I just seen on the evening news about another home invasion, 2 teenagers armed broke in the door and started yelling give it up, give it up its Christmas Time and we need the money; this happened at 9:45 pm Thursday night, What in the world is going on with all these home invasions and breakins, is it a bunch of people who have moved to our areas from up north with large cities that this is more common, or are we becoming more like the larger cities, this area has always been so safe, didn't lock your door half the time, you could go work in the yard and not worry about locking the doors to make sure no one slipped in, etc. I'm Scared! and I have never been afraid to live where I live. What can we do to help? How can we help the police departments, Please don't think I'm blaming Sheffield or putting Sheffield down, I Live Here, this is my home I'm a Bulldog! I don't desire to live anywhere else and I could, Sheffield is small I think the population is around 8,000, my neighborhood is a nice small neighborhood with a lot of elderly and it worries me, because I'm starting to see a lot people walking the streets and the neighborhood that I don't know or have any idea where they live, all these breakins have been within 6 - 10 blocks of my home what can we do to help. This is not a Sheffild problem only my mom lives in Muscle Shoals and they've had they're fair share of this problem also, I hope these are isolated instances and will go away,I hate having to be weary of others walking down the street or opening a door to a stranger that is in trouble; my husband works a swing shift at his job and I never thought I would see the day when he would put loaded pistols throughout the house for my protection when he is at work but, he has (just in case) he says. what is the world coming to. Does anybody know how many home invasions and home robberies and murders for that matter that we had last year? and if there has been an increase

It has been reported that the three that killed the man last week knew the family. I have read on this forum that the invasion that took place this week was over drugs. Who knows?

I'm with your husband though.....We've always had loaded pistols in our home (btw, no children live here). I heard a strange noise the other night and went straight to my pistol. I have never done that before! I know that I reacted that way because of all the break-ins.
It is very scary.

Like I said, most of the recent break-ins seem to be people that know the person that they are invading. But, with the known drug use in the area, people losing their jobs, and the worthless scumbags that see on the news and read in the paper that most of these criminals are not getting caught, I will agree with your husband and keep my pistols close!

BTW, Has anyone heard the condition of the kids that were shot in the home invasion the other night? I do pray that they make it and can turn their lives around in a good way and maybe help other kids to NOT turn out like they did.
Sorry Moe I didn't mean it that way, guess I 've been watching too many cop shows that take place in big cities which are mainly in the north. What I should of said was, these types of breakins etc. did not use to happen in small towns and communities such as ours it is something you hear about in large metro cities

I heard the Elkins thug was paralyzed, guess he will have to limit his home invasions to homes with a wheel chair ramps, I don't know about the other one or the driver but I hope they are thinking about what their new boyfriend/cell mate will be like......
I hope they catch all the people who are doing this and hopefully it will stop. When I first moved into my home in sheffield I felt very safe in my neighborhood and now I barely sleep at night. I have a 9mth old little boy and I am afraid to let him sleep in his room by his self at night and that is terrible. All I know is we should make sure we keep our doors locked at all times!

"up north" could be Zip City from where I live...but think about it -- how many "big cities" are there below the Shoals? Birmingham and Mobile ... so I guess we could say East and West -- "outsiders moving in" being the main point regardless of where they are from originally... Cool
I don't think it is just Sheffield, there have been numerous home invasions in Colbert county. The economy is bringing it out in people.

I have told my wife shoot first, ask questions later. She knows I will NEVER sneak in on her if I come home late, so if someone is in our house they should not be (period.) We sleep with the door closed to our room, so I told her to put the shotgun to the door and pull the trigger when the handle turns, she can see who was there through the hole in the door.

Criminals be forewarned. Residents are arming themselves and you are not welcome in our homes. You better go back to breaking and entering when no one is home, because many of us have very itchy trigger fingers...

So many people sleep with a gun loaded and next to them. Just remember if your home is broken into while you are not there....it gives them another gun to use later or even wait on you to come home and use it against you. Put a trigger lock on it or lock it up when you are not going to be home and don't leave the key next to it or where it can be found easily.

While I agree with your defense idea,it's not the economy. Most of thes low lifes would break in at anytime if the economy is good or bad.It has everything to do with the collapse of morals in our society and ecspecially among young people.(By the way,I am under 30.)Go to any local high school(even county schools)and look at the boys (if you can call them that)walking around with their pants of their ass trying to look tough. It's the emergence of the thuggish gangster rap its cool to be ghetto gangster image that is causing the emergence of more violent crime.(IMHO)Our culture needs to ship its image of cool away from Eminem and Ludacris and back to Andy Griffith and Bill Cosby.

I've said this before back when alot of robberies at conveinent stores were happening, it aint the economy. There were a few posters to blame the economy. These people are lowlife, thug crackheads. They are not busting down the front dooor of your house or robbing a 7-11 to pay their mortgage or utility bill.

Good point, I agree!
