I agree. Looking great Sheffield. I really need to get back over that way soon and check it out downtown. Been many years for me. It's great to see some action and interest being taken to make the downtown area a better place.

PS> This is that old hotel I was talking about over in another thread in Misc. not too long ago and someone replied that it was now called Park Place.

I think the hotel he had a pic of was older than the Grant, and for sure older than Park Place,. I think it burned like back in the 20's or something. Park Place was origonally Colbert Co Hospital, later replaced by Helen Keller Hospital.

I don't have my Sheffield history book with me, but I believe the hotel was something like the "Sheffield Hotel".

If I can remember, when I get back to where my books are, I'll report back .

Nope. I know the hotel grant burned down and is not the building in the picture. It's my understanding that Park Place used to be a hotel back in the 20's or 30's then was a hospital and was then renovated and is now what you see in the pictures.

If I am wrong maybe someone will correct me. It wouldn't be the first time.

YES! That is the Grant Hotel I remember. Sleazy looking little place. lol

seeweed, yeah it must have been sometime in the early 90's when it burned from what I remember that sounds right anyway.

Please do. I've been hoping someone would have more knowledge about it and would post it to that other thread or this one now. I'd appreciate it. My knowledge is very limited about Sheffield. lol

Yes, that's Park Place, which used to be a hospital years ago.

There's still more of Sheffield that looks bad than looks good.

It's not a place I will drive thru at night.

Sheffield Hotel burned in the 1940s. Park Place was built as a hotel but was later Shoals Hospital before the new one was built. Sheffield Hotel was where the "fountain" is now.

Thank you! That clears up so much. I appreciate it. I had been thinking that picture of the older building looked much bigger and is shaped different than Park Place but didn't know for sure.

I don't remember that store. I do however remember a place called "Southern Sash" in Sheffield that sold home improvement items and lumber and such kinda like the Lowe's or Home Depot of it's time. I can remember going there with my dad when I was just a little kid.

Anyone else remember Southern Sash?

Anyone else remember Southern Sash?

I remember both. Plowboys had a beautiful "thing" that was the back of a saloon bar. Mirrors

 beautiful carved hardwood Cherry maybe.

My dad used to get a lot of stuff at Southern Sash, wasn't a Lowes or Home Depot in those days, but SS had a lot of good stuff for home improvement.

Anybody remember the Temberline Hardware store where the Fox Plumming is now ?

I bought some throwing knives at Timberline back in the day.

Park Place was originally a hotel before it was Shoals hospital.  The coffee shop used to be in the right corner in front -- had lunch there several times.  The Sheffield hotel was across the street from the fountain -- next to the Prescription shop  You could still see the ruins in the 1950s. Reportedly, it was a really nice place. Once saw an old menu, pretty good food listed. My grandfather used to eat oysters on the half shell there.

Remember Plowboys well, three stories of antiques and junk.  When it burned, dozens of rats were made homeless.  Remember the Timberlake hardware store, went to school with Lewis's son.  Remember Southern Sash. You can still see the lumber sheds and buildings on the other side of the tracks.

I was a little too young to go, but remember hearing about it.  Plowboys was one of my favorite places and I bought a lot of building material from Southern Sash. I hated to see it close.

Just to remind everybody, there are walking tours at 10:30 (I believe) on Saturdays down North Montgomery. My daughter did it last week and said it was real good...........You're welcome seeweed!  it's strange I remember things from long ago better than last week  LOL!!!  I remember going into the old Colbert County Hospital, carried in my father's arms with mother beside me to have my tonsils removed when I was 3 years old. I remember I was wearing a yellow gown, going toward the entrance. This was when the old building was the only one and later remodeled and expanded.  The very first Shoals hospital I think was a business venture of a group of some of our best local Doctors at the time.  I learned to transcribe Dr.s orders to the patients charts when it first opened. Of course Shoals Hospital is in Muscle Shoals now and has a good re****tion for patient care, at least that's what I've heard.

I've really been enjoying walking down memory lane too with you guys. Some of you know much more about stuff I thought I remembered about certain things. Things you remember from childhood aren't always that accurate as you try to recall them as an adult. LOL

I love history or more to the point local history.

One evening I was at a stoplight in Russellville on 43 and there were a bunch of buzzards circling over the funeral home across from Pizza Hut. Was like something out of a horror/ gothic movie. LOL I can still see it so clearly.
