Forum users,

Lately there have been a large number of threads posted in incorrect forum places - politics in news, entertainment in news, etc.

The forums were divided by topic at your request and are done so to make participation in the forums easier and more convenient for all.

Please consider where you are putting a thread before you post it to avoid confusion.

Thanks as always for your participation and cooperation!

I would like to know what happenend to the thread about the retirement in Sheffield! This is a topic that the parents need to know about as well as community. Why did you pull it? Because it was the truth. I swear I believe that the Times Daily are in with the Top people at Sheffield City Schools. So pitiful!!! But we won't give up. Put it back!!!!!
Most forum members would agree as many forum members have addressed this issue on this forum place as well as others. We have named names and suggested remedies including separating religion from politics as politics was separated from news.

It is well known who these members are who cannot follow simple instructions, so rather than paint all forum users with a broad brush, why not sanction specifically those who continually cause the problems?

It reminds me of a FSU axiom. There were two newspapers: Pravda and Tass. One means “truth,” the other “news.”

The saying goes, “In Pravda there is no Tass. And in Tass there is no Pravda.”

Perhaps you could teach the challenged the difference.

Спасибо.

Bud
AM,

I fully appreciate and agree where you're coming from even though I have done a little evading myself from time to time.

This is your game and you set the rules. No problem. Thanks for letting us play.

But honestly, when words like the mascot of the University of South Carolina are filtered, or when the common name of a drink is filtered, or the pilot's compartment in a aircraft is filtered... are we to be suspended for trying to get around those, too? I have used filter evading techniques in two of the three examples here and in no way was it profain.

I trust you will do what the filter cannot do and that is use good judgement in addition to the authority given you.

Thanks,

Bud
Ditto!!!

And please make the forum MORE User Friendly!!!

It is just CRAZY sometimes.

And I will try my best to not do the filter thing, but I have noticed that you have words in your filter that WE don't even know is in there until after we write them. So that isn't the writer's fault.

I know we have had a lot of discussion about certain racial slurs by celebrities and ******* topics, and I think that at times some users get preferential treatment on some of these postings and replies.

Okay, done now Smiler

Gus, I saw that post, and wondered which Trailer park's name was dirty-sounding. Couldn't think of which it was. xD

From what the Moderator said here we can get banned for using them. I had NO idea that the term used for men and women who got sunburned below the hair line in the back was anything other than endearments and Jeff Foxworthy's jokes that EVERYONE all over the Nation uses. For crying out Loud, Who do we call to complain???? Certainly not Al or Jesse.

This isn't right, ONLY ONE person on this forum had a problem with it, so now we all have to live with it??????

I just can't believe they got rid of that term, here in good 'ole Florence/Muscle Shoals/Sheffield/Tuscumbia et al.

I do not mind foul words being blanked out, nor do I mind how the Moderators of the site handles most situations.

But when there is an ENTIRE forum saying it is their PET name for loved ones, and has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH RACISM one single bit!!! NOTHING.

Now, it really upsets me. This is wrong.

If ONE person has THAT much power, then we better make darn sure we all know WHO this person is and STAY OFF THEIR POSTS, they are trolling, baiting, and luring.

Nuff said!!!!
Ahh, Necks that are red?

*shakes head* We have soooooo become so Politically Correct that we worry about every little word.

Seriously, people, if it's not considered a racial slur by the masses of the country- And YOU happen to get offended- then /you/ should be the one to grow thick skin, not ban it for everyone else.

There are several really good jokes that most the time lovingly refer to southerners as that- Jeff Foxworthy AND the rest of his Group (think Larry the Cable guy here) Have MADE boocoodles of money off of that kind of joke. It's not been offensive to most of us, so why block it out just because it /might/ offend someone. That's asinine. *sigh*

I think the word "fat" is going to offend me. And while we are at it "short". Let's force folks to say "big boned" and "vertically challenged". Then we need to get rid of "dumb", "stupid", "crazy", and "ugly". Oh wait! I have a better idea! Let's just get rid of the crybabies!!! Sheesh.
*joins Manda and shakes head, too*
Is it me, or does anyone else notice that lodged complaints in this section are never addressed in their entirety by the Moderators?

