If this thread goes for a while, someone should make another list..

1. I am now the Cox Creek baseball fields. What did I used to be?
2. I am long demolished, but young poeple used to climb me for a great view of the river. What am I?
3. I am a park that used to have a huge duck pond where you could feed the ducks. Which park am I?
4. I am on Tennessee Street and down the street from the old library. I was the Martin Industries offices for a long time. What retail chain used to be in this location?
5. What was the location of the first youth soccer games in Florence?(I was in the this league when it first started).
6. In 1982, what two youth sports gained recognition when they advanced to national competitions.

1. The old fairgrounds, where Mr. Chikin used to be. You can still see the building on the Olive place on Fairground Rd.
2. The old railroad trestle close to the Indian Mound.
3. Martin Park it is. I swam in it too.
4. Sears
5. McFarland Park flood plain next to the golf course.
6. The U14 soccer team(Florence Flames) placed 3rd in the AAU national championships. The Florence little league also made nationals that summer.

Cow pastures! and some Big Grin Coffee students rang cow bells at the ball games.

Yep, and Coffee students called Bradshaw "Cowpasture Tech" for years.
Also, I remember when the Goodyear blimp overflew Florence in the late 70s twice in one week. It came over with it's signage working both times at low altitude and scared the crap out of all of us Windcrest Heights kids. It roared, and the lights were visible for some distance. We thought it was a UFO. It had been to the Iron Bowl.
remember when veterans dr. used to be union st?

remember those buildings that were in front of the pool room on tennessee st?
seems like a record store called turning point was there. i scored some great posters there when they closed. now it's a parking lot.

remember when the green stamp store was in the legend's building?
I remember those carnivals...and also tent revivals being held there.
At 7 points Shopping center they also had carnivals in the area where the grocery store now sits.
-------------
And i lived on Union st. when it was a two lane dirt/gravel road. In the summer we loved watching the water truck drive by, spraying the road to hold down the dust.

Quality Stamps was also in the Legends building. I only remember S&H being in their original location on Florence blvd. then in a building on the left by the bridge.

From what I understand, the Norwood Theater was where that empty lot is at 7 pts, on Wood, where that park is now, murals on the buildings, down from Peck Ace. Didn't the building burn? Any clue what year?

Actually, it burned twice. It was refurbished, but only last a few years before it burned again.

The park is called Pocket Park. I would like to see it re-named something more meaningful. Dan Davis built the Norwood during WWII--perhaps Davis Park.
Years ago, I was helping Sutherland Sound set up sound equipement for a Handy Fest gig in that park where the Norwood was. Someone said that there was a mix up in making that park..that the stone/concrete should have been in the lower part and the grass at the top. It does seem backwards.. I don't know for sure. I wish I could find a picture of the Norwood Theater.

I didn't realize there was ever a TG&Y downtown. I know Grants, Sears, etc.. was down there, at one time.

I remember the TG&Y Family Center store on Florence Blvd. I went to the store closing sale. That space was later occupied by Lowes, and now by Hobby Lobby.

Downtown Florence, where the Uniform Shop is now located.
It was there for several years.

Martin Park - Where exactly was the pond?

I remember that, in the early 80s, those tunnels were closed up and locked, then one day I saw them open and there were trains in there. Seems that there used to be a passenger train that went around the park. I wonder whatever happened to that train and equipment?? Any info about the train or memories?

The pond was in the middle where the playground is now located. It was pretty big.
I rode the train many times when i was little and going through the tunnel was a big thrill. I think the train was closed down after some injuries occured.
They also use to have some great Easter egg hunts in the park.

WOW! You know, I had absolutely forgotten about the ducks & train rides, until I read your post. How could I have forgotten about all of this, as many times as my parents & grandparents took me there?
Gosh~ Where does time go?

YES! Now I do remember those little carnivals!
I was a (sheltered! lol!) only child, so my mama wouldn't let me ride too many of those rides,
because she would say that they were just "slapped up" and "yanked down".
God love her. I am the SAME way with my daughter today, when it comes to the Fair.

Sorry Yall!
I'm REALLY not trying to hijack this thread!
I Promise!
Just trying to catch up on what I've missed!

No bhk, they do not fly out there any more.
They haven't in a long time.
My grandfather was a member for years, but I think participation really fell out, so they stopped it all together. My pap-paw still has all of his airplanes, and last summer, took my little girl & me out to some abandoned place in Industrial, and flew 2 of his planes, & they are awesome, but I am definately NOT a pilot!
I crashed & burned the very first time, and gave up.
I was so afraid I'd tear up one of his planes.
But my 13 year old daughter, did very good.
She must have inherited it from my pap-pawSmiler
I grew up on the West Side and this is where I would get the stuff listed in 1982

1. I would catch a ride and go to Hickory Hills or the Cedars after dark and find an unattended bike and just help myself.

2. Wilson’s Fabric Center.

3. T.G. &. Y.

4. Wilson Gro.

5. Com-Pak store on Cedar St. (There used to be a guy that would fence lost property
that worked there).
6. K-Mart
