Didn't take long for Fox to create a lie in Libya. It is pretty bad when the "victim" of the story calls you a liar.

Fox News Reports: Pro-Gaddafi Used Journalists As Human Shields (Update)
by Alex Alvarez | 5:16 pm, March 21st, 2011
More discouraging news out of Libya: Fox News is reporting that forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi essentially used journalists from CNN and Reuters as “human shields,” successfully thwarting an attack by British forces. Update- CNN’s Nic Robertson calls this report outrageous and absolutely hypocritical.”

Yesterday, following a British submarine attack, the Libyan Ministry of Information invited several reporters and a video crew out to the impacted area under the guise of showing them damage from the recently fired Tomahawk missiles. Some journalists elected not to go, allegedly fearful that their presence would be used to stave off attack.

British forces were then forced to call off any further attacks (Tornado fighter plans were set to drop missiles on Gaddafi’s compound in Tripoli), lest they injure or kill any of the journalists. The Libyan Ministry of Information also brought out a group of civilians to the area for the same purpose.

The incident brings up several interesting questions about the role of journalists covering warfare: Is there such a thing as being too on-the-scene?

Update: CNN’s Nic Robertson is now claiming as false Fox News’ report that he (and others) were used as a “human shield” by Libyan government forces in an effort to thwart a missile attack by British forces “outrageous and absolutely hypocritical.”

EXCLUSIVE: An attack on the compound of Libyan leader Muammar al-Qaddafi on Sunday had to be curtailed because of journalists nearby, Fox News has learned.

British sources confirmed that seven Storm Shadow missiles were ready to be fired from a British aircraft, but the strikes had to be curtailed due to crews from CNN, Reuters and other organizations nearby. Officials from Libya’s Ministry of Information brought those journalists to the area to show them damage from the initial attack and to effectively use them as human shields.

Were reporters taken to the compound by Libyan officials? YES!
Were attacks scheduled for this compound? YES!
Were the attacks called off because the civilian reporters were there? YES!

Seems the Libyans "used" the reporters, since the attack did not happen... Roll Eyes

"The curtailment of this mission led to a great deal of consternation by coalition commanders, sources told Fox News, but they opted to call off the mission to avoid civilian casualties.

During a Pentagon briefing on Monday, coalition commanders said the huge compound was targeted due to its air defense systems on the perimeter and a military command and control center. It was not targeted to kill Qaddafi, commanders said."

There is just one problem, how would good ole Nic (and others) know if he was being used or not? Isn't the main ingredient of "being used", not knowing? You really ought to try to think it out before you type, cut, and paste.

Old timer's saying: you can keep your mouth shut and let people think you are a fool, or open it and remove all doubt.

CNN correspondent slams Fox over ‘human shields’ report
By Michael Calderone– 2 hrs 51 mins ago
CNN senior international correspondent Nic Robertson blasted Fox News on Monday for its report that Libyan authorities used him and other journalists as "human shields" in order to prevent an attack on Muammar Gadhafi's compound in Tripoli the night before. Robertson said Fox News' "allegation is outrageous and it's absolutely hypocritical."

"You know, when you come to somewhere like Libya, you expect lies and deceit from the dictatorship here," Robertson said. "You don't expect it from the other journalists." You can watch Robertson's reply on CNN's "The Situation Room" below:

For weeks, the Gadhafi government has brought foreign journalists invited to Tripoli to government-approved sites (while detaining and even beating foreign journalists who report from non-sanctioned areas in Libya).

"When we go on these government trips, it's for a very simple reason—because we don't want government officials to film it themselves, edit it themselves and then hand it off to us," Robertson said. "We want to go for ourselves. We want to go and see, is it a command and control system?"

Robertson said Fox News was being "hypocritical" because the network sent a non-editorial staffer with a camera on the trip, along with about 40 other journalists.

Fox News correspondent Jennifer Griffin called in to "On the Record" Monday night to defend her report, which was based off information she received from British sources. "They felt that the civilians and journalists had effectively been used as human shields and that was frustrating to them," Griffin said, according to TVNewser. "It was a very close call. In fact one official told me that there was a Reuters crew literally on a spot where they were going to drop a missile."

While Griffin is sticking by her reporting, she acknowledged that Fox News correspondent Steve Harrigan sent a security guard with a camera on the government-organized trip. "I did not know about that earlier today," she said. "I became aware of that this evening. That was my mistake and I apologize for that."

I don't watch fox news or any other news, but I'm all ears for your reply to my simple question.

You cannot possibly be this ignorant...

Oh yes he can.

The UK press has a descriptive account of the the source of the intel. It is funny that the Fox reporter stayed at the Hilton, and sent his security guard, without even a camera, on the trip. Fox: Fair and safe at the hotel.
