And I guess I must have them as well, because I can only remember one with Fonzi barking their virtues, but ole Fred, I see a lot.    .

I find it hilarious when you post...

Vegetables usually don't post.

You're a Carrot? Right?

I like the commercial because I think it's a great deal for Seniors that can use extra cash to spend and enjoy during their twilight years. Better that leaving an inheritance to children that were never spanked, have a room full of trophy for participating, and never made a decent life for themselves. The end results of a inheritance is a family war.

DUUUUUUUUUUDE! That was the 80s.

Nope. I was there.  '70's jargon. Guess you were still on the teet at that time.

Hey, diabetes is no joke.

2/3 of those with diabetes will have heart issues--stents and/or open heart surgery.

And so many will have nephritis with burning/hurting or numb feet and legs that don't work well.

But the worst thing is when diabetes affects your kidneys and you have to go on hemodialysis.  The average lifespan on dialysis is only 4 years.

And so many people don't even know that they have diabetes is the worst part of the disease.

Don't badmouth Fred Dalton Thompson.  He's a native of Florence--of sorts.

He was born in Eliza Coffee Hospital when his parents lived in Florence.

He went to high school in Lawrenceburg prior to going to University in Memphis (1965 grad.)

Then he went to Vanderbilt Law School.

He may be "one of us", but anyone that signs onto the reverse mortgage scam is crazy.  I'd rather eat Alpo than spend my home equity.

Amen to that !

I like the Diabetes commercials with Wilford Brimley. He seems very grumpy and easily irritated.

Then you must not watch TV Land. Sometimes it seems winkler's commercial is the only one they have. I've never seen lee majors pushing them.

As America's population ages, the hard sell is on for reverse mortgages. Promising happier days ahead, the former "Fonz," actor Henry Winkler, is giving the hard sell in relentless television ads. But the housing crash and the fiscal state of today's seniors are causing many of these loans to backfire.

Reverse mortgages were originally designed for seniors who wanted to take out their home equity to spend during retirement. Unlike a regular mortgage, they require no monthly payments, and the borrower can take out a lump sum or receive regular payments.

Jeezus Christ! You Ol' Geriatric Fart!

Try using it...It'll "kill" Fred every time...

First , I don't watch all that much TV , especially in the Summer, and next, there is little on TV that I care to see anyway. I have found that most everything I want to watch , other than current news and weather, is available to stream, and so I don't get any commercials on the ROKU. What little TV I do watch, I somehow have developed the ability to mentally tune out most commercials, but there used to be one, haven't seen it in a while now, that was so irritating that I just was not able to tune it out . It started out  with some woman almost screaming " I HAD TO REUSE CATHETERS FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE" . There are some irritating adds on , but that to me, that was about the worse .

AS to the Fonz adds, I can't remember when I ever watched anything on TV Land.

"Jeezus Christ! You Ol' Geriatric Fart!

Must you, like so many other Catholics I have known, carelessly use the name of the Lord as you have done above?

Shame on you.

I have always thought that we have been somewhat misinformed about all that.

The Bible says "Thou shall not take the NAME of the Lord Thy God in vane"

God , it seems to me is a title

Jesus is the name of God.
So, taking Jesus name in vane really is taking the name of the "Lord thy God" in vane.

Just my opinion tho.

Just saw this thread but totally agree.  I was dismayed to see some of these people associating their names with these programs which, to me, do no more than rob families of their inheritance.  Okay granted sometimes the Reverse Mortgage program may assist some seniors in a tough situation, which we all have, but I totally lost all respect for Thompson who knows better having been a Senator.

I realize some of these people need the money themselves and take the advertising but this is one of those areas that I believe is legally taking advantage of families and which has actually ended up costing some seniors their homes even though the ads tend to say you cannot lose your homes, for you can in certain situations.

I also have, as if I had any in the first place, lost all respect for Robert Wagner who I totally believe got away with murder so didn't have much respect for him in the first place.

No--regrettably there are others who do the same thing.  But i I never said or implied that it was "just Catholics".  My personal experience has been that those of my acquaintance who are Catholics are more likely to do what I described, namely to "carelessly use the name of the Lord."

My observations go all the way back to my youth.  In our neighborhood were several Catholic boys who were students in the local Catholic schools.  In pick-up basketball games or other social interactions, it was shocking to hear some of the obscene language used almost exclusively by those boys, including the invocation of the names "God" and "Jesus Christ" in a careless and disrespectful manner.

Later, in living in a northern urban community where Catholicism was the dominant religion, my wife and I were initially shocked by the same practice on the part of both Catholic children and Catholic adults.

A clarification.  I did NOT equate such careless usage with the commandment, "Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain."  That commandment has to do with confirming oaths by using such names.

The Biblical commandment not to "take the name of the Lord thy God in vain" is a reference to oath-taking, i.e. swearing on the name of God.  It does not include the kind of careless use I have addressed above.
