Have ya'll priced costumes at Wal-mart? $15 - $20 each!!! That's all well and good if you only have one to dress but we have THREE. I've been looking online for creative homemade costumes and I've found some cute one's but I'd like to know if any of you have created one that was easy and a hit! Or, if you just know of somewhere I can purchase some that won't cost me nearly $60 for a few hours of fun I'm fine with that as well.

Pickler, I've seen pics of robots - cardboard boxes covered with tin foil or spray painted silver for head & body. Use pipe cleaners or something similar for antennas. Dryer hose to cover the arms and could do the same for legs.

Girls - gypsy - funky clothes and lots of jewelry and a head scarf or do-rag.

vampire- black cape, white makeup & cheap set of plastic fangs, black pants, white shirt, and a red ribbon for a tie. Slick the hair back.
Pirate! Bandana on the head, one gold hoop earring, Baggy white shirt with a wide black belt. Black sweatpants work well if you use black knee socks on the outside (makes them blouse out) with black shoes. That makes it look like you have tall boots on. You can put on a moustache and eyepatch with black eyeliner. And now for the best part - a rubber chicken tied to your shoulder! You can tell people that's your parrot, but he sure has been quiet lately!

The best part is, even if you have to buy the blouse or socks or whatever, all of it can be used in real life when Halloween is over. Well, except maybe the chicken. Big Grin

I have not judged there before. This is only their second year to have a cook off, so I am hoping I will be a regular from now on.

Pickler, I've been in the same boat with you for years as I also have 3 kids. A couple fun things I've done in the past has allowed me to re-use the clothes on into the winter time. One time I bought three different colored sweat suits and painted their faces the same color and they were crayons, another time two of them were dressed as thing 1 and thing 2 and the other one was the cat in the hat.

Sweat suits are great for reusable costumes. One year i sewed a white stripe down the back of a black sweat shirt, pinned a homemdae tail on the black sweat pants, painted on whiskers, and turned my son into a skunk. Another year i cut out white felt letters, basted them on a black sweat suit, and hung an eraser around my daughter's neck....she was a blackboard.
Do kids now even know what a blackboard is?
1)Use a large clear garbage bag, make two cuts for leg holes, and two for arm holes (a good idea to reinforce holes tape or otherwise) fill with small, blown-up, multi-colored balloons, secure at neck area (safely so no choking hazzard) with ribbon to look like a bag of Jelly beans.
2)Follow same bag modifications except, buy cheap yellow feather dusters/feather boas, pull feathers out and glue loose feathers onto bag, make head band with a few sticking up, wear red tights, use newspaper, quilt filler etc to fill out bag---Big Bird.
3)For two kids, get two boxes that can be adapted and worn by kids,(head and arm holes, cut bottom off for walking safety) cover with white paper/poster board, cut black "dots" glue on like dice.
