Because of conservation and more efficient engines, the US is back to providing 40 percent of its own oil and on track for 50 percent by 2012.
The rest of the oil must be bought on the world market at the speculative prices you've been seeing or less for the heavy, sulfur crude from Venezuela and Iran. US oil companies have to pass the higher costs of procurement or production on or go out of business.
Who wants to see PEMEX or ARAMCO stations all over the US?

Reduce dependency on foreign oil by creating our own energy here at home. It creates jobs and saves us money. We can't do that when the largest taxpayer in America is Exxon oil. And Exxon is only responsible for 2% of the 185 million barrels of oil drilled daily.
We need wind turbines, solar energy, and for pete's sake affordable electric vehicles.
We could reduce America's dependency on oil by 25 - 40 percent over the next 4 years if the government would STOP blocking everything being proposed.
They have meetings with energy experts then ignore everything the experts say.
The change will have to start with us (as it should) because our government has too great an interest in oil to make any changes.
Ride a bike sometimes, walk sometimes, car pool sometimes, seems small but if we ALL did it, we can certainly start to make an impact.
Just my opinion for what it's worth.
