First, I would like this discussion to be civil and respectful if possible. We can all act like adults if we choose to.
______________________________________________

1.What is it that you get out of replying/posting here on the forum?

I like to personally read and learn about other's viewpoints. Smiler I also have a bad habit on using a lot of smilies, so I'm sorry if that get's annoying

2.What is your opinion on how to treat others, and how they should treat you?

I treat everyone, pretty much the same as they treat me. I usually don't let myself get riled up, although I have been known to be a smart donkey sometimes.. LOL!

3. Do you think that there are some people here that take this site much more seriously, than it should be?

-Or-

Why you take this place seriously, what gets you riled up so bad that you actually get angry? (please no names, or insults.. just a simple yes or hypothetical will work)

I definitely think some do. It's like they smell blood when they reply. I am sure we've all been there one time or another and said something mean or out of the way, but there are a few that at times, I just wonder what is going on to make them act the way they do. I personally treat others as they treat me, at least most the time. I definitely try to. Otherwise, I try to ignore those that are preverbial pot-stirrers. Then again, we all mess up from time to time, and could all fit the "pot stirrer" category, at one time or another, I'm sure.

I don't see much joking around with each other, and when there is joking, sometimes it's misunderstood. I'm not saying that some issues are not passionate, because I know of a few subjects that I might get upset at if I was in a deep conversation/discussion, but some here take it to extremes (and not just the every now and then occurance).

I feel that everyone is (and should be) allowed their opinion and it should be respected as long as they are respectful. I also personally, try to always remember there is a person behind the monitor, and try to do my part to not spread discontent.

Although again, I can be a smart donkey, but it's usually when someone is being one to me first. Otherwise, I'm probably one of the nicest people you can know.

I also know others are not like me, but it would be interesting to read why others "Think" or "Do" take this place so seriously. Smiler

(Again, please no names, I'm not posting this in the intent to bash on anyone.)

4. What is the average age around here? I assume, blindly, that most are older than me, but maybe I'm way off the mark.

To add a little bit about myself here, I am 24 years old. I am married to a wonderful man and have a beautiful 2 year old son. Both of which take up most of my time. My spare time is spent online being an admin and just having "me" time. Smiler

5. If you lurk and read this forum, what keeps you from becoming a part of these discussions?

(I ask this to all, even guests-if they want to sign up to answer, that is)

I did this for quite awhile as a guest. I didn't immediately join for the fact that I couldn't add anything useful or fun to the discussions that I read. Eventually though, I found one that I wanted to reply to, and have been here ever since. Some days I reply, other days, not so much. Smiler

6. What do you want to see on here, that could change?

Not to get all hippy'fied here, but I'd really enjoy this place more, if people could (at least the majority of the time) be respectful to one another. I know that, Odds are, that may never happen, but it's a good thought. Smiler

Other than that, I think I would like to see a few more admins watching, so that arguements do not flare to the point of bashing. Smiler

7. Are you all locals?

I am. Smiler
______________________________________________

Okay, those are the ones off the top of my head that I thought to ask.

I thought to ask these for several reasons. One main reason, is so that maybe we all (at least us newer members) can get to know one another better or at least be able to see a little more depth to the people we absently minded put shortcomings on.

The second reason, is maybe this could also help with the Admins of this forum.

If you want to you can leave your opinion on how the admins may can improve upon this site.

We have done this at the family friendly site I help administrate for that has over 60,000 members. We only have 33 admins there, and none of us gets paid for our work. We do it, because we enjoy helping others and part of doing that, is understanding our members by an average post kind of like this.

We have had our problems there, but for the most part, everyone (even those that disagree) get along in a civil manner. Smiler

When I first saw my mom replying to this site, I thought it was most probably something that I wouldn't enjoy much. But after awhile of reading over her shoulder and then lurking, I thought, "What the heck, I'll join and just read
and lurk."...

Well, that turned out to work, eh? lol.. I actually thoroughly enjoy some of the intellectual stimulation that I get here, but (*yea I know there's always a but*) some people are just absolutely ruthless to each other, I think better understanding might help? It might not, but hey, it's worth a shot to me to at least get to know a few of you better. Smiler.

Also, you might see me trying to be mediator or peacekeeper often on here, if you do, it's a force of habit, I cannot help it. After 6 years of being an admin that comes out of me in just about every discussion where I see conflict. As a human though, I do fall short on that sometimes, Usually when it involves my mom, though (But only when she is in the right).

