Hell is not exactly a hot topic, since no one really likes to talk about

perpetual torture. Well, no one except pastor Howard Batson who approached

the tough topic of a fiery eternity during his speech at the G5 conference during

the Baptist General Convention of Texas.

As reported by The Baptist Standard, faith leaders at the conference said when it

comes to staying true to the gospel and evangelism, church leaders cannot

neglect the reality of hell.

In an extended discussion, Batson, who pastors First Baptist Church in Amarillo,

spoke out concerning the controversy surrounding the claims in Mars Hill Bible

Church pastor Rob Bell’s popular book Love Wins.

Batson disputed the most controversial contention from Bell’s book, which is that

that a loving God would not sentence his creation to eternal ****ation.

"The problem is, when you teach and preach false doctrine, it doesn't matter how

noble your intentions or how eloquent your words," Batson said. "If our teachings

are not based on the words of the Lord Jesus Christ and the writing and

preaching of the apostles, they're a very dangerous theology."

Although Batson regards Bell as a "master communicator" with a "passion to

reach people with the story of Jesus," he referred to some of the Mars Hill church

founder's philosophies as "hermeneutical gymnastics" used to mislead readers.

"Bell implies that all people will eventually be saved -- even if they reject the

Lord's plan of salvation in this life -- because 'God always gets what God wants

" Batson explained.  "God will not fail in the end, and God doesn't want

anyone to be lost."

His talk was joined by Pastor of First Baptist Church in Kaufman Brent Gentzel

who proposed the idea that a human's desire to "avoid speaking of judgment

and hell is driven more by our desire to be liked and comfortable than it is by

any true love for our neighbor."

Gentzel avowed Batson's statement outlining three points for Texas Baptist

leaders to follow when approaching the topic of eternal suffering. They are as

follows: one should not try to be kinder than Jesus, one should not try to be

more seeker-sensitive than Paul and never preach "cheap grace."

Batson said, "Bell simply rambles trying to make sense of the evangelical

faith in which he was raised and the cultural diversity

where he finds himself living."

The two pastors feel preaching the reality of eternal judgment is crucial so

believers and non-believers can understand what a genuine commitment

to Jesus Christ looks like.

"To leave that part of the story out of the narrative, or to choose to present

a second hope that the Bible does not clearly present does

no favor to the lost," Gentzel said.

Well Count Chocula is right, it is a CANDY COATED PARADISE,

the only thing is, when in Hell you have no sense of taste or smell.

Could be a good thing if they serve liver and onions, or the guy next to you is "mowing the grass".

If anyone hasn't cut their grass by now, it's going to be a long, cold and

cold and long winter.

Hi Vic,

Thank you for posting this article.  I agree 1000% with those pastors!   Rob Bell and his church, which, by the way, will not even post their Statement of Beliefs on their web page -- are doing a great disservice to our Lord Jesus Christ and to all people who hear and believe their teachings.  Rob Bell and his church are leading folks on a fast track toward the slippery slope.

Just as believers will receive accolades in heaven for those they lead toward the Lord -- folks like Rob Bell will have to answer to God for those he is leading away from God with a promise of a non-Biblical, non-existing "second chance."

Am I saying that Rob Bell is not saved?   No, not at all.  But, I am saying that he is confused about what the Bible teaches and he is confusing many other gullible, vulnerable people.

My personal feeling is that Rob Bell is doing what I did for many years, and what many other people do -- trying to make the Bible fit his life, his comfort zone -- instead of making his life fit the Bible.  We cannot adapt the Bible to fit our lives or our society.  We must adapt our lives and our society to fit the Bible.

Just my thoughts.

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill

I was wondering if anyone was going to knock this, just a little.
These people are out there, watch what they say.

Good post Bill.

Hi Jennifer,

Vic had written, "when in Hell you have no sense of taste or smell."

And, you gave your answer above about liver and onions.  When I was a kid growing up in Alabama, I hated liver and onions with a passion.   However, when I became an adult -- I found this to be very tasty.  As an adult, liver and onions has become one of my favorite dishes.  As we mature, so do our understanding and taste buds.   Just maybe, when you mature -- like me, you will also love liver and onions.

And, like liver and onions -- as I matured I found the Word of God to be quite delectable also.

Jennifer, because you are my Friend, I will pray for your taste buds to mature -- both physical and spiritual.

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill

Hi Jennifer,

Yes, my Friend, I do understand.  When I was a teenager with pimples -- I, too, like you -- was the smartest person in the world -- and hated liver and unions.

But, as I began to mature, and with age gained some degree of wisdom and good taste -- I realized that I wasn't as smart as I thought and I began to acquire a taste for liver and unions.   You, too, as you leave your teen years behind may gain the same degree of wisdom and good taste.

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

Bill

You had pimples too? Wow, you were messed up. So you're saying a person has to be all super smart and stuff to like liver? hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm You do realize bill, that you are on a public forum trying your best to call someone dumb or less intelligent than you because you eat bloodclots and they don't. From the things you post I can tell you have no wisdom or "good taste". You should have hung around that "home town" you love to post about. You might have ended up with some manners and common sense.

Waiting on bill to declare it a "spitting contest" because I just refuse to like liver, make a new thread and tell us how pastor so and so touched his taste buds and made him come to love the liver and how he, bill, went out and converted other liver haters by his little story.
