"Now, when this arrived at the CIA, it had basic mistakes, and if anyone had bothered and taken the document, gone to the internet, done a Google search, they would have seen that the people named as members of the supreme court were no longer members of the supreme court, that what was described as the state court of Niger had gone out of existence. It was now, in fact, called the supreme court. So, in a supposed official document from Niger was replete with basic mistakes. The problem was that the CIA already didn't believe this information and cast it aside.

"Interestingly, the Defense Intelligence Agency, ultimately controlled by the Pentagon under Donald Rumsfeld, picked up this document, wrote a version of what it said, took out any sense of doubt, any sense of questioning the information, and prepared a document of its own and placed it on Dick Cheney's desk one week later, February 12, 2002."

Getting to the bottom of this particular story requires reading foreign sources. ANSA, the Italian News agency said, in an article some time ago, that the British Information on the Yellowcake came from the Italian Intelligence services, and that they had gotten the information from the CIA.

I agree that you have to search out side the US corporate media to get the real story and it is an interesting theory but I am not so sure. I believe that the US soldiers were trying to kill the Italian journalist. Even though the independent press has reported that US soldiers fire and kill innocents at road blocks these soldiers did know she was coming. She is an independent reporter, not an "In bed with the US military" and has written the truth about the crimes, killings and devastation by US military forces.

I don't want to miss spell the Italian journalists name but she has been a guest on the program Democracy Now and believes she was the target.

I haven't read the book yet and want to see what details he presents but it was hard to follow the Niger story when the Plame outing occured. I looked into this a while ago and what I have found is that there was a break in at the Italian Embassy in early 2001, Jan or feb, before the 9/11 attacks. Embassy stationary was stolen.

A little while later forged documents were passed on to an Italian reporter on embassy stationary and then to Italian intelligence who shared them with the US and British. The US dismissed them but the British held back comment and kept them under review. Independent investigations suspected the Italian "Con man" Rocky Martino to be connected to former Iran Contra conspirator Michael Ledeen, who was part of the Iran Contra pipeline. A sort of secret team.

Seymour Hersh also reported that a new "secret team" was created of many of the former Iran contra team, like Poindexter, Abrams and others in the Bush White House. The Bush team were already planning an Iraq invasion when they took office and looking for an excuse. They hoped to use the Niger papers along with their other misinformation from the Iraqi con man, Chalibi, along with a host of lies, dirty tricks and arm twisting to present false evidence for their invasion of Iraq and then the rest of the Mideast.

I should wait to read the book but as far as I understand this the secret team, created by Cheney and basically the people of the PNAC were behind the break in and the documents.

They want to control the region and the oil. They stole the presidency and went full steam ahead. If we were winning in Iraq none of this would have come out and no one would care.

I have even talked to one well know fellow reporter who told me he had worked for the CIA in Berlin in 1961 and '62. He didn't show me a badge or anything, but I know he was a foreign correspondent, and that he was fluent in French, German and Russian. He made me look like an amateur a few times, Once in French, once in German and Once in Russian. I worked with him, and needed his help to get foreign telephone operators to connect me with sources. Why the phone operators at the Japanese Ministry of Defense speak French, but not English will remain a mystery to me forever.
He was my boss, and I was a genuine beginner. It was my first reporting job, and he was more than happy to give me assignments, and help me complete them.

That's an interesting thing, saying the CIA was behind it. Both of our versions may be connected in a way.

The version that I read, and is also stated on Democracy Now, is the papers came to the Italian reporter who turned them over to Italian intelligence. She was use to receiving information from this source, but he was not always reliable. Another Chalibi type figure.

But here's where the two versions may connect. Michael Leeden was behind it. He was also involved in the Iran Contra pipeline and this new secret team operating from the White House. It was a covert operation and it may or may not have been outside the official CIA.. This secret team could be CIA using hidden channels for official denial.

Leeden is connected to the team operating out of the White House and they were behind the break in and the forged documents. Whether it was CIA or not it was still a white house operation. If my original information is correct about the break in at the Italian Embassy it occurred before the 9/11 attacks. Bush and bunch were planning the war before the election. That's why they stole the 2000 election and the Supreme Court stopped the count and allowed Bush to steal it.

The Church Senate Committee hearings and the Pike Committee in the mid 70's, after the Watergate Scandal, found the CIA had recruited and used reporters to write propaganda. Former CIA agent John Stockwell wrote and spoke of how he used journalists in his secret war in Angola.

I have followed the CIA since 1969 when I heard the late folk singer Phil Ochs say he had been to South America and the CIA had helped the military set up torture chambers and taught and supervised torture techniques. Philip Agee wrote about it in his book in the early 1970's.

During the 1980's and 90's I subscribed the the publication Covert Action Quarterly, (Then called Covert Action Bullitin) and have read a number of books by Ex CIA agents, journalists and historians on the subject. I have seen John Stockwell speak twice. The CIA is the criminal organization of the US government but the crimes of the our govenrment are hidden by the media from the American people.

Yes, I am familiar with Posada and have followed his case for years. He had actually been free for years but was arrested in a plot to kill Castro in Panama. It is believed the CIA aided his escape from the Venezuelan prison with bribes and financial aid.

After years of pressure from Human Rights groups the US arrested him on immigration charges but recently released him. I believe he is to face a hearing but will probably be let go.

The official reason for their denying Venezuela's extradition request is that he will be tortured but the relied on one wittiness, another right wing Cuban to make it's ruling. No one has ever accused the Venezuelan government of torturing prisoners.
The US has also sent "suspects" to countries that did practice torture.

He has openly admitted being a CIA operative. The US openly funded right wing Cubans in the 60's and it is believed that they secretly fund them today. They carryout attacks and bombings, specifically on agricultural and economic targets. They have also bombed hotels.

In the 1980's the US created, funded and help train the Nicaraguan Contras, who carried out a reign of terrorist attacks against civilian targets, which the US called "soft targets" in the media. The CIA put out a manual for them on assassinations and carrying out attacks against civilians as to terrorize them.

They also created, supported and trained and supplied bin Laden's merry little band of Islamic fanatics in Afghanistan. There is also evidence they created, supported, and oversaw right wing death squads in Latin America. John Negropontio was the Ambassador to Honduras and was believe to be in charge of the operation. After his brief tenure in Iraq we saw the rise of Shiite death squads.

Get A Grip Man...Americans don't do that kind of thing. At least not in the bright light of day.

You have just enumerated a whole series of activities that have brought nothing but shame and approbation to the USA in South America. The same kind of list exists for Asia, the Middle East, Indonesia, and large parts of Africa. But don't forget, Americans don't put up with that kind of Crap. Not if anyone else tries it anyway.

Remember, rich people are the good guys, that is how they got rich, you know, doing well by doing good.
