I went back to H&R Block this year. I was very disappointed with the lack of knowledge from the preparer. I had to tell them how to do my taxes. They have become a joke. I guess since Wal-Mart has rejected them I should have known. I would suggest you use anyone else to prepare your taxes instead of H&R Block.
A railroad is a ravenous destroyer of towns, unless those towns are put at the end of it and a sea beyond, so that you can't go further and find another terminus.

I like using H&R Block's website to file my taxes.

You just enter the information as prompted and they do all the calculating. It is free to file Federal through the basic package and they charge $29.95 to file state.

I once went to an H&R Block office and asked if they could give me an estimate on how much they would charge to do my taxes. They couldn't give me one so I did it myself online instead.

I have a sneaky suspicion that H&R Block is 'in bed with' the IRS and deliberately allows customers to over pay their taxes and receive lower refunds in exchange for a virtual monopoly in the tax prep business.

I don't believe I said cheat... I said creative thinking....stop filling out a structured form and listen to what a person does in their life..then from that decide which, if any other deductions can be taken that would not normally be a deductible..

Example... Did you have any major renovations this year...Oh! you did? What were they...A new Roof...and replaced your wood stove..did you know we can get you an additional 1500.00 tax credit...

No Questions...type...type...type...type...Ok! your refund according to my turbo tax monster here...is...is...is...huuuuuu!....Well! Obama says you owe another 800.00....tough hu! Well! at least you filed early and got it off of your to do list...that will be 35.00

Next...Hey! I said Next...Where are you all going...I am **** good at this...I had 6 weeks of training here on how to punch these keys...

I don't know about TurboTax but H&R Block's website asks all those types of questions about possible tax credits you may qualify for...New House? New Roof? New Windows? Did you buy a new car? Childcare costs? etc.
H & R Block uses their own software -- not Turbotax. TurboTax is a different company altogether. I do my taxes online. I do it in both softwares and see which one gets me more money back for entering the exact same information and I go with them. For the past several years, that has been H&R Blocks software. Not sure what is different, but it is consistently about $50 more on my refund.

A friend of mine works for H&R Block and this year more emphasis was put on greeting the client at the door like they do at Wal-mart and dressing professionally (as opposed to khakis and a nice shirt she has to wear dress slacks and dress shoes) Roll Eyes than it was on the actual tax classes. She missed dinner several times to go to 'Feelin' Great' meetings where they acted like cheerleaders trying to pump them up. Big Grin

Exactly, and thanks to that, I have already received my refund by direct deposit.
I went to H&R Block in 1984 with a VERY standard 1040 w/minimal itemized deductions. I was telling her how to do it UPSIDE DOWN and determined at that point I would never pay them again. I have done my own except the years that our son's college loans and PACT (yes, we actually got to use ours!) were involved, then I paid a local privately owned tax business to do mine last year due to work expenses that I had never done before and wanted to make sure they were done RIGHT (or, at least BELIEVE they were done right!). Once we quit those extra work expenses I'll be doing mine again. Our taxes aren't complicated and after seeing how they are doing them at that office, I feel confident I'll be able to do ours correctly.
I got a call yesterday from H&R Block 'confirming' my 3 o'clock appointment for today. WTH??? I informed them that i did not have an appointment and would not have an appointment as we were using someone else this year.

BTW...it's my understanding that H&R Block and Jackson Hewitt are lobbying to have ALL tax preparers licensed and attend mandatory conferences, etc. Sounds like an attempt to squeeze out the competition.....
