It's on the front page of TD now -- boy they are "johnny on the spot" these days...

While I understand this is an area with a bad rep that is no reason to belittle someone being shot and/or killed...regardless of the time of year -- there is never a reason or excuse to take a life -- especially just for $$$...go get a freaking job...

My thoughts and prayers are with the family during this very traumatic time...
My God! I am actually starting to be afraid of living here in the Shoals. Before I moved here I checked the crime stats and they were so low. Just in the past six months here in the Shoals there have been how many, four home invasions where people were home and how many break-ins when people wren't home? HELLO???? I'm from DC and this stuff doesn't even happen so often there. Mad

I think those guys above were making fun of the situation and not trying to belittle the man who was shot.

For example if a woman was murdered and a week later we found out the husband did it we would say "Imagine that" sarcastically because we know it is usually a family member.

In the same vein a shooting on gate six road (imagine that) and black folks killing each other (imagine that).
No, unc, not happy, but I'd feel safer anyway. If the people who are doing this either won't or can't find reputable ways to make a living, how are things going to go anywhere but downhill in the Shoals? The whole country is in a recession. So many people here are barely hanging on now. The area has an awful lot of unemployed people or people who aren't making ends meet as it is. Then when you add in all the drug users who will soon have no way to buy their drugs, it's scary. I don't want to leave, I had hoped to stay here forever. Let's DO something. One thing that would make a difference is Neighborhood Watch or an auxilliary police force. It's got to be more than a few people, however. It takes a village to protect a village. I'll be the first volunteer.

It's not all druggies and/or unemployed.

I believe a lot of this stuff, especially the burglaries and thefts that have become a regular thing are organized...gang related.
This doesn't sound like gang violence to me. Gangs don't normally target everyday people. Normally the victims would be targeted for a reason and it doesn't sound like any of the victims of the break-ins had gang connections unless the media is hiding something. They are targeting families and old people. People who normally are vulnerable and can't defend themselves. But even if it were gang related, a neighborhood watch or auxilliary police force could do nothing but help.

Neighborhood watch on Gate 6 road??? Now that is funny. I think you would have better luck in Baghdad.
If it's all that bad out there, why would anyone think a resident there would have any money on hand? Anyway, I don't care where or what kind of neighborhood people live in. They all deserve to be safe. Otherwise, why don't we just send all the poor people to Alcatraz and let them kill each other? Good grief. And if the local police have asked fast food places not to deliver out there, then the police are not doing a very good job of policing and protecting that area, are they?

First, I will say I have no idea what the situation was here, but gate 6 road is well known for it's crime and drug dealers. Why would there be money there you ask? Who keeps more cash around than a drug dealer? Again, I am not saying the person who was shot was a drug dealer or otherwise involved in any crime. That person may very well be one of the utmost moral people in Colbert County, but to suggest a neighborhood watch program on Gate 6 road is bordering on laughable. It is sad, and I don't have any answers because I don't think the Sherrif's dept. has the manpower or the money to control crime in this neighborhood. I have heard they already spend way too much time and effort there at the expense of the rest of the county. Not because they want to, but because they have to.

Phoenix, this is 2008 GET OVER YOURSELF AND THOSE RACIST VIEWS. No one deserves to be murdered reguardless of social status, color, religion, etc. I am so tired of getting on TD to hear you and others try to belittle certain races because of your own insecurities...DERN GET A LIFE!!!
Salty, if you live in town or in a neighborhood I think a neighborhood watch over the next few months would be a good idea. Unfortunately, I live in the county and that is not feasible. If you live in the county and are fairly isolated you can just about bet on your house being broke into and getting robbed at some point. Fortunately it is usually when there is not anyone home. This is not a new phenomenon. It has been going on in the county for years. If you are extremely lucky, some of your property will be returned. If not, kiss it good-bye. Have you seen the Law & Order part of the paper lately? There is rarely one from any county around here that does not have a home robbery mentioned. Sad but true.

I suppose no one should mention the suspects are (drum roll, please) THREE BLACK MEN.

That makes absolutely no sense. At what point did I say anyone deserved to die do to social status or race? Is it racists to say white people tend to kill their spruces whereas blacks don't? Not everything that is racial is racists.

Yeah that really worked. Most of the drug dealers live in tuscumbia, sheffield, etc... and transport to gate 6 and jarmon lane. The Sheriff's Department is undermaned to handle jarmon and gate 6. It is true that the rest of the county actually suffers due to this. Gate 6 is actually Muscle Shoals PD jurisdiction, but the county has to handle the residential calls in that area. Its a shame because some very good people do live in these very bad locations.

Get real, Tony hasn't slowed down anything on Jarmon Lane. I don't care how much he warns them, they could care less. He should worry about Tuscumbia, they more than have their hands full.

How do you know where the area drug dealers live? Muscle Shoals keeps this area very hot, but I'll say again there hasn't been any traffic on Gate Six for awhile now. This incident could have happened anywhere.

Great point there Phoenix. Not everything that is racial is necessarily racist.
