Biden calls for removal of Confederate flag

COLUMBIA, South Carolina (AP) -- Sen. Joseph Biden, a Democratic presidential hopeful joining fellow Sen. Christopher Dodd at Martin Luther King Jr. holiday events, said Monday he thinks the Confederate flag should be kept off South Carolina's Statehouse grounds.

"If I were a state legislator, I'd vote for it to move off the grounds -- out of the state," the Delaware senator said before the civil rights group held a march and rally at the Statehouse here to support its boycott of the state.

In Chicago, Sen. Barack Obama, also prominently mentioned in speculation about the White House sweepstakes in 2008, was a hit at a Rainbow/PUSH Coalition breakfast honoring King, even if he didn't deliver what much of the crowd clearly wanted: a declaration that he will run for president.

Obama received a standing ovation at the annual King scholarship breakfast when the Rev. Jesse Jackson introduced him with an approving reference to the Illinois Democrat's presidential aspirations.

"It's a long, nonstop line between the march in Selma in 1965 and the inauguration in Washington in 2009," said Jackson, the coalition's founder and a one-time presidential candidate himself.

Later, in an address at a King remembrance service at St. Mark's Church in suburban Harvey, Obama said: "I'm not making news today. I'm not here to make news. There will be a time for that."

Gee, think he's looking for some votes?
Well he is not induring himself to a lot of sotherners, who see the stars and bars as only a part of southern history. Not a raciest thing at all. I'm from the south and I thank God I am. The confedederate flag is just that a flag.
It bears to me no race issue. Just a proud people that tried to stand up for States rights.
Better to let this go Sen Biden if wish to remain one of the front runners in your party.
IMO
Don't stir the pot, it may cause a stink.
I never had a problem with the confederate flag until after 9/11 at which point it started to bother me. I'm a southerner and as a descendant of N. Alabama settlers had family members who fought on both sides. I feel we should all fly the same flag and owe the same allegiance to the same country.

The South lost the war and this flag only represented us for a few short years. These years destroyed the south. Hundreds of thousands died and people were still starving to death a decade after the war ended.

Look I dropped the flag thing after all the history lessons, even though I still disagree with the flying of it, just for the simple reason that it offends many people. But I have the right to live where I please, this a very pretty place, the only thing that ruins it are the close minded prejudice people I run across.Thank God that they are few and far between.Mean people suck!

I Agree With you!

I have mixed feelings on the Confederate Flag. It is offensive to African Americans and does represent sedition but it's sort of a complicated issue. I believe that if the South chose to secede from the Union they had every right but the War would have been fought to stop slavery and the South's intentions to extend an empire of slavery into Mexico and Central America. But that's another subject.

Either way, I believe that it is up to progressives to battle racism, ignorance and hatred and the people themselves will decide to remove it. I certainly do not support the right of corporate democrats from another state, that are seeking the presidency, to force it's removal. It's that same kind of decisve "hot button" issue" they use to divide working people. Now the democrats want to use it.

It's like we have to work to open peoples minds and hearts so they change inside and remove it themselves. I am a supporter of the Southern Poverty Law Center and they are against the flag. They oppose the Klan and Nazi violence in court but also have programs to "Teach Tolerance."

I understand that some people see the Flag as a symbol of individuality and all but the flag is a symbol of racism, but forcing the flag to be removed does not stop racism.

Yep, he is looking, but he will not get this one!
