As one who was born and  raised a Protestant and became a Southern Baptist minister before entering the  Roman Catholic Church, I am perplexed by the evangelical Protestant charge that  Catholics misunderstand salvation. The constant teaching of the Catholic Church  throughout the ages has been that salvation is bestowed alone by Gods grace.  This was not the singular discovery of the Reformation.

As Louis Bouyer has  shown definitively in The Spirit and Forms of Protestantism, all three of the  Reformation theses  the authority of Scripture, the necessity of faith,  and our justification in Christ  were alive and well in the Catholic tradition  long before they were singled out and thematized by the Reformers.

I discovered,  as have many other converts from Protestantism, that there is no need to give  up, or even minimize, the Gospel teaching on these matters. Rather, Catholic teaching  reveals the richest and most profound meaning of the very principles evangelicals  strive to defend. In this sense, they are our Christian brethren, and we speak  to them in this spirit.

There probably is a tendency in popular piety to mistake  the sacramental act of penance for some sort of spiritual merit. No doubt it is  due to our fallen human nature that we take credit for the gifts we receive. Those  Protestants who have dealt with tongue-speaking charismatics know how easily pride  can be generated by spiritual gifts.

While Catholics believe it is Christs  death and resurrection that puts the believer in a new relationship with God,  this is not the whole story of Christian salvation. What some evangelicals consider  salvation by works is merely an expression of Catholic belief in spiritual rebirth  and regeneration, the on-going blessing of grace in a persons growth toward God.  What Catholics properly understand as an effect or fruit of salvation some evangelicals  unfortunately interpret as its cause.

These evangelicals also object to the  role, the sacramental role, played by parish and priest in the drama of salvation.  They argue that Jesus Christ needs no other mediator than himself, that the believer  has been provided direct access to his saving love. This, I think, is the more  important, more substantive difference between evangelical and Catholic than the  issue of faith alone. We can agree with evangelicals that faith in Jesus Christ  saves us from our sin but it is much harder to agree on the form, sacramental  or otherwise, of that acceptance.

Catholics are rightly confused by the evangelical  insistence that Jesus Christ is something other than his Church, his priests,  and his sacraments. Isnt this exactly how Christ is concretely present to us?  a Catholic would ask in reply. The Church as Christs Body, the priest as Christs  representative, the sacraments as visible signs of Christs grace are all inextricably  connected in the Catholic mind.

The power of the evangelical Protestant movement  is seen in its emphasis on an encounter with Gods word as preached and encountered  in the Bible. Catholics in America still have much to learn from this tradition  of continually revitalized worship. Some evangelicals claim that their brand of  Christianity to be more genuine, more akin to the early Church of the New Testament.  They claim to practice a more immediate spirituality, a Christian faith shorn  of its unnecessary accoutrements.

Yet evangelical Christians, if they are honest  with themselves, are not without a form of religious faith and practice. They  exude tremendous confidence in the mediation of the Protestant pastor, the sermon,  their worship, and the study of Scripture.

Christ, we can agree, established  these means for our conversion. But it is also true that he gave us more   the sacramental reality and priesthood of the Catholic Church. Thus, Protestants  continue to find a home in the Catholic Church not because Catholics are Christian  and Protestants are not, but because of the fullness of Gods revelation which  they find there.

Vic, my Friend,

Then, is it YOUR contention (based upon your copy/pasted article) that salvation is "by the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ -- ALONE"  as stated in Ephesians 2:8-9?    Is so, I agree with you.

Or, do you believe that once we become Christian believers -- our salvation is based upon our following all the sacraments spelled out in the Roman Catholic doctrines?

When Jesus Christ declared on the cross, "It is finished!"  (John 19:30) -- do YOU agree that He was telling us that He had done ALL that is necessary to give salvation and eternal life to all who will, by grace through faith, believe and receive His free gift of eternal life?

Do you agree with 1 John 5:12-13?

1 John 5:12-13, "He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life.  These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may KNOW that you have eternal life."

Do you agree with Ephesians 1:13?

Ephesians 1:13, "In Him, you also, after listening (hearing) to the message of truth, the Gospel of your salvation -- having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise."

Do you agree that our salvation is not, in any way, dependent upon the seven sacraments of the Roman Catholic church?

