonderful phenomenon- it has kids READING for pleasure.
They are brillian books.
I have always had trouble with the "anti-Harry" crowd. So all glory and power is to God, and not to "magic and witchcraft". Fair enough.
But this is FICTION, people, PURE FICTION.
If Harry Potter is evil, than I suppose the fairy Godmother that helped Cinderella out is evil too.
And the kiss that woke sleeping beauty? must be evil... Roll Eyes
There is much to gain in imagination and fantasy- let kids believe in fantasy, read, and develop their imaginations. Keep them grounded at the same time...
It can be done..
