This one could be seen far in advance.  I was amazed that Gander Mountain didn't announce the local store was closing when it was announced that the chain was declaring bankruptcy but I fully expected that once Academy Sports opened Gander Mountain's closing would be a foregone conclusion.

It didn't take a rocket scientist to conclude that given D**I**C**K**S expansion into Field & Stream along with Academy Sports opening that the area could not or would not support three major sporting good chains.   I hate to see the jobs disappear and the store is not that old of a store but then from what I hear one reason Gander Mountain declared bankruptcy was they expanded far too fast and aggressively.  Field & Stream may have a large firearms selection but that remains to be seen and Academy Sports, while selling firearms, none seemed to have a vast a selection as Gander Mountain.  Gander Mountain's problem was that their prices was far too high and they didn't compete very well with their competitors.

I was in the Florence Gander Mountain and had a short conversation with one of the associates.  With the change in ownership, most of the stores will be closing and not reopening.  The Florence store, after selling all the remaining merchandise in the store, will close, have a name change, and then reopen.  Not sure yet what the store name will be, but it will be under the umbrella of the Camping World corporation.

Maybe it will be Broken Back Mountain.

Seems to me Lemonis' tweets first about all stores being closed, then here's a list of those that will remain open, and now it ain't over yet are less about business decisions and more about cultivating drama.  Unless they come back in another life being more competitive, it won't make a tinker's dam.

OldSalt, while you were in the Florence GM what were your impressions of the "sale" prices?  Were they down to WalMart retail?

Don't know how the prices compare to Walmart, if there is a comparison.  I've learned over the years and through former employees of Walmart that they have different product specifications (cheaper, lower quality) that don't compare to products labeled the same in other stores.  But anyway, in Gander Mountain, none of the firearms or ammunition is discounted (right now anyway), and other items are only 10% or 20% discounted.

Thanks for the reply.  Actually I was being factious, but a bit truthful, when I asked if GM sales prices had dropped to WalMart retail meaning that when GM ever did have a sale, it was about you could expect to pay retail anytime anywhere else.

BTW, far as labeling goes, I agree with you except a firearms.  For instance, a Marlin labeled a 336w is the same 336w anywhere you buy it.  The only difference is the $$$ you pay wherever you purchase it.  Right now, they're $400 at Academy, $470 at Bass Pro, and $480 at Cabelas and D icks.  So if the local WM has one, its the same one maybe cheaper but not lower quality.

Actually it was about confused sheepherders (Looked it Up!), should have stayed with sheep and converted to Islam:

Plot

In 1963, Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist are hired by Joe Aguirre to herd his sheep through the summer in the Wyoming mountains. After a night of heavy drinking, Jack makes a pass at Ennis, who is initially hesitant but eventually responds to Jack's advances. Despite Ennis informing Jack that it was a one-time incident, they develop a passionate sexual and emotional relationship. Shortly after discovering their summer together is being cut short, they briefly fight and each is bloodied.

Ennyway, picked up a nice looking yugo M24/47 at the goose-big-hill at a decent price. After scrubbing out a ton of cosmoline, it seems to shoot better than I can. My son has talked me into putting a scope on it (long eye relief), so I'll see if he can cluster some better constructed reloads in a nice group.

Cowboys, cattle herders, rodeo riders, that protected a herd of sheep one summer for the money.

By long eye relief, I presume you're mounting the scope on the barrel to avoid drilling / tapping the receiver and bending the bolt.  What brand / model of scope mount are you using?  One that replaces the rear sight?
