Decision To Fire Williford Upheld.

A civil service board has decided the fate of a Shoals police officer facing sexual harassment claims for the second time this year.

A hearing was held today for Florence police officer Pete Williford, who was fired then reinstated then fired again.

The board has decided to up-hold the chief's decision to fire Williford.

After a closed door hearing that lasted for seven hours.

The first claim against Williford was filed by a female employee back in May.

After an investigation, police Chief Rick Singleton chose to fire Williford.

After an appeal, the civil service board overturned the chief's decision and decided to reinstate and demote Williford from Deputy Chief to Lieutenant.

Florence city council chose to appeal the board's decision.

Both male and female employees came forward with eight new charges while Williford was on administrative leave.

Details were not released about the new charges, but we're told they were all related to harassment.

The chairperson of the civil service board said they chose to dismiss Williford based on evidence presented.

If Williford chooses to appeal, he will now have to go through the circuit court.

IN MY OPINION, THIS IS THE RIGHT DECISION BY THE CSB. THEY APPARENTLY HAD MUCH MORE INFORMATION AND COMPLAINTS TO CONSIDER THIS TIME. HE MAY WELL APPEAL TO CIRCUIT COURT. I HOPE IT GOES NOWHERE THERE. WE'LL SEE, Pokey.

P.S. Where was the Times-Daily? WAFF scooped them bad on this. Maybe they were at a Rotary Club meeting.

Roll Eyes I guess we taxpayers have no right to any of the FPD's secrets. I have known Pete's family for years, and would like to know what he said or did that deserved his firing. After all I personally know of an awfull lot of improper conduct from some of our fair city's finest,as well as some of our high elected officials, yet they haven't even been reprimanded, let alone fired. Justice? What justice?
this sort of thing chaps me to the very core of life! I am a taxpayer. I am a law abiding citizen I have a right to know. These "closed" hearings, and such should not be allowed, for ANY REASON. The tax paying public is paying the salaries of each and everyone of those "public servants" and if those involved do not like that, they all should have chosen different careers so they could keep their dirty little secrets and all their nasty little actions "closed" and private!
okay rant over
Consideration for the victims is part of why it is sensitive in airing it all out publicly.

In the first go around P.W. was out of line in publicly disclosing names and in the way he handled it making statements, etc.

The CSB acted responsibly in upholding it now. The case was much better made this time, and there was more. Next is his appeal I suppose.

What a mess. Let's hope it all works out in the end.
I agree with the statement "I am tired of hearing about PW" but not because it is a moot issue. I'm just tired of hearing about a man that can't admit he messed up and take the punishment he was given.

The man in an "emailed statement" proved his mental instability, but now wants to blame it on this whole ordeal. If he had been in his right mind all these years, he would not have harassed the employees that filed the complaints. He again stated "the city used all its power AGAINST me" -- he still has the whole conspiracy idea...I think he should seek a mental health professional quickly...

The City did not try to abolish the Civil Service Board -- Barnhart and Carrier did -- so you can't blame everyone for this conspiracy either.

I'm just glad the Civil Service Board was able to see and hear ALL of the pertinent information this time -- instead of just a sexual harassment -- they tend to give a man the benefit of the doubt still on those type charges even though he did what she said he did and said what she said he said...it was not a he said/she said thing -- it was fact, but the "good 'ol boy" system worked in his favor for a second....

what is that phrase -- your sins will surely find you out...I think that applies well here and before Pokey decides I'm too biased...I think that phrase goes for any and all persons that are alive today regardless of what you do for a living...if you do wrong, you will be caught and you will be punished in some shape, form or fashion.

BTW Pokey, the TD was waiting until Williford was notified in writing before they reported it -- so that he could respond to his official notice -- if they had reported it that next day he would have simply stated "I have not been notified of their decision officially, but we will vigorously defend against this allegations" and we would be dancing aroundt he mulberry bush again....
From FTD article, Aug. 21, 2007:

Civil Service Board Upholds Termination.

(start) The civil service board has upheld the termination of former deputy police chief Pete Williford.

City officials said the board voted 5-0 after an all-day hearing Friday to terminate Williford, tom.smith@timesdaily.com.who has been with the department for nearly 28 years.

City attorney Billy Musgrove said Williford will be notified in writing of the board's decision.

Police Chief Rick Singleton terminated Williford, for the second time, in July as a result of numerous harassment complaints filed against Williford.

The complaints were filed by department personnel, both women and men, Singleton said.

City officials said the complaints were in violation of the city and department's rules and regulations.

Singleton first fired Williford, 49, on May 24 after Singleton investigated a sexual harassment complaint that was filed by a female subordinate.

