..... I havent seen a post about grocery stores yet, so just out of curiousity, where does everyone shop for food. Personally i like Foodland on Darby Dr and Big Star on N. Wood Ave. Hometown on Wood might be a good place for a grocery store. Southern Mkts are way outta my price and I hate shopping at WalMart period, be it groceries, or regular household items. Since i do like my Kraft Mayo, and Jiff peanutbutter, i dont shop Aldeis(spelling). I do however miss Kroger. I was hoping they would relocate back here after WinnDixie and FoodWorld left.

My favorite is Foodland on Darby. I like it because it is easy to get into and it is quiet and not many people there! I also use Southern Home on Florence Blvd. if I can't find what I need at Foodland. Southern Foods has a larger selection of hard to find items.

I wish we could get a Publix here. I love that store!
I live in Killen. I have tried to use Big Star several times but always end up going to Foodland to complete my shopping so I dont bother stopping at Big Star any longer. I buy the bulk of my stuff at Sams and vac seal/freeze it. I love publix and recently had a Kroger in MS that I liked as well.
Foodland has better meats than Southern or Walmarts. They have a butcher on duty to cut the meat for you if you wanting a special cut of meat.
But if you want variety Southern is the place to shop. But due to my job I have gotten to know each manager in all the local grocery stores and know that if they don't carry something all you have to do is ask them to start carrying it and it may take some time but they will work on it.

Now as far as Krogers coming back? our company is getting rumors that Krogers has bought all the southerns in the B'ham area and southern is looking to sell more or maybe close some down. Just rumor, not fact. But maybe we can get Krogers back.

Now if you are looking for the ultimate Grocery store, next time you in huntsville or Decatur than stop in at a Publix and you will be surprise at the variety they have...they make all the stores in this area look like a mom and pop operation.
In Navarre, Fl. the Publix there on 98 is the nicest in that area, in fact so nice ( but expensive) that Gulf Breeze, (just west of Navarre) is building one there. Only mentioned these because we just moved from there. Yes "PUBLIX" IS FIRST CLASS (give em' a 9.5 out of 10 Foodland 7 Kroger,6.5

Everybody likes to take a shot at Wal-Mart, but I bet it's the same people that are out there at Wal-Mart shopping everyday. It's clean and good people working there. And if you don't like the prices at Wal-Mart, they'll match other store prices. And as always, I'm sure I'll see each and every one of you there. Happy Shopping!!!

I do shop Wal-mart, because of the prices and ad-matching, but I don't like the meat because they add water to it. I will not buy meat there if I can help it.

Bama,

Keep us posted on what Publix has to say! (Just don't tell them how much trouble we have keeping anything decent in business around here or they won't come.)
I view grocery stores like I do supply houses, no single one can provide all my needs. I go to all of them and look around from time to time. The closest for me is big star in Lexington, they provide the most bsic items. I find myself a lot in the foodland in killen, all the foodland stores are pretty good. When I am planning to barbeque, I will go to every store I pass to look at and get the meat I think will best serve my need. It used to be that stores would put a sale on certain items and expect patrons to buy other things that was priced high to make up the difference, that didn't work because people would go to another store to get it cheaper, I think this is why jitney jungle and kroger left the area . If you look now most stores will have the same items advertised at about the same price now. I do go to walmart for certain items but I stay away from their great value items because of their agresive tactics to have the lower price. I have been to Publix in Hampton Cove and Madison and they are a resorcefull place. I was hoping that when Winn Dixie left, they would come here, but it did not happen. Winn Dixie was one of my favorite's to, I think they left for the same reason kroger did.

Same here basically. I do shop around for different items, meat mostly when i'm going to grill too. And Kroger, if i remember right, closed here because of a union dispute. I could be wrong though, but thats what my 2 little braincells came up with.
I have had good service at Big Star in Killen. They will cut your steaks to order and are very friendly to do so.
There are always going to be a trade off in prices according to your shopping list. I guess thats why I go to x store for this and Y store for that.
Anyway I must get my steaks off the grill. Big Grin
I go to O'Guire's in MS for my meats, the farmers market on the TV reservation for my vegetables, and then Sams for lots of things. I go to Southern Family markets for most other stuff, and occasionally Wal-Mart. For anyone who gets anxiety attacks, Wal-Mart is one heck of a place. I wish we would get a place like Super Target or Publix. When I lived in Florida, we shopped at Goodings. I haven't seen one anywhere else, but that place is fantastic. It just bothers me how dirty most places around here are.

Seriously Joy, how many times a week do you go to Wal-Mart? I bet it's at least 3 times a week. People love to bash Wal-Mart and yet they're out there everyday.

Sorry about the delay in response...gone a few days & it takes a while to catch up. Smiler

In answer to your post...no way. If I want that much exercise, I'd prefer it to music or in a beautiful setting.

If you work there, I didn't mean to step on your toes. I'm just not much of a shopper period.

I once heard a preacher say that you could look at your checkbook to see where your priorities lie.

I hung my head down ‘cause most of my checks were written to Wal-Mart (pre-debit card days).

I like to go there for the enertainment if nothing else, I was driving through the parking lot one time and right in front of me came a skinny girl chasing a fat girl. The big girl was evading the small girl pretty well, once the big girl turned real quick, causing the skinny girl tolose footing and fall, she landed and skided her knees about two feet, which caused me pain. I circled around and with some help from someone she was apprehinded. Turns out it was a florence cop who had caught a shoplifter, ater I let her use my phone and was walking to the door I noticed her accomplish was already in a cruser. I thought that was enertaining.

Which part of 280 South is it on? I know the road very well. Can you tell me where it is in terms of the area (Oak Mountain, Greystone, Homewood, etc.), the cross streets, or just the stores nearby? Any of that info will give me enough to go on. Thanks.

Won't say that I will NEVER shop at Walmart but I avoid if at all possible...

I can honestly say that I have been in Walmart one time in 2007 so far (3months not bad, huh?)... that was last Saturday night and we were coming back through Russellville and stopped -- that was the first time I've been in a Wal-mart that we got a close parking spot and weren't run over by people...

Wal-mart is also bad to crowd up the aisles while they are restocking with skids and you have to maneuver around them too much or walk way out of your way to get past them ... do the re-stocking at 2am when the least amount of people are there --

Again, like with the ones in Florence and Muscle Shoals -- dozens of registers and only 1 open so the wait to check out was long...

I would rather pay a higher price and go somewhere else or make mini trips for necessary items to the Dollar General or Freds...than to fight the chaos at Wal-mart...

I agree, wish Kroger had never left -- hmmmph unions!..

hey stephanie, not sure how wal-mart is suppose to restock the shelves if they don't bring the merchandise to the floor. Sorry for your inconvenience, but this is the only way to put products on the shelf, readily available for you and other customers. Yes, they could do it at 2:00 a.m. except for the fact that it takes a lot longer than 3 or 4 hours to stock a store.
Thank you Jimbo. It takes all of an 8 hour shift busting your butt to get that size store in shape for the next day. Its alot different from a small store like Big Star, Foodland etc. Those stores get the amount of freight in a week that walmart gets in 1-2 days. Thats grocery, not counting general merchandise. I think if everyone worked in retail for even a short time, they would have a different attitude toward large stores.
