I used to go to the Unlimited and I like it well. Price wasn't bad at all. I am fixing to join at Helen Keller Wellcare Center, all you have to do is get your doctor to refer you. It is the cheapest place in town at only $28/month for a single person. i believe the joining fee is either $60 or $70 bucks. They have hot tubs, sauna, swimming pool, weights and equipment, plus they set you up on a plan. They also have tons of classes to take!

TSC, why did you hate the Courthouse?
It was usually crowed with what I call "Marathon Moms" who gossiped and lingered on the machines. That frustrated me because I had to wait while they finished up their chats when I wanted to work out. If it weren't the Marathon Moms then it was the "Sweaty Stinkies". I have never been to a gym where NO ONE carried a towel to wipe off the machines. Gross. I have a towel for my sweat, not for yours!

I didn't enjoy working out there. My favorite gym membership was LA Fitness in Georgia. But there isn't one here. I liked them because the machines kept records of your workouts, people wiped off the machines after they used them, did not linger, did not hog the machines for hours, and the hours were awesome. The limited hours at the Y would be my only complaint.

Then it hasn't changed in the past 26 years...lol. I was a member then. That was when they first built the pool and it stayed surrounded by beautiful people that didn't want to get wet.... and looked at anyone that actually did swim as though they were nuts.
I used Keller several years ago and loved it. Good equipment, friendly people and great price.
I worked out at the Court House a few years ago. Did not ever feel comfortable there. Too many "beautiful people" running around. Felt like it was a meat market; a place for hook ups. Anytime Fitness has 24 hr access. I have several friends that like it there. My brother likes Gold's Gym. He has never really gotten in to the gym thing and is very shy, but he joined. He really likes it there and feels comfortable.
I'm no gym rat by any stretch but the Courthouse is smelly and the locker rooms are nasty. The sauna and whirlpool are horrible and I felt that I would catch something if I got in them. The people are pretty cool but not my kind of place to work out. The tennis courts are GREAT!

Golds....To many muscle nuts for me! I mean if you don't bench press 250lbs you need not go there. Nice new facility but everyone is out in the open for all to watch.

Y...to many rug rats running around. Man, can they keep the kids in their own area? They are EVERYWHERE!

I like the Unlimited. Nice place and they have private area to work out. VERY NICE! I live in Florence so it is a bit of a trip just to work out!

I think I will do my pushups and situps out on my deck watching the river flow by. My kind of gym!
It depends on why you want a membership:

To check out the bods: Courthouse

For health: Helen Keller

For health/family atmosphere: YMCA

To purely bulk up: Gold's Gym

That's just my take. Personally I belong to the YMCA because I have kids and can afford it. They can set you up with a personal trainer of sorts that can put you in the right direction for starters. They have lots of classes (although I think they offer a lot of those during the day when most folks are at work). They have two pools: one sectioned off with an area for kids and a 4 or 5 ft deep section for aerobics, then a large pool for laps. Plus they have a track, free weight area, and of course, all the bikes, treadmills, etc. (the equipment areas are off limits to kids - which is nice). They also have a "kids zone" with two new Wiis and a couple of other electronic games and a BIG climbing/sliding area. Kids over 3 can be dropped off there (it's an enclosed area) and actually supervised while you go do your thing.I think they'll give you a one-time guest pass if you wanna try it.
I know Gold's Gym is building a 2nd location on Cox Creek Parkway across from Burger King and greatly expanding the existing building. I was a member of the YMCA also and I think for what you get the YMCA is a great place. True there are more kids but no Gyms have a large pool complex that you can use year around as well as a nice hot tub and sauna.
I go to Gold's and I really like it--and I am no hard body. The serious body builders are downstairs using the free weights and other scary-looking torture devices. The street level has the classes--RMP, Body Works, Body Flow (my favorite) and probably others. The street level also has the treadmills and elliptical machines. I see lots of types there--soccer moms, serious body-builders, and I think there must be some sort of senior group that meets for coffee and what not around 8 in the morning on weekdays. The biggest negative is the parking lot is so tight and the spaces seem really close together.
