It seems a bit like where Satan told Jesus to cast himself down because it was written that the angels would take charge and protect him. Jesus refused to intentionally put himself in harms way just to prove His faith, or to put God to the test.

God may be showing mercy because they do this in innocent misunderstanding, while looking to Him in faith to protect them.

As for me, I will look to God to protect me while I kill the snake.

I think these snakes are like the cobra charmers snake's, they've had their fangs removed. Either that are they are extremely blessed but crazy people.

the snake handlers get bitten all the time.

Strange how this particular act of faith came up after an effective treatment for snakebite was discovered.
