In the past month, I have witnessed three separate incidents of customers in line in front of me berating the store clerks about the gas prices. We need to remember that they are just poor working stiffs like the rest of us and have nothing to do with the prices. I know that while most of us know that and gripe at whoever will listen about the gas prices, these people hear it from almost everyone who buys gas and some of those people are downright RUDE. How about we all make a pact not to even mention the price of gas to the clerks anymore? I'm sure they could use a break. Cool

After I finished nursing school I worked as a cashier in a mini-mart for a few months. Salty is absolutely correct, and may I add...

1. It is not the clerk's fault that the store does not sell alcohol in a dry county.

2. It is not the clerk's fault that the owner does not choose to carry rolling papers, the Huntsville paper, or the candy bar you can buy any where in New York.

3. It is not the clerk's fault if your brand of snuff is a slow-seller. In other words, don't take them all down from the shelf in an attempt to find the latest date.

4. It doesn't make the clerk fond of you if you enter the store announcing you are robbing the establishment.

5. It certainly doesn't make the clerk want to be even polite if you ask her out every time your enter the store.

6. If you drive off witout paying for your gasoline (accidentally of course), don't be upset when the clerk calls the authorities. That's her job.
Unfortunately I too worked at a convenience store for many years and experienced this as well. Beyond that, I had been berated for as much as the price of cola's increasing.

People have bad days, then become frustrated with rising prices and what not, and take it out on the poor lackey working behind the counter. It's not only at the convenienc stores either. I've experienced it at numerous different jobs I have worked at.
Thanks for the post, Salty. One more thing & this is equally important...

If you see someone berating a clerk, take up for the clerk in front of the person berating them. If this person has no qualms about embarrassing a clerk in public, he should be able to take some embarrassment as well. There's nothing wrong with disagreeing with another person's assessment of a situation when they have stated it out loud for all to hear. JMHO

My thoughts exactly...I just finished an 8 hour shift that was a nightmare...I wish all of my Romeo wanna be customers would read this!
This is a good topic, Salty. Not only are working stiffs berated for the gas prices, others are berated for everything else going up in price because of the gas. Probably, alot of people on here have walked into a retail establishment griping at an employee for high prices. Remember, anybody working retail would rather be somewhere else with a better job, more than likely. It just shows your stupidity when you gripe at them, give em a break!
