I agree, I think all of us should write to all our Legislators, and force them into putting this on the ballot. WE THE PEOPLE have that right, and the politicians are elected to SERVE.... or supposed to, lol.

Dry Erase markers? WHAT the HECK??? I thought we payed taxes to buy this stuff? Apparently not enough taxes because my property taxes here are 1/3 of what they were in GA. Is that worth having woefully underfunded schools? We are going to have to do something. Public education is supposed to be paid for by all of the people of a community and "free" to the students. It is surely not that way here. I paid over $300 in school supplies so far for this 2006-2007 school year and I'm sure there will be more to come. A lottery would be great, as long as the money truly went to something beneficial, like education. Given our lawmakers' history of fiscal responsibility, I doubt it though.

Girl, I sure am glad to hear someone speak up about this subject... it cost my daughter a small fortune for all that stuff that our tax dollars SHOULD pay for but dont because they dont want to do anything the Churches might disagree with... sad huh?

I love God with all my heart, but even God can see that people in Alabama are traveling many miles to gamble...does that make it right? Only the person that is doing it knows if it is right for them, or not.
We would have had a lottery in the State of Alabama had it not been for the good pastors of the Baptist Church and the Alabama Baptist Association taking over voting booths instead of staying in the pulpit where they belonged! Let Mississippi, Tennessee and Georgia go to hell, just so long as you have enough money to tithe each week on your Master Card, Visa or American Express you can slip off to Tunica on the side! (I know I already used that one in another post just brought out an "oldie but goodie") Maybe the citizens of this state when tuition gets high enough, high tech jobs get low enough and the taxes are raised even more will start listening to reason other than The Right Reverend Give me all you Got! THE DOG BARKS!
I definitely would like the lottery here. It would save me the money on gas to go across the state line, and also the money to buy the tickets there. All in which, helps Tennessee. I don't play often but every now and then I do, and would love the day that I could just go up to a local store and get them. *sigh*

Hopefully, someday that will happen. I don't see what anyone has against it at all, especially if the proceeds are going towards the schools. *shakes head*

I noticed your mention of property taxes in Ga. vs Al. Just wait! Riley sighed an executive order 3 years ago to allow property taxes to go up every year. Mine have doubled since his term in office. He had the audasity to get on TV this last campaign and say he lowered taxes. Riley is a LIAR ! THe truth is not in him. Lucy promised to reverse that order if she had been elected gov., but apparantelly the good people of this state wanted the higher taxes of Riley.

I guess Tennessee, Georgia AND Florida send the same thanks to Alabama!!! There is NO telling how much these states are making off of people in Alabama just on Lottery Tickets.

Reminds me of the days when there were many clubs at the TN state line, and TN would dump loads of money into the campaigns to keep Alabama dry... they WANTED the money that came out of Alabama to go for THEIR projects... and when Colbert County went wet, the State line clubs almost dried up.

When are OUR lawmakers going to open their eyes and SEE how much revenue we are losing?

RA, although you have a very important message in your comment, the truth of the matter is that MOST people who are going to go to Tunica, or to buy a lottery ticket, are going to do it whether the medical system is broken (AND VERY EXPENSIVE BREAK TOO), or not.

People are just going to be people... they are just going to do what they WANT to do, but our government don't give Adults in our state enough credit. Most people also take their responsibilities serious, they take as good of care of their family as they can, and they buy a DOLLAR lottery ticket a week, whoopdedo...

I think the government should give the MINDS back to the Adults... now I dont mean the criminal adults, I mean just ADULTs to do what they WANT and can AFFORD to do...

But then again... you can do that gambling, and all the perks that go with it if you are a bass fisherman or play golf... something just is NOT right with this picture.
Guys the big bucks from Tn. Ga. Fl. Ms. would flood the T.V. with sob story after story how gambling has ruined so many peoples life. You can bet your bippy on that.
And the thing is a lottery. A casino would not hurt nearly as bad as a simple lottery. The 1 buck tickets add up in a hurry.
Go to the Tn. line and count the cars with Alabama plates. Every time I go up that way, it blows my mind. (small explosion) but hey, ole Larry has cut his hair for years. Cool and it gives him a fun time.
But I am off subject, the only way for us to get a lottery IMO is with some sneaky legislature and I don't know if that is possible.
