i bought my house not knowing i had hardwood floors. i asked the person i bought the house from and she said it did not have hardwood under the carpet. i just recently found out i have hardwood throughout the house.
does anyone know approximately how much it would cost to have them professionally done?
one room is 18'x 30'
two other rooms at 12'X 12'

has anyone done their own? how hard is it?
i know the bigger room has glue by the front door where someone put some laminate flooring right inside the doorway.

wondering if this works

nola, don't waste money on cleaners. the only thing to make them look new is sanding. you can rent everything to do it with. and i would say you could do all three rooms for under $300 yourself. not too hard. lots of elbow grease! the majority of the work is done with a big stand up sander. you will have to use a palm sander around the edges and in front of the door where the glue is. i have done several in my life and none were too bad. you should be able to sand a room in one day. remember any footprints you get on the bare wood stay!! i usually went to the dollar store and bought sox. a new pair every day!

hi Nola I work in the flooring industry and I would suggest using a professional to sand and refinish your hardwood. It cost between 2.00 to 2.50 per square foot. There are a couple of really great re-finishers in our area. Greg Hart, Ben Hansen and Greg Burnett (floor crafters is in the yellow pages owned by Greg B.)

Good luck!
I would get a professional to come and give you a price. They know about the little things you have to check for like if they have been sanded before. You don't want to sand down and have the nails start to show unless this is how the floor was intended to look. I'm not saying let them do it, but at least have a couple come out and give you a price.