I definitely try to not step on any toes though, as I'm sure the admins here wouldn't like that too much. Smiler

I hope that this thread is a positive one and I look forward to reading all the answers you guys and gals give. Smiler I have to go make lunch for my lil' guy, but I will be back in a bit to read this. Smiler

Td, this wasn't posted to open a can of worms. It was posted in sincerity. I'd really like to get to know people better, and kinda get inside their brains on what they think Big Grin

I, still being very new, also didn't like the insinuations that we were a source of problems either. I have read a few of your comments in the last few minutes. You seem like a very bright, and very well worded person. I am sure when there are insinuations about us newbies, that they are meaning the ones that just come on here to start trouble. That's what I assume anyways.

I get bored of the disagreements as well. I am used to an atmosphere on the site I frequent, where everyone is gives and receives respect. There has been very little bashing done there over the years. So when I see argument after argument here, it makes me wonder why some are so hostile.

Hopefully some of them will comment here (without being judged) and elaborate on why they might post with negativity often. Smiler

Thank you for replying, and hope that you are welcomed here. Smiler

My counselor at rehab says forums are good for me. It keeps my mind busy and I won't want to smoke crack as bad.

I believe in treating others the way I like to be treated. I prefer to be insulted and demeaned so badly that I cry myself to sleep every night, so that's how I try to treat others.

3. Do you think that there are some people here that take this site much more seriously, than it should be?

I take this site very seriously, I would never make a joke of any kind here. If I did, I would probably relapse and smoke crack again.

I could tell you my age, I'd prefer to tell you my age in mental maturity. I am 10 years old.

I'd like to see a thread where I can post dirty pictures.

Thats a lot of questions..... I like to read what others think on different subjects. I dont post alot, but read 2-3 times a day. But one thing i have learned from here or just about any other forum, people love drama. Like people posting, "I'm leaving".... thats all drama... ok im off the subject, sorry.... but as far as people, i'll treat anyone like they treat me. Here or in real life. And, for me..... its probably best to leave all my personal dealing out of any forum. But thats just me. Theres been some good stuff on the forum here and of course theres been some crap too... i'm kind of surprise the Mods have let some of the bickering go on like they have. But its all good,... nice set of questions i guess even though i didnt answer them lol.
Thanks SC, I don't mind so much copy and pasted threads, in a minimal condition at least. It's when everything is copy and pasted that it gets to a point where there is no free-thinking discussion.

So I totally get ya on that. Big Grin

I might come off as an ditz sometimes, but at least I dont copy and paste my opinions.. hehe Big Grin

I might have to check out some of the recipes.. Is there a thread on here just for recipes? I know there is one about restaurants that has a few recipes in it, but other than that? Big Grin

Thank you for your reply. Smiler

~Manda~
Original, I am the same way. I love to read other people's opinions, and most the time I don't have to interject my own, because someone usually has said what I wanted to say anyways. Smiler

That is so very true about Drama and I think that is everywhere. Even at the most mild websites there is a bit of drama, even if it's behind the scenes kind.

Tis ok, about leaving personal dealing out, and not answering all the questions. Big Grin

I'm too kind of suprised that the mods let the bickering go on, but then again I'm not sure how many moderators they have for a single forum category. If there is only 1 per category, I could see how that would be a huge undertaking.

Especially when there are so many threads here and people posting on them. Smiler

Thank you very much for your reply. Big Grin

I am not much for questions or questionaires that do not appear to serve any useful purpose. The demographics of the Shoals area, and Alabama in general, can answer and explain most of the participants found on this forum, myself included.
Keeping the educational demographics in mind will explain some of the truly stupid and ignorant missives here, myself included of course. Evidently birds of a feather flock together is the most obvious explaination for posters here.
I especially admire this boorish trend of copying and pasting all previous posts to the same thread, and lets not forget the numerous overt and not so covert allusions to grave bodily harm offered here, those are the best.
I am an outsider, resident of Arizona, I am recuperating from life threatening illness, and virtually housebound, and economically not where I was when I was healthy and employed. I am strongly opinionated against general mayhem and war. I speak out where I can be heard, it beats talking to myself. I become angry when a dog is kicked, or a child abondoned hungry, or a family is marginalized by forces they cannot control.
I have worked as a volunteer investigating animal abuse, I cannot do the same in Domestic abuses, I cannot tollerate the stress of being in the situations.
I think this forum exists as part of the mission of Times Daily, to inform and discuss the public, I think it is my obligation of citizenship to be informed, and where possible to inform others. (makes me a died in the wool, 100% Genuine blow hard, a lable I am not ashamed of)

I can't tell you what I get out of the forum, other than information and insight, and the occasional chuckle or rage.

