This is the MOST ridiculous thing I have ever heard of. How is this any different from a blind child that needs a dog? IT ISN'T!!! He needs this dog just as bad! They say other students would want to bring their dogs to school? Are you kidding me? They are old enough to understand that they can't, he had a reason. It it a federal law that people with disabilities are afforded EVERY opportunity available to them, this is HIS OPPORTUNITY! Come on people USE YOUR HEAD.

This just goes to show you how Autism is not considered that big of a deal to some people. This is why it infuriates me. It is not treated appropriately, people do not consider it a disability, and it does not get enough study even thought the rates are rising every year of children having it. There is some cause and no one seems to care enough to figure it out. I hope this school system wises up and realizes that this is discrimination. And to all of those fearing thier children will be distracted by an dog in class or their children have "dog allergies" it is likely that this child will be paired with an aide and won't even be in a large classroom with everyone else. He needs to be in a quiet environment with all of the one on one attention he can get.
My twin has C.P. In the early 70's we had to push for every ramp, parking space and right for her to be treated equally. What is worse, in the 19 years of perfect attendance of Sunday School, the first 14 were mostly upstairs and she had to be carried up those stairs. (no elevators then) Even marked parking spaces were ignored in the pouring rain, at church mind you.

Point is, it doesn't matter where you are, people just cant get their noses down out of their eyes long enough to see that EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT/UNIQUE/SPECIAL.....and all deserve the opportunities provided by the constitution, even with a little help. These parents are loving this child to be all he can be, and I am proud to see them stand up for their rights.
I have an autistic grandson that goes to school in Russellville. If he needed or I could afford this type of dog, he WOULD have it!!!! and NO ONE would tell me that the dog could not go with this child! Remember George Wallace and the school house door? There are Federal laws and a constitution that says everybody will be treated equally and fair. If I had to go to the point to go to the Federal Judicial System, I am sure a Judge would furnish me a Federal Marshall just like they did in the mid 60's! Would the school board deny Helen Keller a seeing-eye dog????? This could be a National disgrace for Alabama...home of Helen Keller!
