Having spent the first 17 years of my life in the Shoals area -- and the rest in various parts of the world: Korea, Formosa (Taiwan), Virginia, Texas, mostly California -- because of the lack of Southern genteelness found in other areas -- I do miss it. I still believe in opening doors for ladies, allowing a lady to walk on the inside away from the curb, following the rule of etiquette which says, "Ladies first" -- and saying, "Yes, ma'am" and "No, ma'am."
Trust me, as far as etiquette and manners are concerned -- no other part of America can match the South. And, I am proud to be called a Southerner -- and I am proud to be a product of the Shoals area. In no way am I ashamed of the Shoals or the people of the Shoals.
That said, yes, no matter where one travels -- we will find exceptions to the rule. And, the TimesDaily Forum is no exception. In a way, this makes the TD Forum, and the Shoals area, a mirror of our society. You will find many who believe in and follow God -- probably a greater ratio in the Shoals than in other parts of the nation. You will find those, such as Deep, who are atheists and will mock anyone who is a Christian believer. And, you will find those who are just plain rude and obnoxious. I came on the Forums in Jan 2007 when I noticed a discussion titled "What Is A Christian?" I had never bothered with Forums before because most are just "spitting contests."
When I opened that discussion, expecting to see many sharing their faith and Christian beliefs -- I found instead, Deep, Fish, and a couple of other atheists monopolizing the Forum and calling all Christians "stupid" -- "ignorant" -- and a few other choice adjectives. I found this discussion about Christianity totally dominated by atheists. That is when I joined the Forum and began to post rebuttals to their claims of Darwinian Evolution and the glories of denying God.
Bobbi, when Deep states, "The acceptance of poverty, the general rejection of sophistication, the inbreeding of intellect and culture, the preference for a shallow piety over progress. . ." -- you can believe that he is calling the Christians of the Shoals area retarded. I have read enough Deepisms to know when he is slinging "mud in our faces."
This I can honestly say, "I am proud to call the Shoals area; specifically Tuscumbia, Muscle Shoals, and Sheffield -- my home town."
In the mid-1970s, I worked for a computer company in Costa Mesa, California. We had a meeting with a major customer from Northern California who arrived late. He explained that he was tied up making a shipment to his customer. He told me, "I had to ship it to a small airport in some place called Muscle Shoals -- and the Air Freight company could not find it in their system." I laughed and told him, "Vic, that is my home town!"
As it turned out, he was trying to ship a system to TVA.
Yes, Bobbi, regardless of where you live -- there will always be a few bad apples. But, I will always be proud to be a Southerner and a product of the Shoals area.
On the other hand, if Deep is so ashamed of being associated with the TD Forums and the folks of the Shoals area; if Deep is so ashamed to be called a Southerner -- why doesn't he move to a Hollyweird Forum? I am sure that Glendale, Pasadena, or Hollyweird have Forums where he can teach his atheist religion. And, most likely, he would find more folks there of like mind.

Mr. Bill, the word "piety" has more than one meaning. Piety can mean religious obligation. A "shallow piety" would therefore mean a "shallow religious obligation", which I'm sorry, absolutely DOES describe a good many people in this area. Truth to tell, I'm a dismal failure at this forum. I came here to tick everyone off. Challenge their core beliefs, their parochial smugness, their provincialism. Mostly their absurd religious ideas. OK, that one worked, but as for the others, I've learned more than I've offered.
I've made lots of friends here. A few enemies, too, of whom I'm really quite proud. With enemies like them, who needs en.... hm, that didn't come out right. But, I'm very happy with the friends, and I hope to get back that way soon and meet some of you. Just don't go too harshly on me for being such a failure here.

I have been having these dialogues with Deep for over 2 1/2 years; so, I can assure you that he was not joking. Deep hates the fact that there is so much Christian influence in the South. This grinds against his atheist religion and he hates it.
No, my Friend, Deep was not joking. Not when he made the crude remark to me -- nor when he voiced his opinion of Southerners, Alabamians, and folks living in the Shoals. As a matter of fact, that is the most honest I have seen him in a long time.
I am truly sorry if your feel that my refuting his atheist religion is not Christian. Personally, I believe I am right on target. And, it is not venom I am spreading; but, the truth of atheism and the Christian faith.

What I don't understand is why you think this was you mission DF? There must be thousands of forums in California you could post on, why this one? Not to be hateful, just curious. An atheist picks one of the most Christian areas to pick to post on a forum. Of course, if that actually IS the reason, more people to tick off, then I guess you need the adulation you would not get in California.
I tend to stay with like-minded people, I find that ,hey, that makes us more compatible. I would think you would have more enjoyment with a forum of atheists than Christians. But, come to think of it, there are more atheists in the religion section than Christians, so yes, I guess ticking people off is part of the atheist handbook. Also, insulting someone's intelligence for being a person of faith must be rule number one.

I was born in Tuscumbia; but, I grew up and went to school in Sheffield. So, I consider Sheffield my hometown.
Yes, I have been in California for many years; but, still have family in the Shoals area. So, I like to stay in touch with what is happening there. For several years before I began reading or posting on the Forums; I read the online TimesDaily just to stay in touch.
Regardless of how long I have been in California, Alabama will always be home.
