BRUSSELS – Europe was leaning to the right Sunday as tens of millions of people voted in European Parliament elections, with conservative parties favored in many countries amid a global economic crisis.

Opinion polls showed right-leaning governments edging the opposition in Germany, Italy, France, Belgium and elsewhere. Conservative opposition parties were tied or ahead in Britain, Spain and some smaller countries.

Britain, Ireland, the Netherlands and five other EU nations cast ballots in the last three days, while the rest of the 27-nation bloc voted Sunday. Results for most countries were expected later in the day.

The EU parliament has evolved over five decades from a consultative legislature to one with the power to vote on or amend two-thirds of all EU laws. It has 736 seats and lawmakers serve for five-year terms.

With most votes counted in Austria, the main rightist party was gaining strongly while the Social Democrats, the main party in the governing coalition, lost substantial ground.

The big winner was the rightist Freedom Party, which more than doubled its strength over the 2004 elections to 13 percent of the vote. It campaigned on an anti-Islam platform, with posters proclaiming "The Occident in Christian hands" and describing Sunday as "the day of reckoning."

This is an encouraging trend. People in the Western world are starting to reject the nihilistic immigration and socialist policies of the Leftists.

I'm looking forward to the 2010 elections and if the trend continues into 2012, I'll expect Obama to be a rejected one-termer!

Thank goodness for this economic recession.
"If ever a time should come, when vain and aspiring men shall possess the highest seats in Government, our country will stand in need of its experienced patriots to prevent its ruin." ~Samuel Adams, 1776.

The good news is in England, proper, (i.e. not Wales or Scotland). Labour lost control of all the local council govenments -- total wipeout. These councils developed into super nannies. People were given criminal records for using the wrong color recycling bags or leaving a trash can lid open four inches. SWAT teams were sent to issue the summons -- armed police in England delivering what should be misdemeanor tickets. The left in full route.

Lol.......The difference here is that our economic downturn started under a "Conservative" leadership.

You're calling the defacrat-led congress of the last 3 years, Conservative??? WOW! Brings a whole new meaning to the word. Roll Eyes

You think these problems started just in the last three years? This has been in the works since FDR died. Nothing but a bunch of conservative republicans and corporate democrats to blame for this. However, we elected a good one this time. One like FDR (the greatest president of all-time).
Thats how they rationalize their thinking. They conveniently forget 6+ years of growth, record highs in the stock market, housing boom, job creation, etc, even considering the aftermath of 9/11.
Introduce the Pelosi led Congress, and their thwarting of oil drilling, tampering w/ banking policies, raping the mortgage industry, and along with the MS media, blaming America for all the worlds ills and casting ANY and EVERY move Bush made as evil.
