IMO, it depends on the child. If I 'had' to give an age I'd feel comfortable for almost any child, I'd say 15. However, I'd still need to be able to contact them at any time, drop them off & pick them up or know the person dropping them off & picking them up to be a responsible adult.

Things sure have changed since I was a kid. I walked to the pool by myself at 12, was dropped off at the skating rink at 10...just can't do that any more.
A suburban elementary school allowed a first grade class to travel into New York--30 students with only two adults. When the trip was over, a father asked his six year-old if there had been any trouble. The child replied in the negative; they all had followed the simple one sentence instruction: Hold onto the rope tied around everyone's waist.

Thank you. I needed reassurance that I was not being unreasonable. Great, I'm simply uncool and I can so live with that. Granted, my child isn't complaining but I know she takes heat from friends. I just think 11 is too young. Even if there is security on duty, it isn't the security guys job to monitor my child.

where did your child want to go?
My daughter is 13, and I do allow her to go to the movies with groups of friends.
But I do not ever see me allowing her to go to the mall and walk over to the movies, like some parents do.
She doesn't go skating, so, the movies is the only place for her to go, and as long as it is a 7:00 p.m. movie, or earlier, and there are at least 3 or more girls going, I see no problem with it.
no bud, 65...

I don't think any "child" should be allowed to go "hang out" without supervision of some sort. The parks, the malls and even the movies have curfews now because parents just turn their kids loose. Basically they said, if you won't be the parent, we will make you be.

My parents let me go to the ball field or the movies with other friends and most of the time there was an adult or older teen with us. They didn't allow me to date until I was 16 -- and I had a 10pm curfew. I had a curfew during the week of 11pm and on the weekends of midnight until I moved out in my 20s.
