Since we are closing in on Halloween, what horror movies have scared the beejeebies out of you? Why?

I think Silence of the Lambs was one of the most frightening movies I've ever seen because that could - and does - really happen. I can't get into slasher flicks and things like Saw and Hostel. I like psychological thrillers much better.

So, what movies make you wanna leave the closet door open at night??? Eeker

The original War of the World's was one of the creepiest movies ever when I was a little guy. When I became a big boy a few years ago, the new War of the World scared me just as bad.

I just can't wait for the new movie "The Day the Earth Stood Still" with Keanu Reeves. That guy can act about as good as a cardboard box but that is exactly the right character for this remake of another movie that scared the piss out of me as a kid.

Why? I suppose the remakes speak directly to that little boy that lurks just under the skin of any man. That little boy no like space aliums.
An Occurrence at Owls Creek Bridge is a chiller and was written by Ambrose Bierce. He based several of his Civil War set short stories on his own experiences as a Union soldier. I believe the setting was based somewhere around where the Battle of Shiloh was fought.

Read his memoirs of the war sometime - which are equally creepy and horrific. His account of what happened to the 9th Illinois at Shiloh will send a shiver up your spine.

The 20th Tennessee under (then) Lieutentant Thomas Benton Smith chased them into a ravine and kept going. Cannon and musket fire set the woods around the ravine on fire and the 9th was trapped in it to burn alive.

Ambrose Bierce was among those who discovered the charred remains the next day.

They say, if you are at Shiloh, you can walk a short distance through the woods to the ravine where you will hear no sounds of any living creatures. No bird song. No squirrels scurrying about.

Only the eerie popping and crackling of wood burning. If you listen closely, you might hear the screams of the men of the 9th Illinois.
Remember the X-Files episodes with Mr. Toombs? (shudder) He could maneuver through peoples' air conditioning systems and then he'd eat their livers! He was scary.

One of my faves was the Fluke episode. He later went on to write some of the episodes. Stephen King wrote one about an evil doll a man dragged out of the sea. It was spooky.

What was that show on Fox about 15 years ago where the brother and sister owned an antique store and had to exorcise evil spirits from possessed antiques? I loved that show. (Incidentally, Billy Bob Thornton has a phobia of antiques!)

That would be Friday the 13th, The Series. It's on a gazillion times a day on ChillerTV, channel 257 on DirectTV. I can recite the dialogue of every episode.
Oops, and they weren't brother/sister. They were cousins who had never met until they inherited the store from the evil Uncle Louis. They jumped the shark when the male cousin, Ryan, regressed to childhood, reunited with his estranged mother, and was replaced by some guy named Johnny who used way too much hair gel. It was so 80s.

............I need edumicated here,,,what in the world does that expression mean?? I have never heard it>

Sorry about that.

Remember the Happy Days episode that had the Fonz jumping over sharks on water skis? I guess it's become a generic phrase to represent a rather sad attempt to restore popularity. An act of desperation, you could say.

Oops, the Fonz was on water skis, not the sharks. More coffee, please. :-)

I don't remember the exact name of the old movie, but it was "Pod People from the Planet Mars" or "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" or something along those lines. Big pods grew into emotionless people and killed the real people when they fell asleep. CREEPY......

It was Invasion of the Body Snatchers....and the original was scarier than the remake.