I will be 65 next week, I have been disabled for 6 years, and was ill for 3 before I finally had to stop working.

I subscribed to TimesDaily online to be informed about issues in Alabama so I could carry on a reasonably informed conversation with a resident of Alabama. He was politically involved with the same issues I was. When I discovered the comments space, I lurked...from November to January. The people posting became more and more important to me, so I started responding.

This is not the only place I participate, Google EdEKit...you'll see that I am busy.
Manda, this is a GEAT post... if everyone reads all that you wrote, they can see the ADMIN inside you... YOU are certainly a peacekeeper at any cost... I love you for that!!! I am very proud of you and really like how you did this post.

Of course, I know exactly where you are coming from with all these questions, because I belong to that "other" site too, where the insults, cursing, and all the other nerve-wracking things DO NOT go on...

Good for you for trying to uphold the nicer side of society... Doesn't cost a cent to be NICE... maybe someday you can teach me to be that way more often...

Glad you didn't get MY temper!!! LOL

LOL Quarrels... admit it, you love a good debate!!! And so do I, as long as it doesn't get out of hand, that is..

I am also in Alabama, in Colbert County... and I am old, old... lol... OVER half a century old, Big Grin
I am local, in my early 50s and a gay male. I enjoy posting and tend to favor entertainment oriented posts. What is on tv, what's at the movies, books I'm reading, that sort of thing. I also like the discussions about local restaurants, local businesses, etc. I try to keep away from politics and religion.

I DON'T enjoy discussing it, but anytime I see something negative posted about gay people, it hurts and I try to respond in hopes that I can make people see that I am such an average person and not anything vile just because I happen to be gay. If I can change one person's opinion, that would be rewarding. I cringe when I read posts on here that are antiquated and have a "redneck mentality."

As for the your other questions, I prefer short postings as well. I also agree with the person who mentioned people who quote an entire passage instead of just a few sentences. That is also a pet peeve of mine as well.
Quarrles, this questionaire does have a purpose to it though. It's a way for people, with opinions really, aside, to actually get to know each other a little better.

Might not be the norm of posts, because it's not about most the hot topics here, but it is a way to get to know each other better.

I only added the parts about the serious/bashing stuff because I've seen many people complain about that. I figured why not put it all together on one post.

I think that getting to know people as well can be educational. It can also, whether people admit it or not, make others more subseptible to understanding each other's view points Smiler

That is the full reason of my thread. Big Grin

I do understand what you mean though. Smiler I don't think people should be threatening anyone, especially with bodily harm Frowner

~Manda~
Finally, someone that got the gist completely of my thread. Thank you Ed.

I have a few friends on the other site that I've mentioned here, that are from Arizona. One is in I think Tucson and the other is in Pheonix. Smiler From what I hear it's beautiful country out there.

I also get angry about animal abuse or child/domestic abuse. I cannot fathom how anyone can be so cruel to hit/beat another person or living thing. (Well besides if the person's life/family's life, was in jeopardy)

I am saddened to hear you have had to go through a life threatening illness. I hope that you continue to get better, and I am sorry to hear you are housebound. I can imagine how tough that is, in a very small way, because when I was Pregnant with my son, I was on full bed rest from 4 months on, until he was born. It's no fun to have to stay pretty much indoors, and/or have to depend on other people so much to help, even in the smallest way.

I won't ask what your illness is, but I will add you to my thoughts. I'm not sure if you are religious, I cant remember, so I don't want to offend by saying I'll pray for you. Smiler

Happy Early Birthday, though! I hope that you have a very pleasant one. Smiler

That is a very interesting reason to be on TimesDaily, but cool none the less Smiler I bet you and your friend have awesome conversations Big Grin

I might google you sometime, when I get a chance, I am replying as I am cooking dinner, so I don't have time to look things up right now... Big Grin

I go by korngurl amanda most places Big Grin

~Manda~
Mom, you are a hoot. Smiler *blushes*

Thank you for the sweet reply. Big Grin You tell me how I can help ya with that temper, and I'll try. Big Grin

I try to be nice to everyone, and usually that comes naturally, but I get that from you too. On here, you may not be the nicest but as my mother you have always been wonderful. Thank you for that. Big Grin

Now for that temper, well, I get it honestly too.. at least the smart donkey part. I don't let much really get me mad, unless it's a real life offline issue.. lol! I guess that's how I handle it *shrugs* Big Grin

