I have a 9 year old and she has a callphone. She uses it for emergencies.I`m a single parent due to the death of her father, but I want her to always feel safe and able to get intouch with me at anytime. You never know anything could happen and she may need me immediately. My daughter is VERY mature for her agr ,so I have no worries. She ask for it so I got her one (I have one also).

I see nothing at all wrong with a child having a cellphone, provided they are taught the Whys, whens and wheres that the phone should and should not be used. I do think they need to be taught these things.
Cell phones like the internet , driving privileges and credit cards can be abused.
Cell phones are here and I think they are here to stay but I do feel that people can become addicted to a cellphone they become addicted to any other thing. For instance , I was in a resturant not too long ago at dinnertime. A man and woman came in accompanied by three kids who looked to be inthe age range of 12-15. Well each of the kids had a cellphone pressed to thier ear and the mother also had a phone pressed to her ear. the father had a phone hookeed on his belt. Well this woman and those kids came into the place , talking on their phones and they continued to talk on their phones the entire time of their meal. In fact they left talking on their phones.
I don't think they were talking to each other because a couple of times one or the other would end their conversation and their phone would ring and of course they answered it and they were off an talking again.
Some family meal !
Also I attended a furneral a few weeks ago and believe it or not , some woman's cellphone rang. Of course she had it in stuck down in her purse and by the time she got it out and turned it off, the audience had been entertained by a rousting rendition of William Tell.
So that's why I think children should be instructed in the proper etiquette of cell phone use. Maybe if they are taught when they are young, they will remember and practice good manners with the little phone. It is quite apparent that many adults need some instruction along with the kids.

Kind of sad actually about the family at the restaurant. You hit on a key point about the kids being taught about the proper usage of cells,... but I'm wondering who is going to teach them. Most adults I have seen use them dont know it either. I got ran over in WalMart by a guy pushing a buggy and talking on his cell. I'm just glad we werent in the parking lot and he was driving. I try to never drive while using my cell. If I do answer I pull over. But back to the real topic. Im thinking it depends on the situation and the child. For security reasons, yeah I can see it. One thing you might consider is a prepaid phone for the child, that way if they go over on the minutes, you dont get a big surprise on your bill.
I ejoyed hearing your comments. I also agree with all you said. I believe some parents have NO control over their children and that`s the problem. If you raise a child in a proper manner and with respect and values, you might not see as much crime or problem children. I`ve been told my child is not and has never been a problem for anyone.I am by no means "bragging" but my child is in a gifted program at the school she attends. She is extremely smart and very talented, I`m very proud of her, as any parent would (or should) be. I lost my husband when she was 11 months old, she never really knew him, but we talk about him often, so she kinda has a connection to him. Afterall he is her only dad. She`s been through alot, I`m not making excuses for what all I try to make sure she has, she is by no means spoiled. Everyone that meets her loves her, she will always respect others. I don`t think I have any thing to worry about where she`s concerned. She`s a wonderful child. I can say that truthfully because she has had a PROPER up bringing.
Thank you for your kindness. I feel I`m raising my daughter the best way possible (the proper way) in this time and age. I`d also like to always know she`s safe and can get to me whenever she needs me (without thinking I`m too strict). I do know she will always confide in me and not all parents can say that. I`m very glad I can. Again, THANK YOU for your kind words.
