CALERA, Alabama -- Calera Police Chief Sean Lemley said today that evangelist Matt Pitt flashed blue lights on Interstate 65, pulling people over, then sped around them before he was pulled over.

"We had a witness who had been following the vehicle and stayed on the phone with us," Lemley said. "He was activating the blue lights. You're portraying yourself as a law enforcement officer when you do that."

Pitt, 28, founder of The Basement youth ministry, then flashed a badge and claimed to be a Jefferson County deputy, Lemley said.

He was arrested and charged with impersonating a peace officer.

Interesting.

He may want to "steer away" from crime himself in the future.

I woiuldn't think so. Roger Lovelace was manager of the Florence Gas Dept. for several years. He was forced to take retirement after several "problems" were found in that city organization. As far as I know, the FBI investigation was never complete.

He then went to work for Brinks Security, where he had some kind of badge, purchased a blue light, and set about stopping cars. His faux career in law enforcement came to an abrupt end when he stopped a Florence police officer, who was...on his way to church. It then came to light that Lovelace had been indulging in his odd hobby for some time.

In the mean time, Lovelace's brother-in-law and several others had benefited greatly from city contracts. We as taxpayers are the losers.