Love you!...... *Not really sure why I am answering you here when I could go in the other room and tell you all this though.. roflmao!*

~Manda~
Nash,

Shame on you,I'm old and you nearly made me wet myself, laughed so hard I had to go find my inhaler. I am a displaced northerner, now local have been here about 16yrs. Married me a 100% Redneck- I love him to death.I really do love everyone and would be the first to stick up for someone. Every once in a while I miss my dose of Elavil and run off at the mouth just to see who will argue with me.I am a housewife, raised a passel of kids-now helping to raise my grandkids. You all are the only adults I get to talk with, been talking to children for the last 28yrs.& hubby only talks motors, cars & guns.
David, I like talking about movies, and tv too. I dont really have time these days to read books much. I chase around a 2 year old too much. lol.. But I do understand what you mean.

One of my friends that I grew up with was and has always been openly gay, and I've seen what he has went through. I think I learned a lot growing up by being able to see that, because it taught me to accept people as they are and not what they are. Smiler

I didn't intend on this being a long post but it turned out that way when I was writing it. I wrote it in word, and took me two or three days to really get up the nerve to post this, because I didn't really know how it would have been perceived. Smiler

One thing that I don't do is quote, I don't know how to, haven't figured that out, and I guess don't really care to know. I can just say the username of who I am talking to and hopefully I wont confuse them Big Grin

As for copy and pasting though, I do agree with a lot of you. In moderation, it's fine but too much and it becomes a tad irritating. Big Grin

(Probably about as irritating as me using smilies are, I'm sure.. That is out of habit though, at my site smilies don't appear as images, so I am kinda used to just typing them without thinking.. lol)

Thank you for your comment.

~Manda~
Yankee, Nash cracked me up too.. There for a second too I thought he was serious, until I read the second answer.. xD

How do you like it here, Yankee? 100% rednecks are fun. I have me one of those. Well, he's actually half redneck/country boy if I'm going to explain him better. hehe..

I don't take medication, but I do run off at the mouth every now and then too, for the same reason Big Grin

You sound like me, I'm a housewife, raising my lil one, and when it comes to adult conversation, it's either with hubby, mom, the site I admin for, or here. Big Grin So I completely understand that!

My hubby likes Sports and cars, and although I can talk sports with him decently, I don't know a thing about cars.. lol.. I know how to change the oil and pump gas, the typical stereotype for a woman when it comes to cars. Yep that's me. Big Grin

Thank you for commenting Big Grin

Ditto, but different circumstances. I'm 51, widowed for 6 years and now it's just me, my spoiled pug and my 25 year old autistic, non-verbal son. He is the love of my life.
I sign on several times a day to read the forums. They are a good source for reading others opinions and viewpoints then trying them on for size.
And, at times, they're good for a laugh....and laughing is one of my favorite activities.
I now live in Muscle Shoals, but was born and raised in Florence. Although, as of last week, i feel like my "raising" has been erased.
Off on a tangent here-----
I drove down Royal ave. and where the pool used to be there was just a large, empty, (sad)dirt lot. First the "strip" went bye-bye, then Brandon school vanished, Coffee was swallowed up and disappeared and now the pool is gone.
The bowling alley is the last remaining landmark of my youth and that makes me feel soooo old.

is manda wanting a ADMIN job on this forum or something?
I live in a box on Minnehaha Road. I steal my internet connection from a church nearby.
It's Minnehaha STREET, Nash, you must have FORGOT. And the Salvation Army is on the corner so you can get out of the box in the rain. Also, I doubt that any of the near-by churches have internet connections or TV shows, now one is Baptist mind you, but the good people of Sweetwater have a hard enough time without worrying about credit card statements and titheing logs for IRS (I am falling into old posts, sorry) As for all of Manda's questions? WHAT? I get oldzheimers, Lord I have a hard time remembering my phone number sometime and can't even remember what you asked! LOL I like stating opinions, criticizing what I don't like, praising what I do and hearing the views of others and if I get too pissed off I just add them to the blessed ignore list and go on about my business (Speaking of which, you may notice I am late getting on here, NEVER skip work, you make up for it the next day!) THE DOG
ROFLMAO.. Pba, of course not. I have enough Admin duties with the site I mentioned. I don't get paid there, but here they would probably have to pay me Wink

I think it'd be hard to be an admin here even with being paid. Mainly because there are would be so many posts/private messages to check, and since most the members here are adults, being policed would take some of the life out of this place. Smiler

Thank you though, Pba for wondering. Other's might have been wondering that too. Smiler

~Manda~
*moves bowl over fast* Big Grin I prefer whiz free cereal... Milk will do just fine.. lol!

