FLORENCE — A Lauderdale County school board member who operated a heating and air conditioning company was arrested Thursday morning for operating without a contractor’s license, officials said.

Dan Allen Beavers Sr., 68, 2975 Alabama 64, Killen, is charged with three counts of operating without a contractor’s license, said Jeff Becraft, deputy director of the Alabama Heating and Air Conditioning Licensing Board, in Montgomery.

Beavers, who is completing his second term as a member of the Lauderdale County Board of Education and is a candidate for the District 1 Lauderdale County Commission seat, turned himself in to authorities Thursday morning.

“After the warrant was issued, I called Mr. Beavers, and he came in,” Lauderdale County Sheriff Ronnie Willis said.

Becraft said the heating and air conditioning licensing board filed the reports for the warrants. He said Beavers’ operating license was revoked Oct. 11, 2007, which involved a complaint, but declined to give details.

“His son, who also had a contractor’s license, had his license revoked in 2012,” Becraft said. “We have information that Beavers had continued to operate.”

Beavers said Beavers Heating and Air Conditioning has always been owned by his son, Dan Beavers Jr. He said he had a license since 1975.

“After my license was revoked in 2007, my son got his contractor’s license, and I was working under his license,” Beavers said. “Then his license was revoked in 2012. I was working under the license of another contractor, but not for the last two to three weeks.

“This is nothing more than someone being jealous, making the allegations against me,” Beavers said.

He said two of his workers were trying to finish the work that had been started while he was working under another contractor’s license when the issue came up.

“(The complaint being filed) started (Wednesday) and Ronnie Willis called me (Thursday morning),” Beavers said. “I can’t do anything or get someone else to finish the job until we go to court.”

Beavers said he has retained services of a local attorney. He said he will be in court to answer the charges April 10.

“I have licenses for a general contractor, pipe fitter, plumber, master gas fitter license, electrical license and home builders license,” Beavers said. “I can still work, just not anything on heating and air conditioning.”

The charge is a Class A misdemeanor and is punishable by up to a year in jail and a fine if convicted.

These consumer protection boards are to protect the citizens of Alabama from substandard work as well as the health and safety of us all. Mr. Beavers in no way addresses the issue about the fact of why his license was revoked in 2007. Not did he only loose his license but his unsatisfactory workmanship cause his son's license to be revoked as well. I am sure whoever's license he was using was being threatened buy the state board as well so they pulled the plug in order to protect themselves.

People, be educated as to who you hire for this as well as any other work you have done to your home and hire only licensed contractors.
