During our many visits to UAB, Kirkland Clinic and Children’s Hospital, I have often stayed at the Best Western in Gardendale. It’s located at the Field Stone Road exit of I-65. There are many restaurant including Cracker Barrel, Jim & Nick’s, Zaxby’s, McDonald’s, Chic Filet and other located nearby as well as a Wal-Mart. When informed that we were there for a medical visit, they usually give be a price break off of the room rate.

If you need something closer because of in-patient, beware of the locations, which the hospital social services may suggest. Too many horror stories to list from those experiences.

There are a few exceptions and the good ones, will usually provide shuttle service to and from their motel to the hospitals.
I travel extensively and use Hotwire.com to make many reservations. Can't beat the price and three star or higher hotels usually don't disappoint. Stay away from Travelocity.com Top Secret Hotels. I've tried several of their deals in the past few months and have been disappointed in every case. If you find a four star in Secret Hotels it might be worth a try but three star are terrible.

It's separate.

Some of the hotels that people have listed are a some bit away from Kirkland. Not really far but 15-30 min depending on traffic.

Doubletree is very near Kirkland and is decent. Many people that don't live in Bham will say that's it's not in a safe area, though. I lived in the southside of Bham for 20ish years (and still work in downtown Bham) and I don't find the area unsafe. Southside, northside and downtown are just some places you just watch what's going on. It's not bad - just don't be stupid.

The Tutwiller is supposed to be very nice and historic. It's at 2021 Park Place, Birmingham, Alabama 35203 (that's on the northside Bham but not far). It's also fancier than Doubletree. Just a thought.

And Shel... Yes, there is a Ronald McDonald House @ 1700 4th Avenue South, Birmingham, Alabama 35233. I believe it's really new, too.
