Growing up there was never any question...if Halloween was on Sunday, we trick-or-treated on Saturday. It was something that was simply "understood" back then. And, yes, it was the church influence.
That was also the days of the "Blue" law that applied to Sundays. That has long ago changed, and Halloween should change with it. If it falls on Sunday, do it on Sunday.

...the school night thing isn't much of an argument since Halloween falls on school nights more often than not and it isn't changed then.
I dont think it should have been moved, but thats just me. Many of the church folks dont participate anyway, or they trunk or treat at the church.

Having it on a school night gets the kids in earlier as well.

But I have a personal issue here, I was looking forward to big parties Saturday night, sleeping in Sunday and taking the baby trick or treating Sunday night.

As the holiday gets closer I'm starting to think that we will be going out both nights. My 8 year old is going to be Jason which is a simple costume plus he'll think it's awesome that we get to go two nights instead of one plus the next time Halloween falls on a Sunday he'll be a teenager and probably won't want to go trick-or-treating anyway!

Sweet!
We're planning on taking our kids to friends houses on Saturday to "trick or treat" and then to our church fall festival on Sunday. My two-year-old is getting three days of Halloween this year (Friday party at daycare, Saturday trick-or-treat, Sunday church fall festival/truck a treat - pick-ups only version of trunk a treat)and loving the thought of it. He's going to be a fire truck so the costume will be an easy on/off or else I don't think we'd do it. It actually helps us get around to everyone that wants to see the kiddos all dressed up.
once upon a time i had a huge problem with moving haloween for the convience of church people.

now i say this - celebrate haloween on the saturday night closest to it, regardless of what day it falls on.

kids don't wanna trick or treat and gorge themselves on goodies and the nhave to go to bed and get up early for school. and haloween just isnt important enough to cancel a day of school for.

so to heck with sunday, do haloween on the closest saturday, so that kids can stay up late, eat themselves sick, and still have a day to recover before shool again.

but... church should not be a factor.

You can buy a bag of candy any day of the year. It isn't the same. It's the fun of walking door to door, seeing all of the other cute and scary costumes, running through the yard, stumbling and trying to find all your candy after it spilled out. I have as much fun watching the kids as they are T-O-Ting.
It seems that almost every year there is talk of celebrating Halloween on a different night than the 31st, seems there are some that think it should always be moved to a Friday or Saturday or moved around some other event. Anyway, I will take my kiddos trick or treating on Sunday night and if anyone is out on Saturday night then maybe I will go then too.
I remember celebrating the Sunday Halloweens of 1976 and 1982 on Saturday the 30th. I don't understand why everyone is making such a big deal of this. As for churches having a fall celebration, i.e. "Trunk or Treat," on Sunday nights, WHO CARES WHEN THEY DO IT?!? It's their choice and I don't think they, the churches, call it Halloween.