I thought that was what FEEDBACK was for???

Confused

I think they read everything except what is in this category.

I don't think they have enough moderators, maybe it is time for TD to consider hiring a few people to work at HOME and go through the idiotic posts and replies. It would make a tremendous difference to the forum
It has been my experience that the only sure-fire way to get a response from the moderators is to click the Report This Post button. I think that there is only one moderator at this time and she has other duties at the TD in addition to this forum.

Something that came to mind... perhaps we "regulars" need to police ourselves. If a certain poster is being rowdy - we all ignore them. NO ONE will continue to post back and forth with themselves. I know when I see an offensive or downright assinine post, my first instinct is to reply. If we all make an effort to suppress that instinct and instead choose to IGNORE the riff-raff, perhaps they will all find somewhere else to play. Just my humble thoughts for the moment...

Moderators are not needed. Let the people speak. How else are we going to know how ignorant they are.

PBA stated in a thread a long time ago that the PBA stands for what he/she does for a living -- it is radio I think -- hence, the reference to WLAY's phone call.

I absolutley cannot believe that red and neck put together is now a banned word -- all because one person decided that he/she was offended by it -- especially after folks like me said we were proud of being one.

That "banishment" is a direct hit on my right to free speech. Whatever happened to the concept of my rights end where yours begin. I fyou don't want to read what I post -- ignore me. Otherwise, we all might actually learn tolerance from each other.

I agree that the TD needs to do something about Bill Gray taking our comments from this forum and posting about them and about us on another forum. That is slander isn't it? He is not always so "righteous" in his posts about us on that site.

Maybe PBA works for the TD?
Moderators are not only here to police. As an admin, on a larger website, we fix posts (usually to make them fit the family friendly rating), we get passwords, monitor chat, and all posts/replies.

Here it's a little different, though, but they aren't just here to police, (or I should say AM is here-since I think she's the only active mod right now) but also to moderate conflicts, retrieve passwords, and help in the general running of this forum.

I might be wrong on what they can do, since I've never ran a website like this, but I can tell you by experience, that ONE admin can not run a site/forum alone. Eventually that admin will burn out, from having to do so much.

However, if you look at the members list you will see that the moderators/admins are not here enough to even do that. I'm not faulting AM though, because I know she has other responsibilities to do during her days. TD definitely needs more moderators or admins to help run this site more smoothly. Especially when handling situations of conflict, and mediating that conflict to where there is a solution other than banning. Smiler

It is possible, I do it every single day on a site that has over 60,000 members on it. It can be done here.

ALL sites /need/ moderators though. Whileas you and I, and most people can maintain our cool enough not to become offensive or too aggressive, others may not can. To subject the rest of the members to stuff like that alone can tear down a website or a forum in no time. TD has a good thing going here, I'd hate to see that happen. Smiler

I know a lot of people think that more mods= less fun, but not always. At least if the moderators are trained, or taught well enough to /not/ let power go to their heads. I've seen that happen too.

Forum Members,

Thank you all for your feedback! Apologies for the delay - as many of you noticed with AP gone it's very hectic around here.

We are in the process of getting more moderators to help with the forums, however, I appreciate your patience, as always.

Just to clarify, a censored list will not be posted, mainly because it is wholly unnecessary.

Words that are censored are those that we would not print in the newspaper except in very selective places (for example, a quote where the word is imperative to the story). So, as a general rule if you've never seen it in the paper, don't use it on the forums.

Now, having said that, you will only be in violation of the Member Agreement if your post intentionally evades the filter - meaning you know the word is not allowed on the forums but are going to great lengths to use it.

We understand that some words, due to the way they have been used in the past, will be picked up by the filter even though they are not being used in an inappropriate way. This is a technical limitation to the forums currently and while we hope it improves, the TimesDaily does not intend to remove these words from the censor for those few instances.

We have a great variety of members on the forums and intend to keep the community friendly to all. We appreciate your participation in the forums and enjoy having you - just remember to abide by the Member Agreement.

Thanks,

AM
