Pelosi is an authorized citizen. She does not have authority to NEGOTIATE. But she not only has the right, but the responsibility to meet with foreign leaders in her position as Member of the House of Representatives.quote:Originally posted by Sassy Kims:
Well, first and foremost is she committed a felony by going there. She violated the Logan Act. From Wikipedia:
The Logan Act is a United States federal law that forbids unauthorized citizens from negotiating with foreign governments. It was passed in 1799 and last amended in 1994.[1] Violation of the Logan Act is a felony, punishable under federal law with imprisonment of up to three years.

Not to mention that she's not a diplomat...evident by her misquoting of the Israeli Prime Minister.

She is not the only US House member meeting with Assad. http://forum.signonsandiego.com/index.php?
And, the Title of this thread is A MISREPRESENTATION USA Today's Editorial Board does not represent, in any way, disagreement with GWB on this issue, and they have been favorable to Bush and Company MORE often than not.
Pay attention. She acted as a messenger between Israel and Syria. She did not sit down at a table with proposals for a peace agreement. SHE WAS LEARNING THE ISSUES, THAT SHE WILL HAVE TO VOTE ON IN THE FUTURE. That is her job. In the process, she was given a message to carry to Syria on behalf of Israel. She had no right to negotiate for either Israel or Syria. She was the messenger, not the negotiator. Asserting that she failed to negotiate a settlement has to be a misrepresentation. SHE WAS NOT NEGOTIATING, SHE WAS STUDYING.quote:Originally posted by Sassy Kims:quote:Originally posted by EdEKit:Pelosi is an authorized citizen. She does not have authority to NEGOTIATE. She's not authorized or qualified to negotiate or make foreign policy...you admit she is not authorized to negotiate..then why was she trying to negotiate a peace between Syria and Israel? And it comes dangerously close, if not actually is, making policy by buddying up to Assad and making offers to him that the Israeli Prime Minister called her on the carpet about. If she wants to make fact finding tours, she needs to learn how to keep her mouth shut and look and listen, not try to do somebody elses job.

How in the world does anybody expect to have "normalized" relations with another country if we take the course of "you do what I say, or I will not talk to you" (do it my way or I'll take my toys and go home)
Pelosi had every right to talk to the head of Syria, or any other country she wants to talk to. Bush is just nuts, we need some kind of dialogue with other countries in the world.
Or, as exemplified by his Public Announcement, to Democrats in the House and Senate. Bush HAS REPEATEDLY SHOWN HIS ARROGANCE BY REFUSING TO SPEAK TO PEOPLE WHO MIGHT DISAGREE WITH HIM.quote:Originally posted by excelman:
