Giffords to Move to Rehabilitation

Representative Gabrielle Giffords, who survived a gunshot through her head on Jan. 8, is likely to leave the intensive care unit of a Tucson hospital on Friday and move to the TIRR Memorial Hermann Rehabilitation Hospital in Houston to continue her recovery, a spokesman for Ms. Giffords said on Wednesday.

Her aides said that the timing of the move may change depending on Ms. Giffords’s health.

Ms. Giffords’ doctors have said repeatedly that she was making remarkable progress, considering the severity of her injury, but that it was impossible to predict how she would recover.

Her husband, Capt. Mark Kelly, a Naval officer and astronaut who lives in Houston, said in a statement that he chose the facility there in part because it is closer to Tucson and Ms. Giffords’s congressional district in southeastern Arizona than other centers the family considered.

Giffords Set for Move to Rehab, a "New Normal"
Ariz. Congresswoman's Husband Optimistic Ahead of Next Phase in Her Thus-Far Remarkable Recovery
(CBS/AP) Last Updated 7:40 a.m. ET

Less than two weeks after suffering a bullet wound to the head, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is being moved today to a Houston rehab center where her husband expects the "fighter" to continue on the path to a full recovery.

Yesterday University Medical Center staffers took the wounded congresswoman outside, where she breathed in the fresh air and felt the sun, trauma surgeon Peter Rhee said.

"I saw the biggest smile she could gather," Rhee said. "We are very happy to have her enjoying the sunshine of Arizona."

Giffords has been making progress nearly every day in her recovery from a bullet wound to the brain.

Doctors ticked off other markers of her continuing improvement: She scrolled through an iPad, picked out different colored objects and moved her lips. They are unsure whether she is mouthing words, nor do they know how much she is able to see.

Her husband, Houston-based astronaut Mark Kelly, believes she has tried to speak and can recognize those around her.

"I can just look in her eyes and tell," Kelly said at a final briefing Thursday at the Tucson hospital. "She is very aware of the situation."
