The Bible actually tells us practically nothing about Joseph. There are some extra-Biblical sources that tell us things about his life that may or may not be true. One if them is a book that is part of the Apocrypha called something like "History of Joseph" but I don't think it tells us what really happened to him in the end. I think it claims that Joseph was a widower when he met Mary, and that Jesus' brothers were actually from Joseph's previous marriage.

Some (including me) assume that since Mary is mentioned at the end of Jesus' earthly life (at the cross and in the room with the disciples when Jesus returned) and Joseph isn't mentioned, that must mean he wasn't alive then. This becomes more likely when Jesus asked John to look after her as if she was his mother.

Hi! Joseph was killed in a construction accident in Sepphoris. Joseph was severely injured by the falling of a derrick while at work on the governor's residence. The messenger from Sepphoris had stopped at the familiies caravan repair shop on the way to Joseph's home, informing Jesus of his father's accident, and they went together to the house to break the sad news to Mary. Jesus desired to go immediately to his father, but Mary would hear to nothing but that she must hasten to her husband's side. She directed that James, then ten years of age, should accompany her to Sepphoris while Jesus remained home with the younger children until she should return, as she did not know how seriously Joseph had been injured. But Joseph died of his injuries before Mary arrived. They brought him to Nazareth, and on the following day he was laid to rest with his fathers.

As I said regarding one other topic on the Religion board that was split into two subjects I hate when that happens because it introduces confusion into any subject or topic. I can though understand, in this case, the creation of a separate thread when, for whatever reason, the forum ceases to allow people to post responses under the current line.

This was the first that I have looked at the book but from what I could find out it originated sometime in the early 20th Century but without a knowledge from where the author got his/her revelations and information.

Hi Sally,

Matthew 1:16-17, "Jacob was the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, by whom Jesus was born, who is called the Messiah. So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; from David to the deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the deportation to Babylon to the Messiah, fourteen generations."

Matthew 1:18-19, "Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly."

Matthew 1:20-21, "But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, 'Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.'"

Matthew 1:22-23, "Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet (Isaiah 7:14): 'Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,' which translated means, 'God with us.'"

Matthew 1:24-25, "And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus."

In Matthew 2, we are told of Joseph and Mary taking the baby child, Jesus, and fleeing into Egypt where they stayed until an angel of the Lord told Joseph, in a dream, to return to the land of Israel.

In Matthew, there is no more mention of Joseph. Jesus began His ministry at the age of thirty; and Joseph obviously was already dead.

Luke, the most noted historian of the Gospel writers, tells us in Luke 2 of the circumcision and presentation of Jesus in the temple at the age of eight days -- and of blessing of Simeon and the adoration of Anna -- both of whom heralded Jesus as the Redeemer.

Then, Luke, in chapter 2, tells us of Jesus at the age of 12 being left behind in the temple -- and Joseph and Mary coming back for Him.

This is the last we read of Joseph in the Bible -- and all we really know of Joseph. The early church writers have little mention of Joseph. And, we do know that before Jesus began His earthly ministry, at age thirty -- He, Mary, and several disciples attended the wedding feast in Cana. Joseph was not present; indicating that he was already dead. And, we know that Joseph was not mentioned again, not even at the crucifixion, nor at at the resurrection.

Therefore, we cannot know what happened to Joseph. Where the Bible speaks; we can speak -- where the Bible is silent; we must be silent. We may speculate; but, we cannot say when Joseph died or how he died.

New Age books like the Urantia and hundreds of other New Age religion books can say what they like; it has no bearing on the truth. Stick with the Bible and one cannot go wrong.

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill

There are various legends and hagiographies that do address what became of Joseph, but none are canonical. No one with authority to teach orthodox faith knows what became of Joseph or of the Virgin Mary after her last mention in the Bible.

Church art portrayed Joseph as an elderly man with grown children but that due to their paupacity of Aramaic and the use of the word "brothers" to describe the relatives of Our Lord, in which case, had they been Semitic scholars, might have known that it meant any close relative, and not sibling alone.

None with the authority to teach in the orthodox Christian church on this topic, and to date they have not dared, though that does not stop many alleged Christians to follow various heresies such as those taught by women in pink wigs, old men in Oklahoma in their "prayer towers" or a ludicrous reworking of the Masonic ritual and some ad hoc "theology" from founding whole new religions -- why look at our own local rapurites! One would think the sun rose by Hal Lindsey's command and set at the will of Hagee. Why they even parsed out a phrase "personal savior" and a rote little prayer that gets them a get out of hell free card in many sects prevailing in the SE USA. The snake handlers at least have interesting heresy and great music -- at least in recordings, I disdain the wearing of clip-on ties and polyester and am afraid of going to find out for sure in person. My grandmother wore me out for "crossing the street " in St. Joe going to get a coke, but it was really for walking up to the holy rolly church. I am terrified of what she might do, even from the grave, should I go to a church that was rapturizing or tribulating -- much less snake handling!
