Whose bright idea was it to put 48 flag poles with 48 American flags on them in Diebert Park? Not 50 flag poles, mind you, but 48! I heard it is in tribute to all the fallen soldiers, which is a wonderful idea, but all those flag poles look so tacky. Wouldn't it have been better to put just one big flag pole with one big flag? I think they look just terrible and take away the beauty of the park.

Was it done for memorial day? Or is this something that is permanent? Just curious.

If you have a problem with displaying the American Flag then maybe you should find another country that you are more proud to be in... Its no wonder this country is 'going down' is because of people like you that think its tacky to display the flag. It shouldnt matter if it was 48, 50 22, or 3025235 of them out there. Remember the reasons they are there, not how tacky you think it looks...

always going to be a complainer, no matter how nice the gesture.
I say if you feel it's so tacky, by all means avoid the area.
or another thought; do some research, see who the flags represent, be extremely thankful, and pray for the families directly affected, and salute this country and all our soldiers.
There is nothing wrong with what the original poster posted. I think we all agree that its nice to do things for other people, especially when it is honoring our veterans. But if they think the display or method is tacky, then they should express that.

Being that something is done out of goodness, doesn't mean it is always done right or appropriately.

Personally, I haven't seen the flags. I don't know the purpose for the 48 being chosen. I don't know if it's tacky or beautiful. But there certainly is nothing wrong with voicing an opinion about it.
Betern, while it is silly to criticize them for "coming up 2 flags short" when the intent wasn't to represent the 50 states is silly, it is not silly to express an opinion that you do not like the display. I haven't seen it. I assume it's nice, but that doesn't mean everyone has to agree.
Being that this is a Holiday, a day for Remembrance of those that gave their lives so that we Can live in a free world, I just want to say, I don't care how many flags are there, how they are shaped, in what configuration. I'm just glad that someone thought enough to do it. Let's just be Thankful and Thoughtful today, especially of all our Veterans old, young, living or gone, that gave us the right to Agree to Disagree. Happy Memorial Day Everyone!!!!!!

It is not silly and small minded to criticize them for chosing "design" over meaning. I feel it is a wonderful and needed gesture, but most people who see it will count the flags and say the same thing..."why 48?" Memorials always have deeper meanings than "looks", just how Washington, D.C. is laid out as a city and even the number of steps on buildings has meaning. So why wasn't someone bright enough to say "50 flags, one for each state to honor their fallen". I feel they should also be illuminated and flown 24/7/365.

Witty retort. I will make a note to supress all opinions that aren't to your liking. Do you EVER add anything to a conversation? You throw around half thought out one liners with no intent but to insult someone. You never research anything. You never provide a thoughtful response. You never further the topic, you just say stupid stuff. How very Alabama of you.

All of your posts can be summed up in one of two ways.

1.) Nuh UH!!!
2.) Hell yeah!
My husband works for the park and recreation dept of Florence and if you would like to donate $500 for a flag pole so there will be 50 flags then you can but until you have then don't belly ache about what everyone else does these places don't have extra money to spend if they did the city wouldn't have to be cutting back on things in town so just live with it

Per a member of the Exchange club, that is exactly what will happen.

If anyone is unhappy with the design, you can donate approximately $500 per pole and they will be glad to up it to 50.

That will look very nice, emotional as it should be. And I think the design is a good one.
$500 a pole? quite a price, but nothing compared to the price paid to have them fly over this country. If I had it (extra money) I'd foot the whole thing. And if a money drive is started, I'll gladly give. Maybe even a corporate donation (provided they don't want a plaque at the bottom) could happen.

Oh, I am from Texas, but I'm proud to call Alabama home and proud of it.

I have never stated Nuh Uh or certainly not H___ yeah. you are a liar. but I would expect nothing less from you.
And how are you furthering the topic with your last post on this thread?

Are you saying that the Exchange Club could only raise enough money for 48.

I'm sure that Alaska and Hawaii feel very disappointed. Those two states had veterans to lose lives in wars even before they became the 49th and 50th State.