Members of the civil service board voted to reinstate Williford, but demoted him from deputy chief to lieutenant.

Just days before Williford was to return to work, city council members voted June 19 to appeal the reinstatement to circuit court. As a result, Williford was placed back on administrative leave, pending the circuit court's decision.

Musgrove said that case was dismissed because of the new charges and termination.

"There was no sense going forward with that case. The new dismissal made the other appeal a moot issue," Musgrove said.

Williford has 10 working days to appeal the board's latest decision.

In an e-mailed statement, Williford said he is assessing his "legal options and abilities."

"Both times Chief Singleton recommended I be terminated I could have resigned," Williford said. "I did not because I knew I was innocent of any allegation that merited termination. The civil service board agreed.

Then the city decided to use all its power against me and even tried to abolish the civil service board. This ordeal has taken a severe mental, physical and financial toll on myself and my wife. My challenge now is to try to find employment, despite this ordeal on my record, in order to provide for my family."

Singleton said he expects the process of filling the vacant deputy chief position to begin soon and hopes to have the job filled by early to mid-October. (end)

THE CSB DID THE RIGHT THING. ALL THE TROUBLE HE CAUSED AND ALL HE IS CONCERNED WITH STILL IS HIMSELF AND HIS INTERESTS. HE REALLY OUGHT TO DO WHAT THEY SAY ON THAT SEGMENT OF 'MIKE AND MIKE' SHOW ABOUT RIDICULOUS PEOPLE: JUST SHUT UP.
Also, Dixie, FYI, Barnhart and Carrier did not try to abolish the CSB. That's a lie.

They tried to tighten up the reporting and supervision between the mayor and chiefs, making it more defined and direct.

The CSB would still have been in place and utilized and important. That is not true what you said. Get it right.

Also, Carrier has been a strong voice against Williford for longer than any of them, mayor or other council members. Him and Williford got into at a work session awhile back and Carrier has said for a long time that he thinks that Williford in that position was bad and unnecessary and should be reviewed.

After all this, Scott probably won't say "I told you so" but he sure could. I know that Williford was going around saying that he will make sure Carrier doesn't get re-elected and such stuff. I heard that directly. He has made similar threats against the others too but he really wants to get Carrier he says.

All this is sad, but true. It is good he is gone. Let's hope he stays gone.
Pokey -- I knew it wouldn't take long for you to say some things like that -- esp after you changed your name to Pokey and then denied it was really you.

Yes you are right -- I have secret fantasy about Carrier and he is my dreamboat --- ROFLMAO -- that is funny...of course, I guess people with mental problems do see negative comments as positive attention...look at Williford -- prime example...guess he'll run for office next...

I only quoted what Pete's reference to the City putting all of it's power to get rid of him and abolish the CSB -- I didn't say it -- Williford did -- I merely pointed out that it wasn't the ENTIRE City Council -- it was 2 members that attempted to do that...

of course you phrased that comment about "tightening up the reporting and supervision between the mayor..it would have still been place" -- I remember Scott telling that to one of the news stations ... very ironic that you word it the same....

there was not a lie in what I said -- it was what Pete said -- so go yell at him and get into with him at another work session...I'm not your enemy -- I won't even fight to NOT get you elected...I will cast my vote and that is all I can say...if you don't win it won't be because of me or even because of williford -- it will be because of your attitude as a council member ... go ahead and say "I told you so" then go read the editorial by Goins that talks about what to look for AND NOT look for in a candidate. YOur "go it alone" attitude" of I'm going to do this and I'm going to do that will be what costs you the election....

We didn't bring them in either -- Williford did -- we just corrected his statement because not all of the Council was behind the attempt to curb or dismantle or however you want to word it -- the CSB -- it was those 2 council members alone...now tell me that it was all 6 and that is a lie...
PETE! TOLD YOU HE WAS GUILTY OF THE ALLEGATIONS...
Listen to what he says....Sorry! read what he said in the email...

"I WAS INNOCENT OF ANY ALLEGATION THAT MERITED TERMINATION" Lets break that down...

I was innocent of any allegation...then he says "That merited Termination"

What he just said was....Yes! I did those things.... but in my mind they were not grevious enough to warrant me being fired...The chief is and was over reacting...

He does not disagree on what he was accused of ...but on the degree of punishment...

VERY good points you brought out there TC!!!!
One thing I do not do is flip-flop. That's for sure.

The only good in flip-flopping is when the floppers flip from something wrong and stupid to something right and smart. That's tolerable.

It's when they go in the other direction that it's awful. Some of them spin so much their feet aren't on the ground, they are in the ground.

You know, they are screwing themselves in.
