I just finished watching a documentary about them on the Bio Channel. I enjoyed their music just like most of the rest of the world but according to this old British doofus on the program, Ronald Reagan and George Bush destroyed Queen because they hated gays.

liberals are such a pathetic, hate-filled bunch. Reagan and Bush didn't cause people to stop buying Queen records, the quality of their music did. Instead of Bohemian Rhapsody, Somebody To Love, My Best Friend, Killer Queen etc; we got Radio Ga Ga, etc.

Fewer and fewer people stopped buying their records because they didn't like the new music. The same thing happens to ALL bands eventually and Reagan and Bush has NOTHING to do with it. libs always have to find a scapegoat when something fails other than the fact that no one likes it.

I agree, trader. I do hate sad endings though.

kperk, I'd actually prefer to know nothing about my favorite musicians' personal lives. He was a private man & depending what all they included, I'm not sure he'd appreciate the documentary.

quote:
On 22 November 1991, Mercury called Queen's manager Jim Beach over to his Kensington home, to discuss a public statement. The next day, 23 November, the following announcement was made to the press on behalf of Mercury:

"Following the enormous conjecture in the press over the last two weeks, I wish to confirm that I have been tested HIV positive and have AIDS. I felt it correct to keep this information private to date to protect the privacy of those around me. However, the time has come now for my friends and fans around the world to know the truth and I hope that everyone will join with me, my doctors, and all those worldwide in the fight against this terrible disease. My privacy has always been very special to me and I am famous for my lack of interviews. Please understand this policy will continue."

A little over 24 hours after issuing that statement, Mercury died on 24 November 1991 at the age of 45.
Sorry, forgot to include the reference... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freddie_Mercury

Basically, I despise when the media torments people. Another quote from the article...

quote:
Mercury claimed in an interview to have tested negative for the virus. Despite the denials, the British press pursued the rampant rumors over the next few years, fueled by Mercury's increasingly gaunt appearance, Queen's absence from touring, and reports from former lovers to various tabloid journals. Toward the end of his life, he was routinely stalked by photographers, while the daily tabloid newspaper The Sun featured a series of articles claiming that he was seriously ill.

Nice. You think a man is dying and rather than allow him the privacy he desires, you stalk him. I don't know how they can stand themselves.
Their last album w/ Mercury was in '89 or '90. "I Want It All" was a decent hit in the US, I remember seeing the video back when MTV played music.

That album introduced Queen to my generation, I didn't know about them until that video.

Talent is talent. If a band creates good music, then I'm going to listen to it. I don't really care about the artists' personal lives.
The documentary wasn't a hatchet job unless you are Ronald Reagan or George Bush. It painted Freddie in the most positive light they could. He didn't become flaming until near the end. In fact he had a common law wife and he considered it a marriage. It showed the strain on the band as he went off the deep end.

They were one of my favorite bands but except for watching Brian May play the guitar (one of the best), it got to where I had rather listen than watch.