If so, you and I are in full agreement.  If not, then why do you agree with this man who claimed to have been a Baptist pastor and then walked away to accept a false religious system?

By the way, including this guy -- that makes two Protestant pastors who have become Roman Catholic.   One a Baptist and the other a Presbyterian.  The Presbyterian church, being more of a liturgical church, is not too far a jump to Roman Catholicism.   But, so far, your grand total is TWO.

Let me remind you once again of the book "Far From Rome, Near To God" -- which is the personal testimonies of 50 Roman Catholic priests who left that church to become Protestants.  In the original pre-publication manuscript, which I have in my personal library, there were 55 priests who left that church.   Not sure why the editors rounded it off to 50.  But, that is still very impressive -- especially when compared to your TWO.

Vic, my Friend, have you decided to make the jump to salvation -- by grace, through faith, ALONE?

If so, praise God, for you and I will be enjoy fellowship in heaven -- eternally.

If not, I am not so sure of your eternal fate -- having to keep all those sacraments, all the time, can make things questionable.

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill

THE BEREANS APOLOGETICS AND RESEARCH MINISTRY DROPS DR. ANTHONY PEZZOTTA LIKE A HOT POTATO!!!

When the book Truth Encounter of Dr. Anthony Pezzotta made its debut in 1996, Filipino Protestant and Evangelical leaders enthusiastically acclaimed and endorsed it.

Dr. Anthony Pezzotta was a Salesian priest turned Baptist pastor. He loves to style himself as “Dr.” Pezzotta although he does not have an earned doctorate degree. What he has is merely an honorary doctorate in divinity from Western Seminary in Portland, Oregon. Since Dr. Pezzotta was a Catholic priest, Protestant and Evangelical leaders assumed he was such a prize catch. They are never more wrong.

LIE ENCOUNTER: CATALOGUE OF REV. FR. PEZZOTTA'S LIES AND DECEPTIONS AGAINST THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH

Commenting on Dr. Pezzotta’s book, Bro. Eddie C. Villanuevaof Jesus is Lord Church stated Truth Encounter is “[t]he much awaited book on Bible-based revelations of truth that will set people free from ignorance and bondage.” The implication is clear. Catholics areignorant and under bondage. This is the same hypocritical Evangelical leader who wooed Catholic votes in his (twice) failed quest for the presidency. The Filipino saw through his pretense and God did not bless his hypocrisy. He lost the presidential elections twice. I thought he was God’s anointed. I saw on TV how the imported Evangelical pastors and evangelists anointed Bro. Eddie during the JIL anniversary at Luneta last year – and they all prophesied about the victory of God’s anointed one. They all turned out false prophets.

Rev. Butch Conde of the Bread of Life MinistriestrumpetedTruth Encounter by saying that ”[e]veryone who wants to be surely founded in the truth, the only truth, the Bible truth cannot afford to be without a copy of this book.” Thus, for Rev. Conde, Truth Encounter is equated the truth, the only truth and the Bible truth. I wonder if other Evangelicals will be comfortable with that assessment. The jury is still out if Rev. Butch Conde is well received in Evangelical circles outside his own church.

Dr. Luis Pantoja, Jr., Senior Pastor of the glitzy Greenhills Christian Fellowship concluded that Pezzotta’s book “offers a brief but well-documented overview of Catholicism for general reference.”I also wonder if Dr. Pantoja bothered to read the manuscript of Truth Encounter before he concluded that it is “well-documented.” How can a book be “well-documented” if it is has no reference materials?Truth Encounter does not even have a bibliography! And yet, Dr. Pantoja called it “well-documented”!

Dr. Isabelo F. Maralit, President of Asian Theological Seminary, highly commended the work of Dr. Pezzotta and acclaimed the apostate priest as “an expert on Catholicism.” What qualifies Dr. Maralit to pronounce Pezzotta as an expert on Catholicism? Credentials, please.

Finally, Dr. Agustin B. Vencer, Jr., International Director of the World Evangelical Fellowship considered the “former” Catholic priest as a Catholic “scholar and a theologian” and as one “who knew Catholicism from within” [Truth Encounter (Makati City: Church Strengthening Ministry, 1996) p. iii]. What is Dr. Vencer’s basis in calling Pezzotta as a Catholic scholar and theologian? He didn’t say – except that Dr. Pezzotta was a Catholic priest.