No worries, those of which that want to take an enjoyable post and make it negative, it's their perrogative to try. I've come to the decision to try not to respond back at their level, even if it is for good fun. Wink

Thank you though! hehe

~Manda~
LOL Mad, you crack me up Big Grin

Tis okay if you don't answer the questions. I'm just happy to see that this has been a positive thread for the most part. Big Grin

So, did ya get put in the dog house last night?

Work is tricky like that, play hooky and double the work. Too bad that the same doesn't happen for a day of fun, huh? Big Grin

LOL Mad, you crack me up

So, did ya get put in the dog house last night?

Nah, I schmoozed Missy over last night, made sure I had the dishes done and dinner cooked for her so she wasn't too mad and was in stitches when I walked in the door at 8:15 tonight (usually get off at 4:30) so the saying still hasn't came true: EVERY DOG HAS HIS DAY! Mine must have been sometime in 1974 and I missed it LOL THE DOG
I dont prefer a nonsensical atmosphere...such as...Nah, I schmoozed Missy, ect

I like to deal with real life situations. Why can't everyone just be their self and let the chips fall where they may? No need to create false situations to get a leg up...just be honest.

No dig at vanyione in particular, but I think some here are intellectually incapable, and can only post on nonsensical topics. The NEW crowd is leaving them without. thats just my take on it.
Mott, there is a really simple solution to that, you don't have to read it. Smiler

I happen to like some nonsensical atmosphere, I think it is exactly what this place needs a little bit of, even if it's only a spoonful Big Grin

I'm not so sure what you mean about false situations, but whatever works for you may not work for everyone else.

And that is all I really have to say about it. Big Grin

~Manda~
As the one who started the thread on "Do Normal People Post on Forums" I have found this one interesting. To say the least by no means do many of us here sound very "average" (as I was corrected to rephrase my question) as to the married, 2.5 kids, etc. example I gave.
Sounds like Manda is close to fitting the "averages" I gave - that is a compliment Smiler

My answers to Manda's questionnaire are in red:

quote:
Originally posted by *~*Manda*~*:
1.What is it that you get out of replying/posting here on the forum?
Ocassionally some info that doesn't make the news, but more often just expressing a point of view that someone hasn't yet expressed or I believe needs expressed.

2.What is your opinion on how to treat others, and how they should treat you?
People should be able to disagree without taking it personally, but if someone dishes it out they should be ready to have it given back to them. A lot can be justified as "constructive criticism." Wink

3. Do you think that there are some people here that take this site much more seriously, than it should be?
-Or-
Why you take this place seriously, what gets you riled up so bad that you actually get angry?
YES, for sure, several seem to be engrossed in this. I can assure you there are many other worth while things everyone could be doing regardless of their age, physical challenges, etc.
The few times I have been angry is because of deep feelings I have for those that serve our country but are dissed because people disagree with policies or politicians.
Also it is true - discussing religion or politics gets people riled up.

4. What is the average age around here? I assume, blindly, that most are older than me, but maybe I'm way off the mark.
I am about the average age around here, but I won't say what that is.

5. If you lurk and read this forum, what keeps you from becoming a part of these discussions?
not applicable to me, but I would guess some are scared to death to be a "newbie" with the treatment some get, and other "average" people probably think we are all nuts :O

6. What do you want to see on here, that could change?
Absolutely without a doubt more moderators and some limits to posts started and posts made per day or words per post. There might as well not be a moderator here.

7. Are you all locals?
I am local. I don't mind some outsiders visiting but I do find it annoying that those with no ties here and no reason but too much time on their hands to be some of the more frequent posters on the forum. It would be better, imho, if more were local and more threads were on local topics

I do think people should lighten up and add a little humor to their posts, even if it is sometimes saracastic.
The ugliest thing a poster can do is sit and type slanderous things about someone just because they have a different opinion.

By the way, Nash's post deserves an award! Cool

I said i dont prefer it...i didn't say anyone shouldn't post it.

I am refering to the nonsensical ones joining in topics that they have no clue about...it is intellectually dishonest...using the wrong word and not being adult enough to admit their mistake.

If you people want to talk nonsensical, then do it...but stop the chastising of the new members who want to talk of other things.

I find it disappointing the i nam so inarticulate.
