For the most part, it is very possible that the majority of Alabamians identify themselves as Democrats. Look at the history of Alabama, historically supports Democrats on the state and local levels. But, since we are located in the "buckle" of the "Bible Belt", the Bible thumpers have swayed the national vote towards the Religous Right Republicans.

Now, before every "W" freak out there blows a gasket, let me say that I realize not all Republicans are over zealous religous fanatics that want to control all aspects of everyone's life. However, the zealots choose to align themselves with the Republican Party and carry alot of clout within the Party.

Something everyone seems to forget is that besides two major political parties (Democrat & Republican) there are also two school of political thought... liberal and conservative. Does anyone remember any liberal Republicans, say for instance Nelson Rockefeller.

Having said that, I belive most Alabamians fit into a group best described as conservative Democrats. Meaning that they believe in things like government assistance for individuals, but the individual recieving it should have to be active in trying to correct his situation (one example).

Does this not fit most of the Alabamians you know?
The term I grew up with was "Southern Democrat" and the South was solid Democrat and used the term from Gen, John Mosby "the solid South".
After Johnson pushed the Civil Rights Act, He was told by a senator from Ga , can't remember his name, that the civil rights act would cost the Democratic party the south for a generation.
The South is Republican because of civil rights! Not a PC statement, but the truth.
So, according to excelman, the Civil Rights Movement cost the Democrats the South. So, that would tend to imply that the Republicans were against Civil Rights and were therefore bigots, so to speak. That is a pretty sad statement. Who would have ever guessed that giving all men equal rights would be wrong.

To EdEKIT... note the mild sarcasm.
LBJ and Dick L Wright Ga. were good friends, but were on the opposite side of the Civil Rights Act. LBJ approached him , and told him he was going to go against him on the bill. Wright told LBJ that if he passed Civil Rights, it would cost the Democrats the South for a generation. Turned out it was a true prediction.
Yes, at the time, the Civil Rights Bill was opposed by Republicans, and favored by Democrats virtually along party lines.
I still to this day hear racest overtones from some of my Republican friends in the reasons they give for being against virtually every thing Democrat. Check out some of the post on these forums in the last couple of weeks with that in mind and see if you don't see it also.

Having noted your mild sarcasm, I will attempt to remain calm.
I would Like to point out, as carefully as possible, that the Republican Party draws its major support, and crafts its platfrom for, the wealthiest of Americans. Money and wealth are not racist. Neither is Poverty. Racism is STUPID, BECAUSE IT DIVIDES THE POOR, AND THEREBY STRENGTHENS THE RICH. Try to imagine Hillary Clinton, or Laura Bush scrubbing dungarees on a rock in a river. Try to picture George Bush mopping the floor in a Public Washroom.
Try to picture the Washroom a week after the last time it was mopped.
Think of what your life would be like if NO ONE collected the garbage and hauled it off to a distant dump.

Republicans seem to think that all you need to keep the washroom clean is a hungry person, a mop and a sandwich. GIVE THE HUNGRY PERSON THE MOP, AND PROMISE THE SANDWICH WHEN THE WASHROOM IS CLEAN. Eat at least half the sandwich while the floor is being mopped by the hungryperson, and then divide the remaining half between the owner of the mop and the hungry person. Repeat this process each time the washroom needs cleaning. YOU ARE ASSURED AN UNENDING SUPPLY OF HUNGRY PEOPLE, AND AS LONG AS THE MOP HOLDS OUT THE FLOOR WILL BE CLEANED BY SOMEONE ELSE.

The Republican gets three quarters of the sandwich, and a clean washroom for thinking this plan up. The Hungry person gets to eat a quarter of the sandwich each time the washroom gets dirty. The Republican CLAIMS the hungry person is cheating by using the washroom and getting it dirty.
By the way, the sandwich was made by a person in Sri Lanka, where there are no public washrooms, and is seperated from the sandwich by a promise that as soon as enough sandwiches are provided the Sri Lankan will get a public washroom. However, the quantity of sandwiches required is large enough so that the promished washroom will have to wait at least two generations for construction.
